Unable to boot PC after Avast upgrade
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:16:52 PM »
(support ticket NOM-438116)
I have a laptop setup to dual-boot Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows 7 (Ubuntu is default).

I just started up the Windows 7 O/S, which I rarely use, and Avast wanted to upgrade the software and other files. I selected yes to upgrade the software, then at the reboot I get the following error message: "no module name found Aborted. Press any key to exit."

I can't get beyond this, and my dual-boot capability is completely blown away so that I can't boot into either O/S now. My computer is down and unusable and I had to type this message obviously on a different computer.

Is it standard practice for Avast to destroy the dual-boot capability? How do I fix this?

No safe mode available.  I can't boot into anything at all.

Standard Practice?  No, I doubt that. ;)
Always avoided dual-booting for reasons like this.

I suspect that Gargamel360 is on the right track.  I won't know for certain until I can get a live boot image available to try it out.  Unfortunately I am on the road now without access to my CD (which is at home).

I am attempting to create a bootable image (Ubuntu)) for a USB stick now, but this will take some more time to create the image from a network download that is a little slower than I would prefer.

Thanks for the links!

Problem resolved, using instructions in link sent by Gargamel360

In my case I had to mount /dev/sda6 to get it working.
