Does anyone know how I can go about Virus scanning or kicking off a boot time scan with a script?  Or how I can find out the options for these tasks.  Thanks.

You can't schedule in Home version. Only in Professional.

Howto do with Home version: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=3796.msg27225#msg27225
Drawbacks on Home version: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=29962.msg246925#msg246925

Home version does not have a command line to do so.

You can, however, schedule a boot time scanning:
Just run: C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:"*" /archives
To unschedule, just run: C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /D
