Win32 PUP
« on: February 03, 2012, 01:28:49 AM »
I cannot get rid of a win32 pup-gen virus that is in c:\programdata\dell\dellstage\updates\update_1.5.420.0.  I have downloaded the suggested scans and they all come back clean but if i do a boot scan with avast it comes up every time and it will not repair, delete or move to chest.  Can I just delete the update file?

PUP = Not a virus - PUP (potentially unwanted program)
http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/definition/PUP

it is a warning that you have a program that can be used for good or bad if abused......like a commercial keylogger for example

that is also why PUP scan is turned off by default on the default quick/full scan

as you see the program belongs to DELL

So it sounds like you are telling me it's not a problem and I should quit freaking out.   :-[  Thanks for the info.
