I'm going to give the update a try again, this time with Avast disabled.  Will it be sufficient to simply click "Stop On-Access Protection" on the right-click system tray menu?  Is that the disable option?

Anyone discover the need to disable Avast in order to install XP SP3?

I did not disable/pause any modules, but I got some kind of error when installing SP3 from windows update. I did have Opera running during the update (although I quit my browsing), it might have been that. Haven't noticed anything strange behaviour after the update.

Any install will run smother and faster if any scanning software is first disabled or closed.
Provided that the download occurred from a reliable source, and what is being downloaded
is known to be safe, I see nothing wrong with this. IMHO
Caution however needs to used in determining what is considered safe and what isn't.  :)
Downloading and subsequently installing SP3 directly from the MS update service was one of the items I considered Safe.

With Avast disabled, installation a success!  I'm surprised others haven't logged in on this matter, but anyway, if using the Windows Update method of downloading and installing SP3, shutting down the scanning processes does appear to be necessary.

Microsoft could have made life easier by telling me this before beginning the download process, and I find that annoying, really, but still, the process otherwise went smoothly.

I didn't have problems at all installing SP3 on three machines (two at home and one remotely in Europe) with avast! fully enabled. Not a single issue, SP3 installed flawlessly.

All I can say is, after two unsuccessful attempts -- using Windows Update -- with Avast enabled, the third attempt, with Avast disabled, succeeded.  And, Microsoft Support does mention that disabling anti-virus software can make the difference.

Go figure ???

Sasha,
I didn't say it can't be done. I simply said that it would be faster and smoother if
you disable all scanning software.  :)

I also know of some computers that failed if you didn't disable the scanning software.
I also had one computer that required re-installing windows after attempting to install SP3 on which I
didn't disable all of the scanning softwares.  >:( :'(  I was smarter the second time around and had no problems with the installation of SP3.

I installed SP3 on my mother's Compaq Presario laptop w/Avast fully enabled during install and there was no problem at all. It was slow, but that was it.

Now, I can't use SP3 on my laptop as it seems to have problems with Toshiba's proprietary power management software. It won't respond when it comes out of standby, and I have to hard reboot the machine to get it to respond. I don't think leaving Avast on during install had anything to do with that. I removed SP3 and everything went back to 100% normal.

Bob,

Yes, I understand it was just my respond to robgrave's post:

...if using the Windows Update method of downloading and installing SP3, shutting down the scanning processes does appear to be necessary.
...
...

I just wanted to point out that it wasn't necessary on either one of my PC machines.

I am pretty sure Toshiba will have to update their software and they will do that for sure. So you should watch their website every few days and see if they release something that's flagged as "...SP3 compatible..." or such.

Cheers!

Just for the heck of it I disabled my protection before downloading SP3 from the Windows Update site. No problems were observed. My XP machine is running fine with SP3 installed.  :)

I didn't realised when I update to SP3 and my computer is run smooth and quick as a baby bum ;D, I wish Microsoft could tell why was SP2 along all the other update patch started to slow down most of the time.

Had MS had to many bug problem since all the SP2 update before SP3 came out? :o it seem very strange to me when I update to SP3.
