What happens when you try a different PDF reader like Nitro Reader?

If you're using Chrome as you browser, it can also open PDF files. :)

I have not tried a different program to open the pdf files as suggested
I did resort back to the earlier version of adobe reader ( 10 ) and all is fine

Would like to try and find out why the update from adobe no longer works with Avast
I also prefer to use Firefox not Chrome .

Thanks for the suggestions
Kind Regards

Have you tried doing a repair of Avast?

Avast doesn't block PDF files per say unless they are infected. Have you changed any of the settings in Avast ???
Try resetting Avast to it's default settings and see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried uninstalling Adobe Reader XI and then re-install it?  ???

We are trying to help but this is the first time I have heard of this issue...most perplexing indeed.

Try doing what Para-Noid suggested. By the way, I forgot to mention in my previous post is that what was your previous antivirus software? McAfee, Norton, or etc. Did you run their removal/uninstaller tool before installing Avast? Removal tools can be found here http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146. After you have used your previous antivirus removal tool... uninstall avast via add/remove and use the avast uninstall utility. Reinstall avast and do a manual restart after it finishes a quick start up scan after installation.

To successfully install or re-install Avast, just follow the link in my signature for step by step instructions.
This includes links to 3rd party removal tools, the Avast removal tool and direct download links for all of the Avast versions. :)

Your welcome. It seems that whatever the reason it had with Adobe Reader and Avast and it has now been solved. If you want to still use pdf program consider downloading and installing Foxit Reader via here http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/

This is a great alternative to Adobe Reader. Also before installing make sure you uncheck any optional program that gets offered as part of the installation i.e. google toolbar, yahoo toolbar, and etc etc.

Was it resolved? I don't consider deleting Adobe Reader XI and using another PDF reader as anything other than the crudest sort of solution.

"on said he was happy to use Firefox. There is a Firefox Adobe Plugin current version:  Adobe Acrobat 11.0.8.4 which can be installed in Firefox from its Tools > Add-ons link.

Opera has a similar option too.

Maybe give it a try just to see if it causes the same problem with Avast or not.

[/quote]      Hi , David here is a bit of info for you
Operating system Windows 7 Ultimate 64 , Avast Free Antivirus 2015 ,
The previous version of Adobe ( Ver 10 )  & Avast had no problems whatsoever everything ran and opened as it should with a double click .
I did delete the updated version of Adobe and reinstalled the previous version of Adobe (10) and all was fine .
Ran the update for Adobe back to version 11 and the problem returned .
And for Cluster-Lizard2014 if a fix works its not crude its a fix to a problem with the desired ending  i now have Foxit Advanced PDF Editor and everything works as it should

Thanks again Guys

It is a fix but it isn't a good fix. Foxit is a great alternative to Adobe Reader, I have it on my laptop as well as I had to use it when I found Adobe Reader had stopped working, for unrelated reasons, eons ago.

My point is that something is broken in your set up and all you've done is use the simplest of work arounds: a replacement program. That is a crude solution because whatever the problem is it is still there.

I understand what you saying . And if something is fixed no matter how its done then its Fixed  ;)crude or not . And the only thing that was not working correctly on my pc was Adobe Reader version 11 . Now that is no longer installed I have a program that works just as well i wouldn't say the problem is still there as you seem to think . ITS FIXED
Cheers
Ps maybe when Adobe is updated again i might give it a whirl to see what happens

Cheers

Is it safe to say that Foxit Reader (Free Version) is way better than Nitro PDF (Free version)? The nitro free version is only at version 3 which was released back in August 1, 2013. Where as the Foxit Reader free version has been updating at a constant period. Latest version is 7.0.6.1126 which was released just last month December 1, 2014

If you only need a basic light reader then I'd suggest Sumatra, for a reader with more features and the best rendering around PDF XChange viewer is my pick http://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer

Foxit is becoming bloated like Nitro but neither are as bloated as Adobe.

Sc0Rpi0n does not say if Adobe XI is running with Protected Mode enabled.
