Hi there,

Today my wireless connection stopped working, I get an error

ACE.exe - Application Error, with an application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000022). Click on OK to terminate the application.

After doing an install/uninstall, Avast kept spotting a Trojan in the install files.

On a hunch I disabled Avast, which allowed the wireless to start working again correctly.

Can anyone suggest a more long term solution where I can allow Atheros and Avast to work together, as they have been doing fine for the past 2 years or so!

regards,

Greg

Please pack the (mis)detected files into a password protected ZIP or RAR and send it to virus@avast.com, with something like False alarm in the subject (and don't forget to mention the password in the e-mail body).
I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

This link is a tutorial on how to help correct a virus detection that you believe to be false:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=25009.msg204838#msg204838
or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=7779.msg62586#msg62586

They usually correct false positives very soon.

Avast falsely detects a trojan in athcfg11res.dll this stops my laptop booting.  It also detects a trojan If I reinstall the drivers.  The way to get around this is to boot in safe mode and run the TP Link setup and uninstall the program/drivers.  Windows XP then boots ok but of course there is no wireless. My setup.exe file is version 11.50.0.42618. this is for TL-WN510G_550G_551G

athcfg11res.dll
To know if a file is a false positive, please submit it to VirusTotal and let us know the result. If it is indeed a false positive, send it in a password protected zip to virus@avast.com. VirusTotal has a file size limit of 10Mb. Please, mention in the body of the message why you think it is a false positive and the password used. Thanks.

Maybe you need to disable Hide protected operating system files and enable View hidden files and folders to manage the file(s).

As a workaround, you can add these files to the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning) exclusion list.
Left click the 'a' blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize. Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button...
You can use wildcards like * and ?. But be careful, you should 'exclude' that many files that let your system in danger.

To:Avast support

You can download the latest tplink driver from this site.

http://www.tp-link.com/support/download.asp?a=1&m=TL-WN510G

I downloaded it and get a warning on running setup.exe,  The trojan is detected in the temp folder that the installer creates.  I only have modem dialup and the download is 14MB so it's not practical to email it to you.  You can download it from the TPLink website.

If you are using the TP Link TL-WN510G PC card you can use the Microsoft utility to control the card instead of the TP Link one.
If you are having the locked laptop problem because of the false trojan detection then do this.
This is for XP
Boot in to safe mode without your TPLink card plugged in.
Run the THLink setup.exe and uninstall it.
The uninstaller says it can not uninstall the card driver.
Let your laptop reboot with the TPLink card plugged in.
Double click the MS taskbar wireless lan icon (the one that looks like a PC with radio waves).
Configure it so the Windows controls the card and click OK.
Double click the MS taskbar wireless lan icon again and configure your wireless network.

This is typed from memory so might not be 100% accurate.
This works because the false trojan is detected in the configuration util and not the driver.  The driver is ok.

I'm getting the same problem.

I've just updated to avast VPN 080929-1 and I'm still getting the problems described above. Namely that the atheros wireless client utility won't work and there is a long delay after the windows login screen before the desktop appears. I've also gone down the uninstall/reinstall pathway where athcfg11res.dll is detected as a trojan.

Do the Exclusion lists work?

Do the Exclusion lists work?
Yes.
After setting an exclusion for c:\windows\system32\athcfg11*.dll and rebooting windows, avast and the atheros utility are playing nicely with each other again. (Allowing windows to manage my wireless connections also got wireless working)

Thank you for all the great advice in this thread. It has been very helpful. :)

I suggest you add (not move) the file to avast virus Chest.
From there, right clicking, scan the file withing a day or two.
If the false positive is corrected, for security, remove the exclusion entry ;)
