Another interesting tool that works as an early responder alongside Avast! and seems to have done well against this threat.  http://www.prevx.com/blog.asp .  I have started using it alongside Online Armor and Avast!-haven't found anything yet, but think that is a good security result.  :)

Hi and thanks,

Where is the link to the tool for download that you mention, I wonder if it works for 98?

The download is at http://www.prevx.com/prevxedge.asp but I think it only works with the NT based versions of Windows, not the 9x.

Thanks again.

When I download it a message appears saying that it expects a newer version of windows, but when I click on ok I get the option to launch the application, would this be safe to do that.

I use Firefox, and this happens when I hit on open within the firefox window, however if I close the download firefox window, and attempt to open the exe file from the temp folder from where I saved it to I then don't get the option to launch the application.

So I wonder if by doing it through the Firefox download window and hitting on open I should then be able to launch it and install it to windows 98.

It's just that I have seen programs previously that have excluded windows 98 and yet they still work ok, and I thought perhaps this may well be similar.

Any ideas as I don't want to cause anything major to happen to the system.

Hi Nightshade...

It's getting more rare these days to see folks using Windows 98. ;)

If an application is not coded for a particular platform (OS,) then I would think there would be at least a small risk. At minimum, the installer won't execute or give you a message identical or similar to what you received, informing you that the program will not install on the OS in question.

May God Bless you!

Don't know, probably they just never considered 98 or ME.  It's not a big complex installation, Two processes and a couple of scanner drivers, but don't know whether the drivers will run under W98.  They also maintain a support presence on Wilders at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=225190 and you could probably get a quick response there.  I have only used it with Vista.
