I have avast pro, lately everytime it updates it asking me to restart my pc. Why is this happening so many times a week.

What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 4.7.1074 and 071202-0 (see about avast!) ?

Operating system restart needed by avast message - First check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file, which should show you why it thinks the reboot is needed.

This may be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt

Well there have been a number of beta updates in the last week, however .1096 didn't ask me for a reboot.

The strange thing is the fact that it indicates reboot = true mine showed false, so I'm not sure where avast looks to determine if it need a reboot when compiling this log.

Did you check for the presence of reboot.txt and delete as I suggested ?

Is this what you checked ?

You can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains "PendingFileRenameOpertaions".

Check its contents and if there's only "reboot.txt" from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don't delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

This is something old that really shouldn't be the problem, but it won't hurt to check it out.

If that still isn't the problem it could be a tweaking exercise that has an impact on avast.
- Also see 8,3 Tweak issue - Check out this thread and see if some of the possible solutions can help you too.

I don't really know what else to suggest as the suggestions have usually been enough to resolve the problem in the past.

You aren't using any VM software as I think there might have been something about updated issues with VM software ?

I take it you have an admin privilege and UAC doesn't get in the way ?

Other than that all I can suggest is try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot. Because you are using the beta version you will probably need to run the uninstall utility to ensure nothing remains in the registry.

Download the latest regular release version of avast 4.7.1074, http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. If you wish to continue with the beta trial you would also have to run the aswbeta.exe installation file again.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.

Thanks, I think I'll do a repair, I love this antivirus and its not so much of a bother but if it gets to be to troublesome you have told me how to reinstall, thanks again

Is your system time/date correct? (although it seems so)
Are you using the beta version?

Indeed we have three forced updates, i.e., in three times just updating VPS (virus database) you need to boot the computer because a forced program update with it.
