avast 7 cloud scanning
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:16:21 AM »
I have two questions. How do you tell if you have received cloud updates or am I not understaning how this works. Avast just checks the cloud when needed. I just want  to make sure I know how to tell it is working. The regular updates are easy, you see the version on the main screen and get a pop up, how do I know the cloud updates are working? My second question is, once a month I do all my scanning. When I scan with malwarebyes I turn off avast but do not worry since I disconnect from the internet while doing this. So when I scan with avast I am disconnected from the internet. So the question is because of now having the cloud is doing a full scan with avast not working properly if disconnect from the internet? I am using avast pro. Thanks slybo

1st qn: under cloud services, it should say connection established, reputation/streaming enabled

2nd qn: the cloud does not do a scan on ur system. it exists solely to rapidly push updates to u i.e. when Avast! detects that ur local database is not in sync with their sever side, they will immediately push an update to u through the streaming updates. scanning is purely local (not even the filerep is used to prevent malicious authors from finding loopholes in filerep)

You will see "Connection Established" in the cloud service tab in Avast interface when you are getting streamed updates. You don't require active internet connection to perform a full scan. The data for the file rep is stored locally.

Avast! GUI >> Maintenance > Updates >  There you will see the Current Version (Defs) and below is the information about the streaming updates.

Thanks for all the replys. AdrianH, I looked under Maintenance>Updates and I show streaming updates> enabled, connection> connection established, but Latest update received>---. In other words it shows it working but latest update is just a few dashes, ---, so what are you showing. Does this mean I have a problem. slybo

Maybe I should add that I just restarted my computer before looking, does it take some time before it would show one. I also got a regular update when I restarted, 120226-2.

I just look under c:>program files> avast software>defs. I had looked there a couple days ago and posted about seeing files with streaming in their name. I do not see any right now. I also see a folder with todays regular defs of 120226-2. So I am assuming that since I just got an regular update it replace the cloud update and I might have to wait for another cloud update to show up. Can anyone confirm this is how it works. New program new struff to learn, just want to be sure it is working. slybo

I haave found it often takes a while to provide that information after you start your machine.

Thanks AdrianH. I believe you are right, restarting the computer will cause this. I am off to do my monthly scanning. So I will be watching how the new avast does. I will be watching how the cloud updates work to be sure I do not have a problem. slybo

Streaming updates are active today, and "Latest update received" in AvastUI | Maintenance | Update reflects the last one, without reboot.  Looks like all the servers are coming online. 8)
