Quick question that I can't find the answer to: what is the default duration for automatic updates to the virus database?

Rather depends on the avast version you are using, which you don't mention, for avast! free version:
See avastUI, Settings, Updates, Auto-update interval and you will find it is 240 minutes, this can reduced to 120 minutes.

Hi,

I think the current public version checks for an update parallel to the on demand scan so it may happen that the database is updated in the middle of the scan and half of the results are from the old version depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Isn't there any internal setting or scheduling for the automatic update to happen? 4 hours?

Yes, around that time. There are several other triggers as well.
