Title: avast! Backup Beta for Android
Post by: reinhardholzner on May 15, 2013, 01:29:35 PM
Hi all,

today there is a great day for us at AVAST. We are releasing - TODAY - the avast! Backup Beta for Android.

Let me shortly introduce what avast! Backup Beta for Android is about.

WHO IS OUR TARGET USER?

avast! Backup Beta is the non-advanced user who wants to backup his or her phone data to the cloud, but offers features for advanced users as well.

It is designed to:
- be easy to use
- be focused on most important data
- be targeted solely at cloud storage
- not consume endless data communication quota
- offer some features for advanced users

WHICH DATA CAN BE BACKED UP?

avast! Backup offers to back up following data types to the cloud:
- contacts
- call log
- SMS
- images
- videos
- audio files
- apps

For advanced users, avast! Backup offers advanced ROOT features. If you got ROOT you can also back up app settings and app data to the cloud.

Further data types might be released in the future.

WHERE DOES IT BACK UP DATA TO?

At the moment, avast! Backup backs up data to Google Drive and is integrated to the https://my.avast.com account to manage the backup items. Further storage providers will come up over time.

It does not offer SD card backup because there is several tools for this out there already, and SD card backups are of not much sense, if you lose your phone :-).

DOES IT OFFER INCREMENTIAL BACKUP?

avast! Backup ONLY backs up incremential. Only changes will be uploaded, even for app settings. Changes are being detected automatically by avast! Backup on your device. As a result this reduces the load on your data communication channel in the best way possible.

HOW CAN I MANAGE MY BACKUP?

You can manage the backup from your device and from the https://my.avast.com account. You can also directly access the backup on Google Drive if you want to.
It is even possible to access backups from all your my.avast.com devices from the avast! Backup client itself - check it out!

BETA NOTE: in order not to confuse our existing user base, on https://my.avast.com account avast! Backup user interface parts not visible by default. They will show up once our servers recognize that avast! Backup Beta is installed on your device. This will change on final release.

IS THERE A DATA LIMIT?

For now, the only limit is your cloud storage limit (the sky :-)). AVAST does not impose limits on storage used or devices managed.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

Download it here (after short Beta registration): http://m.avast.com/backup

IS IT STABLE?

It is as stable as a Beta can get. Part of the beta purpose is to find out issues in real world scenarios, so your feedback is extremely important to us - especially for rooted phones as there is tons of different ROMs out there so we are unable to test each of them ourselves. Post it in this thread or drop an email to holzner@avast.com who is the team manager for this product.

Get going now! I am looking forward to your feedback!!

best regards
Reinhard

Working very well in my two Android devices:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus I9250 (maguro) running Rootbox ROM rooted.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (p4) running Beegee CyanogenMod 3.1.10 (CM 10.1) also rooted.

I have an error which is ff-backup.avast.com.  @ 20.45 it's working now. Is it better to have avast backup stored on the phone or the SD card?

avast! Backup does not work with SD card. You can only store online.

Avast Backup is running nice and smooth on my Samsung Galaxy S4, however due to the fact that this is a Brand New Android Cell Phone with Jelly Bean 4.2.2, Regular Firmware Updates (already got the first Sprint PCS Over the Air Update), and the fact that my new S4 is Insured under Sprint's TEP Insurance, I will NOT be ROOTING my S4 anytime soon. :-)

I was talking about the app of itself. Tho I did not make that clear in my question. :-)

Finally decided to go ahead and ROOT my device and found that I am still unable to use Rooted Mode possibly due to the fact that my Samsung Galaxy S4 is a NAND Protected Device even though ROOT Mode works just fine with Avast Anti-Theft Software. :-(

you can store wherever you want. however i usually do not recommend SD card as it is much more unreliable (and backup app is not very big @ ~ 2MB).

I've taken another screenshot and I do not have such file/directory.
It's not hidden either.
But, shouldn't the backup process go ahead and, at the end, eventually, report the issues?
Well, at least this is the behavior of avast! Backup/Mozy for PC.

maybe you just have custom recovery rom, but actually not really ROOTED your phone (for this a su binary needs to be present). NAND does not affect function of avast! Backup (as it actually does not WRITE to the system partition, but just uses some su features).

Fix permissions does actually nothing related to rooting.

A widget to run the backup won't be bad :)
Also, when I switch between apps (windows) the backup one does not require the PIN again as AMS does. Is it by design or it is a bug? Or, something changed in the last beta that override my setting asking for a PIN... ::)

did you enable PIN protection in backup?
Yes we decoupled PIN setting AMS/AT/BACKUP.

I've updated the beta and the state of the PIN changed (from enabled to disabled).
I'm still facing issues with the backup. It does not finish at all, errors and errors... Can I help troubleshoot? How?

If I have more than one device, it's difficult to find it in Google Drive due to automatic numbering of the folder.
Can you add a prefix set by the user, for example, "My Phone avast! Files (XXX.... XXX)"?

By the way, any info about Google Drive storage increasing to 25Gb?
Of course, I've run out of space already :'(

One thing I have missed - notification icon in the task bar when backup is running. One more option which may be useful - option to select one or more  files (or folder) to back up no matter what type it is.

LOL! ;D I just said my opinion, so maybe it may be set as selectable option to enable or disable it as it is in AMS?  8) Also, I think it should not be permanent, just visible when backup is in progress.

PS. Never complained about AMS icon :)

Hi,

avast! Backup Beta (4817) tested here on my 5 devices (4 smartphones with GB 2.3.4/2.3.7 resp. JB 4.1.2) and 1 tablet (JB 4.1.1).
Works so far....

BUT:

the selection of files which are backed up by avast! seems to be randomly for each device

e.g.:

i have some apps installed on every of my devices but only on a few a backup was done, the others report
"app file not backed up, app file is copy protected", why?

another example:

one app (a game), was backed up properly for the first time the app was installed, but after receiving an update
for that app avast! suddenly claims the new .apk as "copy protected"

Who's able to explain that strange behaviour?

P.S.: I agree to =YLAP='s suggestion about a notification icon in the taskbar while app is active
Title: Re: avast! Backup Beta for Android

Some paid apps from Play Store has copy protection, so can't be saved in back up. Recently I had to revive my Xperia ZL after bug in firmware update file and Sony has built-in back up app, which saves apps and settings too. Yet, it does not back up paid apps too. From 91 only 65 apps were fully restored with their settings. So at least avast warns about copy protected app.
Title: Re: avast! Backup Beta for Android

Hi =YLAP=,

thanks for your answer, that was my first thought too.
I know about the copy protection of paid apps, on my devices there are several apps with the possibility to backup (to SD)
which i have frequently used in the past.
But the same apps, paid or not, are backed up by avast! on one or two devices but not on the other.
And avast! reports on that devices these apps are copy protected although they are free apps.

So, I don't understand why avast! Backup Beta handles one and the same app in a different manner on different devices.

Is the Beta Over? There has been no new posts (or New Builds) in almost 2 weeks. Was there recently some kind of Holiday in Prague? There recently was a Memorial Day Holiday here in the U.S.A., I would personally think that it would have no effect at all on Avast Corporate Development?

1. I suggest a way to configure a double condition for backup wifi+charging. Right now, you can configure just one of them but not both simultaneously.
2. A way to exclude folders from backup (not only files by size).

Other suggestions:
1. Show an icon on notification bar while backing-up.
2. Inform the available space on Google Drive.
3. Integrate with AMS, i.e., inside one application you could open the other.

Some apps (most usually paid) are installed in an encrypted part of the Android file system. avast! could "decide" which is the case...

it is based on the storage location. if its in the encrypted part, we can not backup it.

The error message has something to do with an Android Graphics App or something similar. The error message is so long that I can NOT even see the Full Error Message on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Display Screen.

It was Android.Graphics.Nine.Drawable.somethingoranother, however, it looks like I may have had either an Android Virus or Android Malware that I got while downloading stuff from the Google Play Store.

Reinhard, the scheduling does not seem to be working or, at least, I can't say it is working as there is not a notification of it.
The backup is scheduled for wifi and powering but I cannot say if it is working. Is there a log?

Slightly Off Topic: Just installed the Over the Air Update for my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 (OTA), and just my luck that the new Firmware that came out on Monday contains something called Samsung Secure Boot which BOTH Locks the Boot Loader if you decide to Root the Phone AND also prevents you from installing further Firmware Updates as well! :-(

Sorry, have not had time to Reply until now, been busy Beta Testing Apple IOS 7.0 using my Apple Developer Program Membership, (I own a Sprint Apple IPhone 5 as a Secondary Device, and a Sprint Apple IPad as well) I've also been busy trying out Windows 8.1 Build 9431 Public Beta, also been busy trying out Windows Server 2012 R2 Build 9431 Public Beta as well. :-) When I use Avast Mobile Backup for Android with all my Favorite Apps Installed, it fails to complete the Backup with a File or Service called Graphics.Nine.Drawable, or Graphics,Nine,Auto,Drawable, or something similar. It works just fine on a Stock Installation with no Google Installed so it so it has to be one of my favorite Apps that is creating interference.

P.S. Also been having a Fun Time playing Candy Crush Saga and Trading Extra Lives, Moves, and Moving on to the next Level with all my Friends on Facebook as well. Have been spending so much time playing the game, have literally had no time to do much else. :-)

Another suggestion:
Ask for "all" superuser permissions at the first backup and not one by one.
I have to allow avast! Backup two or three times (saving the setting of course) and "something" asks for a different superuser permission later, in the middle of the backup. Stopping everything...

Well, it's embarrassing because I can only see that superuser error message is that it had been timeout.
Now I'm on 99% of finishing my first total backup and the superuser message is not appearing anymore.
Maybe some glitches of the multiply nightly ROM flashes... could it be?

Is there *any* possibility of avast! Backup is messing Microsoft One Note login/data?
I mean, I'm losing the login on Microsoft One Note and I have to add my credentials again, sync, etc.
I've set the avast! backup to freeze the app. Will try unchecking this option.
Thanks.

Just downloaded the beta (I had it before but this is a new handset) anyway I can't see my backed up data on my old handset on avast account, even tho my old handset is still down as active. So I have downloaded the beta only for me to a) have no way of downloading all of the stuff I have saved back down to my new handset. b) I have to re back up some of the old backed up stuff I (should) have on my old handset/back up. As in your program it is saying it's not backed up.

Update: I successfully Rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 (this time for real) using the instructions at a website called http://qbking77.com/ this method even works with the new MF9 Stock Firmware Update that started to get pushed out in the beginning of July! Root Mode is working just fine for me so far. No issues so far. I have avoided re-installing some of the Google Play Store Software that Avast Mobile Security was Flaging as Malicious, however and being just a little bit more cautious about what Apps that I put on my S4 from the Google Play Store.

did you delete your old phone instance?
if not, there should be an "archived" device on your account which contains the old data.

I'm getting "Licensing problem (Your licence is not valid)" issue. any way to fix this?

I use Google 2-step verification if that could be causing conflicts?

Question for patrice58: Why are you still running Windows Vista? Both my younger brother and me had horrible luck with that OS! Both of us noticed significant improvement in computer performance with BOTH Windows 7 AND Windows 8 OVER Windows Vista! As a result, the word Vista has forever left a horrible taste in my mouth. Just something you might consider.

Would we need to uninstall the beta to install the final release?
Would it worth to keep the bakuped files in Google Drive or they won't be able to be restored and then the better would be to uninstall the beta.
Shortly: does the beta worth to be kept installed or not?

(very likely) tomorrow the public beta of all our products (Mobile Security, Anti-Theft and Backup) will start. You should switch to that beta program then, it contains much newer builds.
Also there will be a free voucher for premium license that you can use for testing premium features.

Relax: Disregarding if you are premium customer or not, RESTORE of premium backed up contents will always be possible also without having premium license.
