Removing Infected System Volume Information files in XP pro
« on: February 22, 2010, 04:59:47 AM »
Hi,

My brother-in-law's PC got infected recently n the culprits have been traced to his XP Pro's System Volume Informatio folder by Avira Free Anti-virus.  It can't remove these viruses n trojans so I want to install Avast for him instead.  I can't connect to the internet as something is blocking the network card's drivers from running.  I have tried reinstalling the drivers many times including uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling direct from the mobo's CDs.

1) How can I remove the trojans/viruses using Avast 5 from my own home PC?
2) Can I install Avast into a USB drive n run from there?

thanks & regards,
kevinlw

If they are in system Information then they are probably in system restore and thats what avast 5 would show unless there is also some other malware on the computer.

You must have Folder Options open and unchecked hide protected operating system files.

System Volume Information folder holds all of your instances of System Restore even if you have it turned off. Its okay its good but if you have trojans in there you gotta get rid of them.

If System Restore is on, do a Cleanup with Windows, choose the More Options tab and remove all but the most recent restore point and click through.

Avast7 Free, MBAM (on demand), MVPS Hosts

Intel DG41TY, Windows 7 Ultimate, IE9, Google Chrome, 4 GB ram, Secunia PSI, ccleaner, Foxit Reader, Faststone Image viewer, MWSnap.

thanks for the advice, will try it out if the guy who sold him the machine is not successful.  I suspect that guy will probably do a complete reinstall of XP...
