Woke up this morning and turned my computer on. To my surprise my system crashed, giving me a BSOD. I was finally able to log in after a second attempt, opened BlueScreenView and received the following:
Mini101110-01.dmp 10/11/2010 9:32:51 AM BAD_POOL_CALLER 0x000000c2 0x00000007 0x0000110b 0x08900006 0xae3e0b88 aswSP.SYS aswSP.SYS+1cb50 avast! self protection module avast! Antivirus System AVAST Software 5.0.677.0 32-bit C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini101110-01.dmp 2 15 6002
I don't recall Avast ever causing a system crash before. Incidentally I upgraded to version 5.0.677 about a week ago.
Has anyone experienced this problem? How did you resolve it? Thank you.

Would you happen to have any other security software installed on this pc?

@zubina,
thanks for minidump. This bug was already fixed in the internal version – I've recompiled it against fixed version of the aswSP.sys driver, please follow these steps:
1) Download patch for:
- 32-bit OS: http://public.avast.com/~kurtin/public/sp_01/x86_patch.zip (100kb)
- 64-bit OS: http://public.avast.com/~kurtin/public/sp_01/x64_patch.zip (70kb)
2) Stop avast self-defense (avast settings -> Troubleshooting page)
3) Copy *.sys and *.sys.sum to \Windows\System32\Drivers and \Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast\setup\inf folders (overwrite existing) [*** or backup/rename original files]
4) Re-enable avast self defense
5) Restart the computer

Has there been an update to fix this? Or is the above the only solution as of yet?
I just recevied a BSOD today.
STOP 0x000000D1 (0x9DEC5CF0,0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x97291489)

See my other thread "aswSP.sys BSOD" started today for another BSOD related to aswSP.sys, it does not seem to be the same crash, at least not in the same part of the driver.
