Apparent conflict between IE7 and McAfee Site Advisor
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:13:32 PM »
Apparently IE7 and McAfee Site Advisor seen to have a conflict.
For some time now I"ve had a severe slowdown when loading IE7.

This morning I spent some time tracking down the culprit and, it turned out to be
McAfee's Site advisor. Onece it was completely removed from my system, IE 7 again come to life.

Since I'm alrady protected by WOT and also have Scando installed and RGGuard is checking links in the backgound,
McAfee's Siteadvisor was probably overkill anyway.
I know on my system, it was actually killing IE and stopping it from loading properly.

I don't have a problem with SiteAdvisor on IE7.

Sometimes its servers are a bit slow but that's due to occasional load.

WoT ratings are arbitrary and subject to rater's whims.

WoT ratings are arbitrary
Really... I'll start to doubt about its security then ???

WoT ratings are arbitrary and subject to rater's whims.

Well with a large user base there are many, many people rating sites so it becomes less arbitrary and subject to a rater's whim.

I have both wot and mcafee site advisor as a cross reference.I think wot is good because it has a 4 circle system. If you click on the circle or widget or whatever its 4 circles pop up giving different ratings on different things. If you are a member you also have a option to ask the community for a opinion.Like everything else we humans do.It isnt perfect. :).

Well, you might remember that a few weeks ago, SiteAdvisor has been found to cause the "Kerio-like problems" with avast! (Simple/Enhanced UI not appearing when started, leftover menu items stuck on screen...) - which is basically related to (probably not fully correct?) system-wide window hooks.

So, without knowing any details about the SiteAdvisor internals, I can imagine it might cause also other problems...
