The machine will not boot .....
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:02:14 PM »
Hi. First of all, sorry only googleval translated. I saw today that there is a problem that can be updated Avast 6.0.  I went to upgrade it and then asked to reboot the machine. When I restarted did not want to boot it again and again started to boot, started up in Safe Mode and then wiped Avast 6.0 has already been started and then ran a aswclear5-five, and then put into an older version 5.0 that I have something to protect. To try to put up the 6.0?  And Hungary are nylevű? Because I've downloaded English: S Thanks in advance.

I again. I wiped the 5.0-to  6.0-put over the windows and going crazy, nothing he did not want to start writing out some initialization, the deleted in Safe Mode and then back to 6.0 I put the latest 5.1 version. Is not possible to go because there is no Win XP SP2? Just because he is from the 5.1-SP2 and it was written to go without any problem as before.

I thought not I open a new topic is unnecessary.
This will be installed on another computer which already has SP2
Which is the best method of Avastot from 6.0 to 5.1 upgrade?
Update within the menu?
Uninstalling and then install the new one?
Or download the 6.0 installation will start there and choose the upgrade?
Please answer someone thank you.

Even though the in-place upgrade is supposed to work perfectly, in real world there's nothing perfect. I'd suggest removing the old version, reboot and install the new one. It might prevent several issues people keep reporting here over and over again.  ;)

When going back and forth with installs of different versions of Avast, a 'Clean Install' is recommended.
There is already a Topic, I think, also addresses the issue:
Check it out. :)

Okay, but did with SP2 without any problems going to go? Because they do not need SP3 Avast 6.0 has
It is written:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher

Avast might not need SP3, but the users system won't receive any more windows security updates. That ceased in July last year for those on XP SP2 unless they update to SP3. Not only that, SP3 brought improvements in security and closed some vulnerabilities. So it is possible that a vulnerability in the OS not being up to date could be exploited circumventing the AV protection.

So it isn't just avast that we are talking about here but the users security.

Up ::)

It will run, but having Avast is only part of the security equation.  Having a a fully patched OS (WINXP SP2 is not fully patched and will never be, as Microsoft no longer supports it) and patched programs is another part of the equation.  The two together make for a much more secure system.  No antivirus can make up for a vulnerable system, because to some extent it is always reactionary (behind the curve) when responded to threats.
