I've never had a problem before but now WU wants to keep installing the same 3 Office 2007 updates over and over. They are in my installed updates list 3 times now.

Have never had a problem with WU either.
I had 1 also, Just hung and wouldn't finish installing. ???
It was the only optional install so I have set to ignore.

I have the same problem out of seven updates for win 7 all seven want to keep updating over and over again.I put them all on don't show again.

WU installed 5 updates yesterday and didn't have any problems.

I have ancient MS Office version so no updates for that and no subsequent problems.
For me it is the WU .NET Framework update nightmare, as that without doubt has caused me lots of grief in the past. I haven't yet been offered Windows Updates yet, probably later today.

It appears to be mostly the three that True Indian posted. Those are the same three giving me the issue. They're all for Office 2007 and older versions are not affected. If you don't have any Office things installed, you should be fine.

Just FYI
The update issue on my Win8 Pro I mentioned in my previous post (Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2876415) is not "Office" related.
I don't have MS Office installed.

I had it as well, was two 2007 microsoft office and an excel update that wouldnt install. Went away after I had installed them and rebooted my computer 3 times.

It seems that any Tweets or questions about this issue on Facebook at the official MS sites are being quickly deleted. They have acknowledged the problem however, and say they are working on it. There is a recommendation to uninstall the problem updates and then hide them in WU until a fix is forthcoming. It's not clear whether this comes directly from MS or not however. I personally have done it.

Glad I found this page just now: Since the 11th I've 2760411 already seven times;
2760588 also seven times and it's continuing to ask me for the same to repeat down-loading...

I have hidden the 3 updates so they are not installed repeatedly, but I have not uninstalled them yet.
At least Microsoft updated security bulletin MS13-073 acknowledging the fact that these Excel/Office updates are repeatedly offered and reinstalled. see More information " Known issues "

I don't have Office 7 installed, and I don't have the Excel Viewer 7 installed and the updates have been installed several times;
I don't even know why it updates what I don't have...

The main issue I had with those 29 updates, was for Excel 2003. (I actually had both Office 2003 & 2010 on this machine). Like many others, I kept getting a WU notice to update that one application. Finally just uninstalled Office 2003 since I use the 2010 version & rebooted. The issue eventually resolved.
The MBSA scan and also sfc /scannow I did earlier this morning did not show any problems. I did post a topic in both the Microsoft Win 7 and Secunia PSI Forums about this issue. It appears a lot of people are still experiencing problems...judging by the number of topic reply notifications I still continue to receive.

I unistalled the updates and hid them from WU. Now only the red tray icon from Secunia PSI reminds me about them.

It seems Microsoft finally fixed it or pull the affecting updates. They are not shonw in my hidden updates and MU does not show any critical updates anymore.

Well that's not the case for me on Win8 Pro with update KB2876415
It's still being presented.
Fortunately, it is list as 'Optional' for my OS so it will remain "hidden" ::)

I'm not doubting that Information.
I can only state what is happening with my OS and MU. :)

The issue is fixed. If you see the updates back as available when they are already installed, just click on "Check for updates" and let it complete. It will then report that no updates are available and they will no longer show up.

LOL The issue may be fixed for you, I'm still getting offered the same optional "failed update" KB2876415 published 09/10/13 I stated in my original post. This update hangs indefinitely!
I'm just saying.

If you have an update that is failing and showing that it failed, that is a different issue than what was being discussed. The updates in question here were showing that they had successfully been installed but would show back up as needing to be done. The particular update that is a problem for you was never mentioned in the reports about the Office 2007 updates.

I understand your points.
Failed for me simply meant it hangs and has to be cancelled. I believe Essexboy has the same issue with the same MU I have been talking about. As I also mentioned earlier, it is optional so I have it "hidden". No biggy!

The way I installed that updated was to boot the system in clean mode with no external services or drivers. It then installed with no problem, apart from having to set a clean boot and then reverse it :)

Are you happy with the clean boot procedure ?
Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
1.Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2.The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
Step 2: Configure selective startup options
1.In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
2.Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
3.Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
4.Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.

Not really but I consider that it is always nice to have all patches in place even if I do not need them at the moment

Had you tried not going through WU and instead downloading the package from the Microsoft Downloads site and then manually installing it? That always worked for me on the Vista machine here when Office 2003 and Works 9 updates would fail in WU.

In the past when having problems with dotnet updates I would install them in safe mode. Now Essexboy method is the best chance. Also there is a guy that deactivated avast! and WinPatrol ( no recomendable and I am not saying the issue is because avast! ) and was able to install it:

Well It looks like MS is becoming a bit careless because last time when I tried installing a .NET update on one of my XP test computers,it leaded into BSOD's and I had to clean boot to get it going.Damn,XP!!

Would disabling the NET.framework solve this issue at all.
Can the NET.framework be safely disabled in a general sense.?

I haven't had any problems with .NET and it's usage is so widespread these days that I would not recommend disabling or removing it.

Lets be clear, .net framework isn't an essential nor is it a part of the OS.
You only require it if you have a program that uses it and I have a few programs that do.
Without doubt the .net framework updates have been a pain in the rear for me over the years. I have had lots of failures of the update and a number that had to be installed many times as it kept being notified again.

If you have an ATI/AMD graphics card, you can't update your drivers without having at least .NET 2.0. An ever increasing amount of other software is employing the framework as well. It has reached the point where you could say it is practically essential.
I have never had a problem with a .NET update since it first came out. My only complaint is that sometimes the updating takes a very long time to complete, especially on older machines.

My comment about installing dotnet updates ( .NET Framework ) was just an example to schmidthouse for another way to try to install KB2876415. Yes, dotnets always been a pain, but nothing to do with this patch.

I agree with DavidR, with one exception: XP does not come with dotnet unless you have a program that needs it and you put it there, or that program automatically installs that specific dotnet on installation, but Win 7 comes with .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 installed already. As far as I know, .NET 1.0 is still optional, as is .NET 4.0. We're talking native dotnet applications supported by the newer os's whereas they weren't before. Vista may be the same as Win 7, but I do not know that. It's Microsoft that is building their os's to run these from the get-go now. From what I understand, removing these native dotnets may cause problems that may or may not be recoverable in that os.

Even Geforce cards requires .net 4 so another program that still needs it.

Rather depends on the card and ForceWare version. So not on this card (Geforce GT 610 silent/pasive card) or system (XP Pro SP3) it doesn't.
You might have noticed/guessed I'm not a gamer so I don't chase the latest drivers, I still have ForceWare 306.23 that came on the setup DVD.
