Hey guys,
Please have a look at the screenshot below, just checked the stats of the firewall and it shows that its empty.. Doesnt it mean that the firewall isnt running properly?
Cheers!
-
Hi
Dracul I think best solution for you would be remove AIS with AswClear.exe in safe mode and install AIS again,do you sill have blank page in statistics tab?
Aswclear.exe: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Avast Internet Security:
- stable version 8.0.1483-http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117113.0
-RC2 Beta version 8.0.1485-http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120986.0
Thank you.
Bye

Definitely think something's amiss.
Just had the same thing happen here on a new fresh clean install of AIS 8.0., same place, same tab, same way. Traffic logging worked for a few days, then stopped. uninstall, aswclear, reboot, install and now everything is good.
Please follow JuninhoSlo advice in using aswclear.exe in Safe Mode. Be sure to have a copy of your license before you uninstall to save time in reactivating.

I actually did a clean install of Avast (about 10 times) but thats for a different issue that I had with the firewall (when V8 was out, I did a clean install and it didnt install the firewall, there was a driver problem, Avast NDS Miniport something..) but till I figured it out, I installed it about 10 times or more.. 4-5 times I did a clean install. You still reckon that it will help or is there any other solution you could think of? :)
-
I notice the time period said Last Year. Can you change it to say Today?
-
Last year actually means 'past year' check the months.. its blank for whatever time period i set..
-
What about under Firewall Settings. Is there any activity there?
-
If your behind a router with NAT you will not see much activity. Add a program to the block list and see what happens when that program tries to connect.
-
Just did a clean install, I had the earlier issue where the firewall wasnt installed and then I had to reinstall it. Then after loading to windows it crashed the first time, the second time took 5-10 minutes to load the desktop (the screen was totally blank till then), usually it loads in 10secs or less, because I have my OS on a SSD. Anyway still 0 activity.
-
If your behind a router with NAT you will not see much activity. Add a program to the block list and see what happens when that program tries to connect.
Nope no NAT, and its 0 activity. But yeah I ll give it a try :)
I blocked firefox and it seems to block access to the internet using firefox.. But still why doesnt it update the activity?
:-\
-
Do you have Windows Firewall turned off? Are you behind a router at all? Is there a hardware firewall built into your router? You can also download a firewall leak tester and see what happens.
-
Windows FW is turned on, I was told Avast FW and Windows FW both can run together without any problems..
No I'm sure my router doesnt have a firewall :) It seems to work but doesnt update the activity..
-
I just downloaded the newest version of Avast this morning, and I thought my firewall wasn't working. Nothing was showing up in the firewall log. I even disabled my router firewall, thinking it might be blocking traffic to Avast.
I found that when Avast is installed the firewall log is disabled. I had to turn it on. Avast is now logging blocked inbound, and outbound traffic, with my router firewall, and Windows firewall turned. They all work together just fine.
I turned it on here:
-
just did that.. still nothing :(
-
Try going to Control Panel, Administrative Services, and clicking on services and see if it shows the firewall running.
-
Yes it shows that the service has started..
-
Have you tried going to Control Panel, Programs and Features, and clicking on Avast and then Change?
-
The firewall component is installed.. its just that the graph isnt showing any activity..
-
Check your Network Adapter in Device Manager.
I have used Yahoo search, and I have searched Avast messages. There are a lot of people with the same problem.
I wish someone more knowledgeable than I am would get involved in this discussion, and help solve your problem.
-
Thanks Johnny, that what I did to resolve the issue with the firewall not being installed. There was Avast NDIS miniport filter or something and I couldnt install the firewall until I uninstalled it.. Not sure if these 2 are connected and I too hope one of the Devs reply as they would know inside and out..
-
Are these mini port filters only used in the 64 bit version of Windows? None show up with my network adapter.
I read one article where a person had 58 of them.
-
I'm not sure.. the thing is it was there earlier when Avast 8 was out, when I tried to do a clean installation I couldnt do it because of the filter. then I uninstalled it and installed and it worked fine. The filter wasnt there after that either. but later on it somehow appeared under network adapters, dont know how.. Now I uninstalled the filter and did a clean installation again and its still not there.. So Avast installation doesnt add them.. dont know how/why it appears and the purpose..
-
I did find out a little about NDIS filter drivers, even how to uninstall them in Kaspersky. The person doesn't explain it very well, but it will work with Avast.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff565492%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
http://www.ehow.com/how_6523127_remove-kaspersky-ndis-miniport.html
I read one article that said if you have a bad NDIS driver, it should uninstalled in Safe Mode, and then updated in Safe Mode.
I also found out I have an NDIS filter driver, even though it doesn't show up in Device Manager.

Download this then see if there is activity. http://www.testmypcsecurity.com/securitytests/firewall_test_suite.html
Also have you tried Shields Up?
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
Are you sure your router does not have a built in hardware firewall? What model and brand is it?
-
Johnny, Thanks I ll have a look.. I dont know how to install it again, I uninstalled it in normal bootup, not in safe mode.
Aventador, Yes I'm sure it doesnt have one, I have used multiple connections, like a USB dongle, personal hotspot on my iPhone, still no activity. Yes I tried shields up, according to that my ports are invisible.. but what I dont get is why there is no activity on the graph when it shows activity for other shields.
-
Aventador, the score was 190/340 15/34 were vulnerable.. If you have AIS installed, could you run the tests and let me know if u get the same result?
Still no activity by the way.. First ran it while windows firewall was active, then with it disabled, got the same results though..
EDIT: Weird part is, I get the same results when the firewall and all the shield are disabled, plus windows firewall..
-
Ok so if AIS's firewall is off and Windows firewall is off then and you can still pass Shields Up then your most likely behind a hardware firewall. The leak test I sent you is mainly a HIPS test. Hence the score. But to get a better score put the firewall in ask mode. I do not have AIS. Dont need it. Have you tried blocking something? Such as Chrome or Firefox then accessing the program and seeing what happens?
-
Which ISP are you using?
-
Well, firewall tests have their limitations: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=29259.msg247460#msg247460
If anything is going wrong with the drivers, I suggest uninstalling all previous firewalls, check network incompatible tools, made an avast installation from scratch.
1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml). Boot after you've run it. Repeat this for any major avast! version you have ever installed/upgraded in your computer.
6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
7. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade (http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php) your key from old versions.
8. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
-
@Aventador, Yes I know but its the same when I use my iPhone personal hotspot or my USB dongle connection. But I didnt run the test with those, will try later on as I cant switch connections at the moment.
@Tech, I already did that 2-3 times, didnt fix the issue :-\
-
Open the Firewall, click on settings in the Firewall, and then click on Network Profiles. I would like to know if the Firewall is detecting your Internet connection.
Attachment:
-
Yes it detects the ISP and it also detects a network change.
As for the firewall test, I tried it on my iPhone hotspot and ran the test, got the same results with the shields disabled.. so either the test is fake or there is something wrong..
-
Which firewall test? Shields Up? Did you actually read the site? Shields Up is a completely legit site and has been around for many of years. If you actually read the site it will detect and check your hardware firewall first. I can turn off Windows firewall and I get a perfect score from Shields Up. Why? Because I am behind a router with a hardware firewall. I disable the firewall in my router and I fail. You really need to start looking elsewhere. 3 pages and you still have no answer. Did you try blocking a program with AIS then try using that program? Block Chrome or Firefox and see what happens with the logs. As far as inbound logs the reason you do not see anything is due to the fact that your hardware firewalll or modem is filtering inbound traffic.
-
I was talking about CLT (comodo test)..
I can understand about the hardware firewall but when I use my iPhone's personal hotspot to connect, I get the same result. I will try shields up with my iPhone connection with all the shields + windows FW off.
I already blocked a program - firefox and yes it blocked the traffic, as in no internet access when its blocked. but nothing shows up on the statistics graph (see screenshot on the first post).
I contacted Avast help and they asked me to send them the logs, I sent them but no reply after that.
-
What is the name of the router you are using?
-
NetComm router.. But as I said I use my iphone's personal hotspot to connect to the net.. the iPhone doesnt have a hardware firewall so..
-
Type this in the URL location bar and hit enter.
192.168.1.1
-
If i'm on my wifi, it takes me to my router set up page. But when I'm using personal hotspot, nothing happens..
-
From what I have read that NetComm router should have a firewall. Can you find it in Set Up?
If you can find the router firewall, turn it off and see if Avast starts logging inbound and outbound traffic.
When I first started using Avast 8 the firewall logs were empty. I didn't look at statistics, so I don't know what that showed. I tried to turn the router firewall off, but It wouldn't let me. I had to call AT&T and have them disable it remotely. Then Avast started showing the firewall traffic.
When I turned the router firewall back on, both Avast and the router show the firewall traffic.
-
yeah but in my case, I tried using a different connection (my iPhones connection) and a USB dongle. they dont have a firewall and it still didnt show anything..
-
Does this look like your Setup Page?
http://emulators.netcomm.com.au/NB1300Plus4W/index-1.htm
If it does, just disable the firewall. Give Avast several minutes, and then check the firewall setting, and firewall log. If it's not logging in about five minutes. Turn you router firewall back on.
I don't know anything about the other devices. I'm just trying to help get the firewall working on your computer.
Where is Tech Help when you need them?
-
No its different. But my point is, if it doesnt show the statistics on the graph for other connections, it wont show for my router anyway.
And yeah, been over 2 days and still waiting to hear from Avast support.. or a dev atleast..
-
Hello Drakul,
I didn't quite get if you have uninstall the firewall driver after all or not. Avast NDIS filter driver IS the firewall. If you uninstall it as a troubleshooting, it wouldn't lead to anything spectacular.
Could you please send the following:
1. a setup.log from your last installation - or even better a support package generated by avast
2. a screenshot of the properties window of all your network adapters
3. and the command outputs from the following commands:
reg query HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AswFw /s
reg query HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AswNdis /s
reg query HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AswNdis2 /s
reg query HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AswNdisFlt /s
Anyway, if during any traffic (like browsing) the graph on the main firewall page doesn't show a thing - it is not working.
Thanks.
Lukas.

Hi Lukas,
I had some issues with Avast when V8 first came out. I tried to do a clean installation but it didnt let me install the firewall component. After checking the net I figured that it was because some error with Avast NDIS Filter. I got that driver error very often and I uninstalled it from device manager. Then I installed AIS 8 and the firewall component was installed without a problem, but NDIS Filter wasnt there under the network adapter. Basically I couldnt install Avast again without uninstalling the NDIS filter.
Last week I realized that its not showing any details on the graph so I was asked to do a clean installation again, and when I tried to reinstall NDIS filter was there again (with a driver error) and I couldnt install the firewall component. So I uninstalled it and installed AIS. Now there is no NDIS filter (earlier also it wasnt there but it showed up later on, I dont know how). But a clean installation did not install NDIS Filter.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=116253.msg902735#msg902735 << This is what happened earlier when V8 was out.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=110735.msg870633#msg870633 << I had NDIS Filter errors during V7 as well..
-
I ran the queries and the screenshots are below.
Query #4 gave an error by the way, I'm guessing thats the problem
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t70ao5 << you can download the support file from this link
-
I'm only allowed 4 attachments per post so I ll post them in 2 posts.
There were 2 unknown devices and when I tried to update them it said unable to do so but it showed the name - Avast NDIS Filter
-
The last 2..
-
DraKuL, thanks.
I'll post some tips shortly. It's definitely a problem with setup (installation).
Could you please post one more thing - the screenshot of the properties you get when going into network adapters window inside "Network and Sharing center".

[/size]See mine to guide you what I mean.

This one?

Hi Lukas,
Avast Level2 support sent an email and asked me to do the following -
1. uninstall avast8 - you should use our removal utility
( <http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility> )
2. restart and delete manually both avast folders. One in Program Files and one in Program Data.
Than check if in the adapter properties in control panels -> network adapter settings is not present "avast firewall NDIS filter miniport". If yes, remove it manually please.
3. Turn off Windows firewall
4. then clear all off-line content and cookies from your web browser and download our latest release
http://www.avast.com/download-software
and install it.
After successful installation could you double click on you license file to register your copy of avast.
5. Turn on Windows firewall
~ I did all that, and on the first attempt, I couldnt reinstall Avast, the setup crashed. Then I had to uninstall + run aswclear again, and reinstalled just now. Still there is no activity on the firewall statistics graph.
I uninstalled the 2 unknown netword adapters which were there in the screenshots and they are not there now. But in the network and sharing center it shows Avast NDIS Filter (above screenshot).
Also I noticed that Avast NDIS Filter just appeared under network adapters in device manager AFTER I uninstalled Avast.
Anyway whats the solution? I tried a proper clean installation + removing all entries from the netword adapters section in device manager.
-
DraKul I can see you still got problems with AIS,I,m sure you ran aswclear.exe in safe mode but have you tried Rejzor removal tool for Avast? I always use them when I install new version of AIS,so try Rejzor removal tool and see what will happend with AIS and firewall, don,t forget to run aswclear.exe first in safe and then Rejzor removal tool for Avast, good luck.
Rejzor Avast Cleanup Tool:https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=94a12102e5094675&id=94A12102E5094675!218&view=details
Thank you.

Hi JuninhoSlo,
Thanks, but Lukas is troubleshooting it right now, he said that reinstalling might not help and that this has not happened before..
EDIT: I tried it as well, just hoped that it would fix it, but it didnt :(
-
Its all good now :) Lukas worked his magic ;)
-
Its all good now :) Lukas worked his magic ;)
How, patch, program update (in beta, etc.) ?
-
Fixed some issues I had with my registry.
-
OK, just wondering it it might have been something that could help others with a similar issue.
-
Hi David,
in this particular case, NDIS related registry entries were corrupted. I don't know how to fix them :-) but it can be diagnosed from Windows setupapi log.
in C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log:
CoInstaller 1: failed(0x000005aa)!
Error 1450: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
and also by the value of:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NDIS\IfTypes\1\IfUsedNetLuidIndices
(if the value is very long, such as FD FF FF FF FF FF .... FF FF FF FF ) you got a problem.
With DraKuL we have been able to solve it by installing aswndisflt.sys (driver used on Windows 8 only), but this might not be a viable solution for everyone with this error.
L.

Thanks for the clarification lukor.
