Do I really need to change proxy settings
« on: May 06, 2008, 08:33:32 AM »
I have just installed Firefox 2.0.0.14. Previously I was using Internet Explorer 7. OS is XP-Home, SP2, all updates current. Web shield seems to be working correctly when using Firefox, the icon spins and Webshield scanned count seems to be incrementing correctly. I have not changed any Avast! settings since installing Firefox and the Webshield settings were and still are the default ones.

Is there some reason that I would need to follow the setup for proxies given in the Avast! tutorial about Firefox proxy settings.

if you see the spinning icon and especially see that the files are checked by webshield you don't have to change anything... :)

only if it doesn't work/scan the webpages visited...

It does not depend on your browser ... whatever the version.  It depends on your operating system.

If you are using Windows 98, 98SE or Me then proxy setup is needed (but only one time ... it does not need to be changed when the browser has an incremental update) ... for Windows 2000, XP or Vista then avast automatically uses a "transparent intercept" for http accesses on all the well known browsers and you do not need to worry about it.

Just see that the last webpage checked is showing some information when you take a look at the Webshield provider information.

You have to manually configure browser to access Internet using avast! WebShield if you have Windows 98\Me. For 2k\XP\Vista it's automatic and transparent.

To manually configure your browser see the following tutorials:

For IE and permanent connection users:

For IE and dial-up users:

For Firefox users:

Thank you all very much for your replies. They cleared up my question for me. I am new to Avast! and just wanted to make sure I had it set up correctly.
