Title: file could not be scanned
Post by: ogden on July 05, 2004, 03:49:11 AM
I am new to this forum. After using the avast Virus Cleaning Tool version 1.0.157 Unicode, which came with my avast 4 Pro edition, I get the following typical message :

Memory scanning started...
No virus body found in memory.
Memory scanning finished (6.6s).
----------
Files scanning started...
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB824141$\user32.dll... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB824141$\win32k.sys... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB828035$\msgsvc.dll... file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB828035$\wkssvc.dll... file could not be scanned!

No virus body found.
Files scanning finished  (15781 files, 0 infected, 554.2s).
Drives scanned: C:

The list is about 10 times longer than this.

MY QUESTION  :  Should I be concerned about the message ...".file could not be scanned!...???. Are those particular files proteced by some virus or something ???. or is the result OK.

Any advice welcome
Ogden

Ogden, wellcome to avast forums!  8)
I think you could sleep with peace and joy  ;)
No problems, that files are part of the Windows patches uninstallation.
But, in my case, I run a scan right now and my files could be scanned, they are not locked  ::)

On some systems, some of the windows update (backup) files are locked. You don't have to worry about them, it's OK.
(Though I would like to know why they are locked only on some systems... anybody knows?)

Igor,
Maybe we need another Patch from Microsoft? ;D

Those files are related to the hotfixes installs from microsoft. Unless you think you need/want  to remove them anywhere in the future, you can safely remove them. I have created a little vb script that removes all, as I call it, leftovers of the hotfixes install.

Sometimes, for me, Windows Update site do not recognize the installed patches because I deleted the hotfixes backup... A Registry cleaner will remove the entries on the Add/Remove program applet. Why does this occur?

Any answer for Igor's question?  ::)

Thanks to 'Technical' and others for your response to my question, which puts me at ease. Your collective knowledge on this and other related matters is mind boggling and I will never attempt to follow in your footsteps.

I am quite happy to accept your advice and when I get the time (soon), I will follow through with advice from  Stephan 123  - (download all the updates from windows update and do a full scan with avast ) and Atras (remove them).

Regards
Ogden

Remember, it's as important to keep your operating system up-to-date as it is to keep your virus program up-to-date.
In order to stay safe, all systems must work together otherwise, you'll only fight a loosing battle.

Sorry if I use 'too technical' words... I tried to be simple.
Follow Bob's advice  ;)

Thank you Bob and Technical.

On the contrary, it is I who must come up to speed a bit, and acquaint myself with some of the terminology so that I can use these tools (and this great forum) to my advantage.

Hi ogden ... welcome to the greatest forums ever!

I find that it is a good idea to visit Windows Update site at least once a month. This way, the updates you may need from time to time will be less time consumming. Your computer will run better and will be safer to use.

Actually to be as safe as possible, windows update should be set to Automatic. Hopefully your operating system permits this option.
The same holds true for Avast!

You are right, Bob! I guess I mis-stated that part.    :(

We all have those momentary losses of memory. Me included.
I think they call them 'Brain F*rts' :-[
