installing problems with Zone Alarm
« on: October 13, 2007, 06:44:38 PM »
Hello.

I've just downloaded Avast anti virus, the free home version. After downloading I got a message about some conflicts with Zone Alarm, which I use as my firewall. I got a message about turning off "the transparent proxy mode of the Web Shield" and began to try and follow the pages and options that appeared. I'm afraid I got lost. I'm sorry I just didn't understand what I was being asked - things like browsing for a new IPS, or something like that. I had to go out for a hour and hoped to keep working at this when I got home, but when I did these pages of instruction were off my screen and the program seems to just have installed. Now I can't get access to my E-mail program Outlook Express and lots of other weird things are happening.I can't even find out how to get back to those instructions which I can't understand

Can anyone help me out? I'd like to use Avast. A tech at work put me on to it and right away I caught the Trojan my old anti-virus had been missing.

I have been having somewhat similar problems getting finance.yahoo.com to show my portfolios in their MarketTracker. I can see real-time quotes in the ordinary pages at finance.yahoo, but no portfolios appear in MarketTracker. I was in the process of complaining to Yahoo (since its a paid service) when I thought to disable the Web Shield  provider in Avast Home Edition.

Eureka! problem dissappears immediately.  When I re-enable Avast Web Shield it again blocks the real-time quote updates to my portfolio from yahoo.finance.

Any way to enable the real time quotes and keep AVAST Web Shield running?

Please stick with your own topic at, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30947.0 as this one is unrelated to your problem.

1. I assume that you have Zone Alarm Pro as it is only that programs Privacy function that conflicts with the web shield proxy.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video, see links below.

Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).

If you answered incorrectly, Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line (avast will ask again, answer YES) or change the value to =1.  Save the edited avast4.ini file.

For IE - broadband users: - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE
For IE - dialup users - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE (Dial-up)

2. Does ZA Program Control allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and check your email, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have Zone Alarm Pro just the free edition so can't imagine what the problem is. All I know is I can no longer use my e-mail.

As for my two entries. I wrote my question once then realized I had put it in the wrong category. Realizing my mistake I then put it into the proper one. I have no interest in causing any propblems, rather I thought I was doing what I should do to prevent that.

Thanks.

You shouldn't have been asked the compatibly question if you have ZA free as the installation should be able to recognise the free version.

What version of avast are you using as this check was refined on earlier avast program updates (the latest is 4.7.1043) ?

However, that isn't too important you nee to ensure that the avast4.ini file, ZoneAlarmCompatibility= value is set to 0 (zero) as you shouldn't need to disable the transparent proxy, nor should you need to manually set your browser/s to use the proxy.

Did you check the ZA Program Control as I suggested (and take any required action) in my note 2. ?

Not a problem on the duplicate post, my post was to avoid anyone responding to what was a redundant topic. For the future, you will notice a Modify button on all your posts, this allows for editing content in a post (only moderators can delete posts/topics) in the duplication case "edit: content removed wrong forum" or "Edit: content removed, duplicate post, etc."

All I know is I can no longer use my e-mail.
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

If the entries are already there, just delete them and try to work (email, browse...) waiting for ZA to ask permissions again.

Don't need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

I got rid of Norton Ant-Virus this week and installed Avast Home. Excellent program! I was asked, however, the compatibilty question during installation even though I have Zone Alarm Free.

You shouldn't have been asked the compatibly question if you have ZA free as the installation should be able to recognise the free version.

Is there any version of ZA antivirus in your system?
I suggest you get rid of remains of Norton and try to install avast again.

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista 2008.0.0.21.
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.

Since 4.7.892 version of September 25, 2006, avast gets improved detection of ZoneAlarm Pro (to prevent unnecessary WebShield incompatibility warnings). So, if you're using ZA free, you shouldn't see the avast! Web Shield compatibility dialog while installing/updating avast.

Anyway, if the question appears and you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
Or you can use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case). Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line or, if you want to keep this line, set it to 0. Save the edited avast4.ini file. Thanks, Tech.

In the 'Installed Providers' panel in the 'On-Access Scanner' I see that all programs are running apart from 'Outlook/Exchange' which I don't have. Is all now well? :)

Most probably.
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Then, please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
