Soooo - just let these things update themselves, they'll be fine - NOT.
The recent, emergency update, of Avast rendered itself useless on my machine. I uninstalled and tried AVG (you guys are the same company now right), which also turned out to be an operating system crippler. Tried reloading, fixing, uninstalling, re-installing. And finally I've had to reinstall windows.
"The UI failed to load - oooo, this is embarresing" on BOTH bits of software. Slowly programs stop responding until finally I can't even shut down without resorting to 5 seconds on the power button.
Now I have weeks of work re-configuring everything I need to get working again!
Thanks.

Are you using any other security program?

I'm going through the same thing on 4 machines. So far this is a nightmare. I tried installing AVG and it fails 3/4 the way through. Yes, I unstalled and rebooted. Avast I used Avast clear through safe mode.
Here is my topic.

My system booted into something called a "Temporary Desktop" after a very recent update.
See: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0
Fortunately, rebooting solved the problem but it was a very strange event, at least to me.

I have experienced similar issues after I installed the update to my Avast Pro Antivirus on my Windows 10 64 bit laptop. I had black screens, non-responsive screens/apps, most apps including notepad and task manager would not load and I received the following error numerous times "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close application." After much aggravation and trying different things, I realized there is a definite issue with this latest version 17.2.2288! I had to start Windows in safe mode to uninstall Avast completely. That stopped ALL the issues. I tried downloading a complete latest version of Avast and installing, but the same issues came back. So again, uninstalled and now frustrated - I just want to back to the last working version but cannot find any archived versions on Avast site.
