Web Shield and the Default Browser?
« on: December 14, 2011, 11:43:31 AM »
I have 2 browsers, Google (Android) and Firefox.
The Web Shield protects the default browser, which browser of the 2 are protected when browsing the web?

ALSO,,,,,

New Acer Icona with Honeycomb 3.2,,,,,
z4Root crashes every time I try to root, avast has found the install and the .apk I downloaded (DL'd from XDA) and flagged it as a Trojan.
How do I do a root if avast (possibly) is blocking it?

Have a look at this post on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290318 and try flashing the already rooted stock kernel. It's a well known fact that z4Root has a lot of problems trying to root. Z.  ;)

You don't want your browsing to be protected by the Web Shield? :)

Yes I want my browsing protected by the Web Shield, although, I want to use
Firefox not Google.
I hate adverts, and FF's Adblock Plus is the only thing that makes browsing bearable.

Soooo, I have to figure out how to change the default browser from Google to Firefox, if possible?!

Oh Ya,,,,and I still need root for the firewall..............................

It is possible, but the Web Shield protects only the Google browser. If you switch your default browser to Firefox, you will still be unprotected.

Hmmm... If in the PC version Web Shield filters any browser, this seems to be a natural movement in the Android, doesn't it?

Not really. We don't protect other browsers not because we chose so, but because it can't be done on non-rooted devices due to the architecture of other browsers and limitations of the Android OS.

What you might do is still use FF but not its Adblock.
Instead, download AdFree from the market. It blocks ads all over, not just in the browser.
And so far works fine with Avast for me.
1. Toshiba Satellite A75, Windows XP-Pro-SP3, Avast! free 2014.9.0.2016, Sunbelt Firewall 4.7.4.0, SSM, Opera 12.16, SeaMonkey+NoScript, mvps hosts, (MalwareBytes updated and run on demand only, rarely used)
2. Toshiba Thrive tablet (rooted), AdAway (hosts), Opera, Avast Mobile Security 2.0.4304
