My windows firewall shows virus out of date. I obtained new registration number but it didn't take, still showing the old one. I reinstalled the program with a new registration number but the old one still shows and the firewall still shows virus out of date. I've been using Avast for over five years but never encountered this problem.

I guess you mean Security Center.
Here is a post by Tarq57
First thing to check, your system date and time.
Second, does Avast update normally? If not, can you manually update?
Third, try a repair of Avast via control panel>add/remove programs. Select Avast> change or remove, then repair.
Fourth, you may need to reset the Windows security centre. It gets confused sometimes.
Quote
1. Go to control panel and open Administrative tools.
2. Click on services.
3. Go down to Windows Management Instrumentation.
4. Stop this service. Stop Security Center service too.
Set them to Automatically start. (Default)
5. Exit out of this area, to your desktop.
6. Right click Start, and choose Explore.
7. Go to c:\windows\system32\wbem\repository.
Delete this subdirectory ONLY.
Leave the others there.
8. Exit back to your desktop and reboot your computer (you might need to boot twice).

This will rebuild the deleted folder, and the database.
Once restarted, Windows Security Center should show the correct info.
Antivirus, and firewall, should now be recognized.

I followed the instructions (thanks Tarq57) and removed the repository file and indeed the database was reinstalled after two reboots but the red "X" in my system tray (security centre) still persists. Also on boot-up the red VPS notice appears briefly requesting I update the database. I do this and it states that the database is already up to date (091107-0). My concern is whether I'm protected. Any suggestions
Thanks for your interest and help. Huh
