[Reboot]
- Then click the Run Fix button at the top
- Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
- Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN
Please download AdwCleaner (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/) by Xplode onto your desktop.
- Close all open programs and internet browsers.
- Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
- Click on Scan.
- After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
- Confirm each time with Ok.
- Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
- Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
- You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-
sorry i am so slow, but all of this is unfamiliar.
my computer hung up while running the fix.
I am writing this from my other computer,
and have not tried to re-boot the other one.
please tell what I should do.
-
Stop OTL
Temporarily uninstall MBAM and then run the OTL fix again please
-
sorry , am having problems with the laptop.
I will post it as soon as I can get it up and running.
-
OK
finally have scan
-
AdwCleaner should clear the residue, let me know how the computer is behaving when it has completed
-
ok, it is running now, and already running better
I have questions....
1. if I have other drives on my network, will they be infected with the same thing?
2. should I delete backups of the infected computer and make new backups?
3. why didn't the av and malware scans find this infection?
-
problem....
AppName: aswmbr.exe AppVer: 0.9.9.1771 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.6055 Offset: 000192f9
C:\DOCUME~1\VTXJENNY\LOCALS~1\Temp\2dc_appcompat.txt
-
i could not copy all the error message, and when i sent to MS, then the aswmbr.exe closed
-
AswMBR is not needed and it does sometimes fail to run for no apparent reason, so it is not a problem
1. if I have other drives on my network, will they be infected with the same thing?
2. should I delete backups of the infected computer and make new backups?
3. why didn't the av and malware scans find this infection?
1. Very unlikely
2. It would be prudent to do that
3. These are not viruses as such but potentially unwanted programmes. New ones are released almost daily so it is hard to keep up. Avast only checks for PUP's on a bootscan or unless specifically checked. Putting the system to Hardened mode : Aggressive will block most of them
Have you run AdwCleaner yet ?
-
i am running it again, hope it does nt crash again.
-
it crashed again, at the same place...is there somewhere that a copy of the report sent to MS is on my computer so I can send you a copy of it. There are 55 .dll listed, and a bunch of other stuff.
-
i am running chkdisk to see if there are errors
on the disk, and will try to run AswMBR.exe again.
-
i have tried to run AdwCleaner.exe at least 4 times. i did the chkdsk, disconeccted from the internet, turned off avast and turned off avast service, but it would still crash at the same spot.
i saved the log file, but i see that it is empty.
-
Is it AdwCleaner or AswMBR that is causing the crash ? If AdwCleaner then replace it with this programme
Please download Junkware Removal Tool (http://thisisudax.org/downloads/JRT.exe) to your desktop.
- Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator" the tool will open and start scanning your system
- please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications
- On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
- post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
-
Ok, i am back.
sorry if i was confused as to which program i was to run.
here is AdwCleaner log and JRT.txt
i did not do anything with the scan from AdwCleaner
-
No problem, run AdwCleaner again, scan and then select clean
How is the computer behaving now ?
-
here is the report
the computer seems to be running ok....as it was prior to the PUP problem
scorpian saver still appears on the add/remove programs,
however it does not work to remove
-
i did find a file on the computer called 'tb.log'
that i think was part of the installation
that caused all the problems.
do you want me to send that to you?
your help and patience has been greatly appreciated,
and you've saved me a lot of time and headaches.
-
Did you select clean for AdwCleaner ?
Lets remove the scorpion now. No need to re-run OTL scan

scorpian saver still appears on the add/remove programs
-
Could you try to uninstall via control panel now.. Does windows offer to remove the entry
-
yes , windows tries to uninstall, but it cannot find the reference files to do that.
-
Intriguing as the entry for it in the registry is no longer present
Could you run AdwCleaner one more time and select clean after the scan has completed
-
yes will run again.
when i click to uninstall scorpian saver, it says the path c:\\temp\\t.msi cannot be found and try to locate the t.msi installation file . then it says the istallation file cannot be located.
i tried to find this file yesterday (windows search) before anything was fixed, and could not find.

There is one other way to remove it, but it is a bit of an overkill
Download and Install Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)
- Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
- Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_disclaimer_ENG.png)
- When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
- Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.
Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
-
Everything seems to be running ok, perhaps a bit faster than before.
And, scorpian saver is GONE from add/remove programs.
Thank you so much for all your hard work.
Here are the reports.
-
In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way :)

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.
: Keep Java Updated :
WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/eliseackerman/2013/01/11/us-department-of-homeland-security-calls-on-computer-users-to-disable-java/) and this article (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/us-warns-java-software-security-concerns-escalate-1B7938755).
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser (http://www.geekstogo.com/2600/how-to-disable-java-in-your-web-browser/) and How to unplug Java from the browser (http://krebsonsecurity.com/how-to-unplug-java-from-the-browser/))
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
CryptoPrevent (http://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/) install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/CryptoPrevent.JPG)
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).
Update and run weekly to keep your system clean
Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link
If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport (http://www.trusteer.com/Products/Trusteer-Rapport-for-Online-Banking)
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit - Microsoft Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ? (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/225044-preventing-malware-and-safe-computing/)Keep safe

essexboy...thank you so much for your help with my computer problem; I am so grateful there are still people like you (few and far between) who take pride in what they do.
I have performed all the cleanup tasks. OTL was not able to remove all the restore points, but I failed to write down the error code, and the report was removed.
I know exactly what caused this recent problem...I was using Goggle Chrome and clicked on a pop-up window that fooled me into believing my browser was out of date....hense big problems. However, I know there were other issues with this computer, and I think those have been fixed as well, so a BIG thank you.
This morning I deleted my backups on this computer and have created a fresh backup, cleaned up everything per your instructions, and will be implementing your recommendations (BIG thank you, again) and the other recommendations from the link, within the next couple of days.
In light of my increasing paranoia about hackers and virus/malware intrusions, I’ve decided to set up separate computers for different types of computer tasks. In other words, I will only do online financial work on 1 computer, online games (Java intensive) on another computer, and email/surfing the web on a 3rd computer, with each one having a separate backup disk, and will reformat usb data travelers much more frequently. This will be more inconvenient, and make maintenance more complicated, but will hopefully be more secure. The upside of keeping tasks separate, is the ability to reformat periodically with less effort and quicker, and should I have a hard disk failure (which happened last month), I will not be so stressed out about loosing everything. LOL Hopefully all 3 will not die at the same time.

To prevent USB infections download and install this small programme, it is very unobtrusive and fire and forget :)
Download MCShield (http://amf.mycity.rs/mcshield/downloads.html) to your desktop and install
It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock
Then in the control centre select scanner and tick unhide items on flash drives
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/mcshield%20unhide.JPG)
Plug in the drive and McShield will start a scan
You are now set up for any USB's that are inserted so you can forget about it
-
will do, thanks again
-
My pleasure :)
-
am not sure if these problems are related or not. I need to backup some files to cd's and have been having difficulty with this, and have been unable to locate info via web search. Dell's site offers analysis but I have not been able to get it to work.
1. cannot access Dell System Detect via the Dell Support site. The program downloads, installs and runs locally, however it will not show analytics on Dell Support.
2. format cd not available with right click menu
Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
-
Is the drive "Recording Enabled"?
Open My Computer, right click on your CD:\ Drive, choose properties, select the "Recording" tab and make sure "Enable CD Recording on this Drive" is checked and click OK.
-
yes it's enabled
-
Could you run shellexview and if the option is in the list then tick it to activate http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
-
I think it might be best if I just do a repair to win xp...i have a couple of other issues with windows on this computer, so I think by doing the repair those will be fixed as well
-
For sure, are you happy with the repair procedure ? If not I can point you to a tutorial
-
i have done it in the past and am comfortable doing it again. thank you again for your help.
-
No problem :)
