virus updates fail error
« on: January 09, 2008, 07:47:26 PM »

Hi ....  I've been using Avast home now for quite some time and am veryyy happy with it as  others are. Yesterday,  for reasons that I don't know, when it went to auto-update , rather then the usally blue box telling me it had been updated, I got a red box saying there was an error and to 'click here for more details' ...but when I click there nothing happens..... so I don't know where to go to see what the issue is.   ???  All and any direction would be appreciated...thx, Kat

Can you manually update?
Does this occur each time you boot now or just that one?
Do you use a firewall, which one?
Are you using XP or Vista?

Sorry for these additions, I never had an issue so I never had to reallly look closely at things.  I found the avenue for updates and changed it to manual ... but when i click the 'update now' that does nothing.  Hoping I finally supplied you with all  the info u asked for ....  again, my apologies  K

To update manually, you have to right-click the avast! blue ball icon in your system tray, and choose Updating - > either iAVS Update for updating virus definitions only, or Program Update to update avast! program if new version is available on the server.

EDIT: And do not change those options to MANUAL inside the avast! program settings. They need to stay on Automatic like before. In case you keep them on MANUAL and you forget sometimes to update, you'll be without the latest virus definition or even program version... avast! can't protect your computer if its virus definitions are not up to date.

Nothing is being transfered (0 bytes) or done... strange... system is not being updated.
Which firewall do you use?

running XP ,  so that firewall but yesterday is the 1st time i got the 'red box' error , before that, it was  always the 'blue box' telling me it had been done, which after getting that box again today , I was trying to find out what the error was. Think best to uninstall & re-install?

Think best to uninstall & re-install?
Try to repair your installation first...
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

That's what I thought... your installation is corrupted.
Better install from the scratch:
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Thank you so much or your help Tech. I completely uninstalled/reinstalled.  I checked that both program and updates  were current which it says they are.  Looking forward to seeing  that 'blue box' soon ! I didn't go to check the 'log'  seeing as  updates were current... did you want to see that again ? If theres anything else that you'd like to know about what I am seeing her now, plz just ask. Be well...K
