Google Chrome
« on: May 31, 2009, 12:53:46 PM »
I am trialing Google Chrome mainly because I am sure people will be wanting it and asking for it. Compared to what I remember of Firefox, Google Chrome seemed to take an exceptionally long time to load.

I am running it using XP Pro and on top of IE8, which I havent made my mind up about yet, though I'm sure that there always be a few oddball things happening now and then as part of IE involvement. I previously used IE8 with No Add-ons and Google search as home page.

Chrome seems okay but I've barely used it so far. Should be back at it during the week. I dont expect any complications with Avast Home running. Anything to know at this early stage?

Simple enough to use, almost a bit of a luxury, but did take a long time to load, and updates are already popping up.

Edit - Okay I've found an existing thread - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=40439.0

Also, I'm only using it on one computer.

Google Chrome is not slow for me.
But it has a very poor configurability. I use it when I can't use my Firefox on my laptop.

Chrome is fast but it has less than zero functionality. I'll be sticking with Firefox for some more time i guess...

I haven't tried Google Chrome, but I use Iron for an alternate browser.  Iron is very fast, but it's not ready for prime time, definitely not default material.

Without question, Opera is the way to go! :)

Thanks Tech. Thanks RejZoR. I will keep note of your replies.

Im not on that computer at the moment but will make time later today. I have found more links in the forum so I have some work to do.

I have been having some issues with IE8 (I think) on this computer - page view kind of stuff and mainly or only when I am using desktop as well as internet (comes and goes). I have adjusted my settings and okay now but I think sooner I back to Firefox probably better.

Thanks rdmaloyjr. Looks interesting. I've saved the link and will try the browser. I have heard good things about Iron and about Opera.

You're welcome. :)

Iron really is no more than Google Chrome stripped of the privacy issues.

Hi mkis -

I also use Opera as my default browser and have for the last 4 or 5 years. I made that decision after testing virtually every browser available at the time. As has been noted in the above posts, there have been changes since then but I am so satisfied with Opera that I do not even want to try any other browser. But, I may relent someday and try out Iron should it become a little more mainstream. I do not think Chrome will ever be on any of my computers since it has privacy issues ... but then, could you expect anything different?

If you had been using IE8 with Web of Trust you would have known helpmedownload.com is a scammer:

Hi CharleyO.

I guess it was a bit silly loading Chrome to a front line computer just to trial it. I have less important computers I can use. Why I wanted to get to know it is because people stipulate what they want, so best to know a bit about it - the neighbours kids have got it, so their kids have to have it. Good to know the pros and cons, so can pass on the best practice when its added to someone's wishlist. I get this quite often. Same reason why most get Adobe Reader, Flash player, Shockwave - for the kids games mainly, but also PDF and video for students / adults. Not that big on Adobe myself, but the Adobe set is a good compromise. These are things they stipulate, that they have got to know amongst themselves. I have a feeling Chrome may fall into this category. But I already know its not for me. I can see the title of this thread is going to quickly become a misnomer.

Opera is something that I have heard nothing but good about for a couple of years now. I nearly ran the browser once, but became too pressed for time (as always).

For a few months I have been getting by with IE7 then IE8 and running Google search as my home page, which has worked out okay. I use Favorites in my Start Menu heavily and hit IE icon when I want Google search box. Mainly I use IE with No Add-Ons so just basic IE engine runing under the browser. Problem is over the last few months, I have been successively becoming more adventurous with my browsing - real learning curve, as I was more a hardware / network specialist (just hand me a screwdriver) - and now I think I need as much to cover myself software-wise, as think of my clients needs. Avast forum has been something of a godsend in this learning curve. For the time being I am going to run with Firefox, which is a browser I know a bit about. I have just loaded it to this computer, which is an exact duplicate of the profile below but with 256 Rambus. We'll see how this goes. Its only the start point of a next phase.

Hi YoKenny.

Yes WOT is added on to my Firefox browser and I'm already sold on it. Next I will be looking at NoScript, which I know nothing about but I'm sure there is lots of good info in the forum to get me started. Also, I first came across those scammers about a year ago when they must have bought high-visibility advertising with Google and were trading through name Avast.com I think (using the capital A). I was mortified once I realised I had been taken in as I didn't pick it at first, even though I had been using avast for a couple of years. I had needed to download for a client - and then shock, horror, and then I noticed the capital A. So I just went down the page until I found the product I know. They must have slipped out of sight for a while, perhaps. I wondered if that was them today. And thanks for the tip because I would never have noticed that they were gone again. I did do quick skim through their grovel though, and I will know them straight off next time. And I have got WOT now, so like you say, I will know better who are the scammers.

Edit - when I first saw the scammers about a year ago, I though Alwil had done a make-over. So glad they didn't, and I can still look through their site and actually see real people who initiated, develop, and market the brand. I'll be writing avast all lower case from now on so I dont forget.

Im loving being back on Firefox.  :)

I had a few issues with IE again today. I'm almost certain that these issues are happening because I'm not running their accelerators, and other default Add-Ons. Its like features that I dont need to use that are almost forcing their way onto my browser.

So now two computers are on Firefox browser and a third to follow soon as I have a final squiz on Chrome and write up a brief how-to. That will be 3 front-line computers on Firefox browser.

I actually like the basic Windows engine and probably the basic IE engine as well, but why would you bother battling against what seems like a stacked deck, when you can go look over Opera and Iron and plan for some far more amenable experiences for the future. I could have spent the time looking up NoScript, and then I still have to finish off Chrome. Tonight, I hope.

All the advice has been very much appreciated.

For me too.

Google Chrome features are perhaps a bit too leaden. Plus I had the feeling Chrome was bit chunky rather than lightweight - seemed to take a long time to load for a browser. And it was quite heavily installed through the Registry.

Some others might contribute more. I have uninstalled Chrome from that computer. I didn't spend much time on Chrome, but I have come across it when tuning up other computers and the people seem quite happy with it. Where I have come across it on a computer, no real issues have turned up with it. I think it is going to become quite popular.

But someone else might be more familiar with Chrome.
