Title: Program update 7.0.1451
Post by: sedina on June 28, 2012, 07:23:32 PM
Hi all,

I'm glad to announce new program update of avast! Free AV / Pro AV / Internet Security (version 7.0.1451).

This program update contains the following major features:
* Changes in the autosandbox module
* Improvements in Remote Assistance (support for UAC prompts etc)
* Improvements in SafeZone (protection against kernel-mode keyloggers;  Updated SafeZone Browser; clipboard sharing, etc.)
* Outlook plugin redesign
* Opera support in WebRep
* SiteCorrect module for the detection of unwanted websites
* Windows 8 compatibility updates
* Emergency Updater

Download locations:
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved). Also, you can use build-in updater.

thanks for your feedback during beta testing!

Pavel

Just as expected! AutoSandbox close button still hasn't been fixed! It still gives the same error just like previous betas and the release candidate. Also I still don't see the yellow border with the AutoSandbox tag for programs, except for the AutoSandbox test tool...

Manual Program Update from regular 7.0.1426 avast free version worked fine; shows option to try AIS for 20 days or just the Essential update.

Install went OK on my win7 netbook, on reboot you get the complete your avast software update screen, ensure you uncheck the Chrome bits before clicking the Finish button.

Now about to update the RC1 1447 build on my XP Pro system.

Confirm the same issue as Bob on my RC1 7.0.1447 build, checking for a program update from the UI reports the program is up to date. It is as though the RC1 build is only looking for a beta/RC update availability.

I tried a Repair followed by an Update from Control Panel, add remove programs and that also reported having the latest program version.

Updated manually to Avast Free 7.0.1451 now Application Layer Gateway fails to start, Notification that windows firewall is off, although it does come on, but no alg.exe running in task manager or not running in sevices....XP Pro sp3

Added...I seemed to have fixed this by setting Avast to load after other system services...alg.exe is now running at start up, shows in task manager and in services, no problems now with windows firewall...all seems well.

I can confirm too. It looks like we have to use the installer to update.

Crashed repeatedly on trying to run an upgrade from install package, upgrade via GUI not available/not working.

Clean uninstall, then fresh install of AIS with only antivirus and firewall.  Yet again the sandbox was clearly seen installing and interferes with IE9 .

Despite being reported numerous times the same installer issue is present. Fesh install , go to Control Panel > All Programs > Avast > Change > add or remove any feature > restart and WebShield no longer functions , repair will not fix this so a re install is required .

Firewall fails to load/start on each restart. Have tried repair, run a new install and the issues remain so Avast is now permanently off my Win7 partition, just using avast4 on my Linux install which will be my primary desktop from, now on.

Same here.  Updated by overinstalling.  After unchecking Google Chrome, did an Express Install.  Most settings survived the overinstall, except Mail Shield was reinabled.  I also had to register anew, even though I'd done a Clean install with 7.0.1442 Beta.

Is anyone else having a problem with the latest release of avast (7.0.1451) and receiving email via Thunderbird?

I just updated to avast 7.0.1451 and, without making any changes what-so-ever to either Thunderbird or avast, Thunderbird stopped receiving any emails.  Before the update it was receiving just fine.  By the way, the email accounts are gmail and hotmail.

I played around a little bit with the security settings of Thunderbird and avast and finally got it to work, but only by setting the security in Thunderbird to "SSL/TLS".  The "Expert Settings" in avast for the Mail Shield I left unchanged - which are currently set to also have SSL security.  Another peculiar thing - the Mail Shield in avast shows NO activity at all.  It is as if the Mail Shield in avast says it is running but for some reason it is not.

Can anyone who uses Thunderbird confirm what I'm seeing or is there something screwy with my system.

BTW, my OS in Windows 7 64bit.

Yes, I'm holding off on the use of the avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe to test any fix that might be released. Or what a novel idea if the new Emergency thingy could be put into practice. Though I can't even see an entry for it in the task scheduler.

One sort-of benefit to not personally playing with the betas ... update from 1426 went just fine via the UI Maintenance, including picking up the proper registration info.

Just to clear up any confusion about the Chrome installation option, that choice doesn't show up until after rebooting, at least on XP.

Installed using the internal updater and so far so good.

Sending/Rec'g email using Thunderbird works.

chkdsk (error-checking) is also working.

Updated from GUI no problem.

Downloaded installer file just in case no problem

Ran Quick Scan 3:25 minutes on my fastest computer.  Fastest ever and faster than the download of the installer file. ;D

By way of comparison Malwarebytes Quick Scan took 86 seconds.

Neither scan found anything which is how I like it. :)

BTW, the servers.def file for the beta testers apparently hasn't been updated yet, so users who have installed the betas aren't getting the update to the release version yet. We will fix this tomorrow morning. In the meanwhile, if you don't feel like waiting, you can pull the full installer and run that (as some of you have already done).

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks

SiteCorrect.

1. When I typed in avats.com I got the message

2. When I typed in Kazperzky.com Firefox Awesome bar took me directly to Kaspersky.com

3. When I typed in Nortan.com Firefox Awesome bar took me to Nortan.com, which is a legit website

4. When I typed in Macafie.com Firefox blocked me

No message from SiteCorrect in last three instances.

From the results of the very small sample I prefer Firefox Awesome bar to SiteCorrect so far.

Hi all.

Just to say that there was NO update button for me in avast! UI to update from avast! 7 RC1.

Uninstalled avast! 7 RC1 and did a FRESH CLEAN install of avast! FREE 7.0.1451 and everything for me seems to be running smoother and better than 7.0.1426.

The ONLY thing that I find that is NOT working for me is the Webrep plugin for FireFox 13, apart from that everything is running as smooth as ever.

Thank you Avast! team for a great job well done :)

happy avast user.

+1 (newest final 20.0.1132.43)

i must say i am a little confused. this issue was reported on the former final version and throughout all new betas and the rc by several people and now that the new final hit the masses, it's still not working? i have never seen any mod or developer reply to this issue either, almost as if it gets ignored on purpose!

Made a clean install of .1451.

      - SiteCorrect module still not working on my machine
      - Account (my.avast.com) still not working. System does not show under devices.
      - one bug reported too late in the beta section. See   http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100153.msg800689#msg800689
found its way into final release

The good news: "chkdsk" on the OS partition scheduled from running system is working again during restart.

Thanks avast! team.

Updated through GUI on Win 7 64 and all is well. I even changed the installation afterwards to include Browser Protection so I could test Site Correct. Every shield is still working fine and so is everything else except SiteCorrect. I don't see it doing anything in IE9 and the ugly webrep bar is there and running. How is SiteCorrect supposed to work? If it really doesn't do anything, I'm getting rid of WebRep because I hate it's implementation in IE.

Updated via GUI from 7.0.1426.

I think there's a small bug with webrep, see attached screenshot -

Site correction module doesnt seem to be working and I'm assuming that it ha something to do with this...

EDIT : Now its gone but site correction still isnt working, I checked the settings and its ok. - I tested by entering 'avats.com' it still takes me to that website. OR  should it ALWAYS be www(dot)WrongSiteName(dot)com ? but then it would defeat the purpose as most of us enter the site without 'www' - eg - avats.com

Hi.  Long time reader, first time poster.   I updated both of my computers (desktop and laptop) to Avast Internet Security 7.0.1451 a few hours ago.  I used the internal program updater.   I thought everything was going well until I tested out running Google Chrome sandboxed.  When I go to EICAR and click on one of their files, I get an Avast warning as normal.  When I close the browser, however, I get an instant crash and computer reboot.  This does not happen if I run Chrome outside the sandbox and check the EICAR files.  It does not happen with Firefox or IE either.  It happens with Chrome sandboxed on both my laptop and desktop.  I have repeated it about three times on both machines.  Oh, it also only seems to happen when a warning notice has been encountered.  If I run Chrome sandboxed and just go to regular pages, it closes without crashing the computer.

I am uninstalling and going back to the previous version of Avast Internet Security on my laptop.  I will see how it goes.

Here are the specifics of my machines:

Desktop – AMD Phenom IIx4 820 2800Mhz, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, 6GB RAM, Avast Internet Security 7.0.1451, MBAM Pro 1.61.0.1400 Realtime, Google Chrome 19.0.1084.56 m

Laptop - Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor SU7300 : 1.3 GHz, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, 4GB RAM, Avast Internet Security 7.0.1451, MBAM Pro 1.61.0.1400 Realtime, Google Chrome 19.0.1084.56 m

Ok, here we go:

Clean install on freshly installed OS (XP SP3): Maybe not related to  avast, but the system worked just fine until I installed avast. Shortly after installing avast, I Got a BSOD apparently caused by scsiport.sys. Rebooted and the "additional protection" tab was completely missing. Seemed to work fine after that. Uninstalled and re-installed and this time the tab appeared.

On my machine (win7 x64, 8GB), updated using the installer over v 1426, everything seems fine...

It looks like my Chrome just updated to 20.0.1132.47 m.  Now when I go to SafeZone, the browser does not start but an error box pops up.  It says these exact words:

The exception Breakpoint
A breakpoint has been reached
(0x80000003) occurred in the application at location 0x625ac1d0.
Click Ok to terminate the program

Outside of SafeZone, Chrome still crashes when running sandboxed as I described above.  I guess I should also mention that I had been using SafeZone with no problems before updating.

I rolled my laptop back to version 7.0.1426 of Avast Internet Security and everything is running fine.  I did have to reinstall two times as the first time I got a lot of SafeZone weirdness like seven or eight browser windows popping up immediately upon entering the Zone.  I uninstalled, ran the aswclear program and reinstalled and now it is fine.

I did have to update Chrome on my laptop.  I was getting profile error messages when I tried to start the 19. whatever version I was using.

I am leaving the desktop on the new version for now but will probably uninstall it in the morning here in Texas.  I still love Avast enough that I bought a new two year license yesterday!

After updating to program 7.0.1451, my laptop had to restart (Avast pop-up). I then proceeded to restart my laptop, and when I turn it goes back on, I notice the windows "Welcome" screen hangs on for much more than usual. I seem worried, and after clicking the "Finalize Update" Avast pop-up, I shut down. I leave it for five minutes, then I turn it on again. The "Welcome" screen just hangs around for 25 seconds or so, when it used to only hang around for like… 2-3 seconds!

I haven't installed ANYTHING but Avast program update lately, should I just System Restore to a bit hours before this issue? It really gets on my skin… has anyone had this?

How can I roll back to the previous version without having to reinstall from scratch?

Now I updated my notebook from 1426 using the GUI and after rebooting, the "additional protection" tab disappeared...win7 x86.
Had to uninstall, reboot, then re-install to get the tab back.
Second time this happens (2 out of 3), so there's definitely s/thing wrong with the new version...

A few notes:

1. In some versions/revisions of Chrome, the Script Shield indeed isn't working. The new version (7.0.1451) covers a slightly broader set than the previous one, but we're aware of the fact that some versions are still not supported. Unfortunately, the way Script Shield works makes it quite difficult to make it functional across all browsers and their versions. That said, we're trying to cover as many versions as possible, and the respective changes don't usually have to wait till the next program update but can actually be pushed out by means of virus definition updates.

2. We have seen some cases where the SafeZone browser was crashing. This was because of some corruption of its internal data. What usually works is to reset the SafeZone contents (Additional Protection -> SafeZone -> Settings -> Reset SafeZone).

3. SiteCorrect should work if the following two conditions are met: 1) the avast plugin (usually still referred to as the "WebRep" plugin) is installed in the browser, b) SiteCorrect is enabled in avast's Additional Protection -> Browser Protection -> Settings -> SiteCorrect.

4. SiteCorrect's database is extensive but far from complete. We will be improving it moving forward.

5. If you encounter any kind of BSOD, it would be really appreciated to submit the corresponding dump files. The folks over here can advice you on how to do that.

Thanks
Vlk

Okay, my default search provider is Google. I also have the automatic suggestions turned on. Would that conflict with and prevent SiteCorrect from working? It doesn't seem to do anything for me in either IE or Chrome with everything turned on and installed.

I take that back now, it does work in Chrome. I am still not going to use WebRep in IE though because of the full toolbar issue.

BTW, the servers.def file for the beta testers apparently hasn't been updated yet, so users who have installed the betas aren't getting the update to the release version yet. We will fix this tomorrow morning.

It still doesn't work, guess it's too early in the morning... ;D
I will try again later...

I tried to update two boxes running Win 7 (64-bit) from 7.0.1426 to 7.0.1451 (Internet Security 7). Went through the GUI, and everything seemed fine. I rebooted, and both machines displayed the same error:

avast! will not be able to protect mail/news (error 10045).
Please check that the avast! service (AvastSvc.exe) is not blocked by your personal firewall.

The network connection is completely disabled. If I look in avast, it says "real-time shields: off" and "urgent: web shield off." Trying to turn them on does nothing. I did a clean uninstall of avast IS with the aswclear utility, and then installed using the full installer I downloaded from avast.com. Still getting the same error message and have no network access.

Currently have avast uninstalled on both machines in order to use the network.

Vlk, are browser extension API's not integrated enough to make Script Shield work using WebRep plugin? Most other AV's use browser plugins for such tasks. That should be easier to maintain i think. But i could be wrong.

AIS: just updated manually from the UI (RC), no issue at all, rebooted, all works fine ;) ... at least the components that I use.

... just on a side note, I already removed the BS and the Script Shield yesterday from the RC, as they just don't scan anything. Could be that the BS would wake up after a while, but as usual the Script Shield won't ... in Chrome. Chrome being my default browser on win 8 ... oh yeah, I remember now that I even tested the Script Shield with IE10 in Win8 ... nothing was scanned either.

Alas, this upgrade went no better than v6 to v7 in February. At 1st I thought I was home free. The upgrade via the GUI went okay, and showed the new version number on the summary screen. But it never asked for a reboot. That made me suspect something was wrong. I rebooted, windows started fine, I logged on fine, and the system hung. Rebooted again, same thing. Rebooted into safe mode, uninstalled avast and rebooted, ran the uninstall tool and rebooted, ran Ccleaner, and then ran clean install of new version. Then my firewall began to act squirrely, like it did after the upgrade from v6. Another reboot, and it looked like it was all good. I ran a quick scan, during which none of my programs would respond. After the scan, I rebooted again. We'll see how things shake out the next few days.
Update: Twice today my system froze during (2) different processes. 1, this morning as I was running a System Explorer scan, it froze in the middle of the scan and locked the system, forcing a reboot. 2, system locked again tonite while Winpatrol was verifying my Startup list and scheduled tasks, which was odd because everything it kept throwing on the screen had already been set months ago, except for avast emergency update. The error message on the screen before being forced to reboot was that my firewall closed in an unexpected manner. When I go to Admin Tools and click on System event viewer log it says it is corrupt and cannot open.

Update: Switched to AVG, Sunday, after 3 days of system lock ups, unresponsive programs, etc. Call it a crisis of confidence.

AMD Athlon 3000+ 2.17 GHz, 1.50Gb ram, xp sp3, avast 7.0.1451 free, Privatefirewall7, Mbam free, SaS free, Winpatrol.

I am sure it has probably been covered somewhere, but for the first time a few days back I logged into the safe zone to try making a payment to my electric company. The payment went through, but I could not get my computer to print out a receipt confirmation. In fact, had to restart computer in order to clear the print window. What's up with that? Any plans to get that fixed?

Whilst this may be stating the obvious, but have you rebooted since the update ?

If so try it again. The Repair really is no big deal, if there happens to be any corruption or greater problem it may resolve that or give an error message indicating a reinstall is the next step. So it is also has a repair/advisory function.

The instruction at 0x7673ec2c referenced memory at 0x00000001. The
memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program
After the update I discovered I had Google Chrome installed;  I didn't see any box to untick to prevent this.  Grrrrrrrr!!!!!
BTW how do you add an image to a post?
When I used the attachment option it didn't show the attachment.

Traffic History screen still not showing anything on W8-RP.   I still think it is because IE10 on W8 comes with its own Flash file built in.

This is the message I get from Adobe when I try and install their latest version of Flash in IE
Quote
Your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser already includes Adobe Flash Player built-in. Windows Update will inform you when new versions of the Flash Player are available.

I have had this problem since upgrading from W8-CP to W8-RP which is when Microsoft added Flash to IE10

Mail Shield issue while sending with Gmail from thunderbird (on Win8) ... see screen shot. Reversing to normal smtp settings (StartTLS) "solves the problem :)

ps: no such issue when sending from iCloud, it's only with Gmail.

edit: meaning that when the settings (SMTP in Thunderbird) are what they have to be for the mail shield to run properly when sending from Gmail, Gmail doesn't appear as SMTP in the Mail Shield ssl accounts tab (no problem with IMAP), it's just not detected.

hi all

I've had avast free antivirus on my PC (vista 32 bit) for a 2-3 months and noticed that there was a program update available yesterday.

I upgraded as per instructions, rebooted, etc.

I'm afraid I can't remember what version I was coming from but it would have been a recent build, since I'd installed the latest version of Avast only about 2 months ago.

Anyway, unfortunately now, my outlook 2002 (SP3) client crashes every time on exit. Specifically, if I quit outlook, I get a Microsoft Windows pop-up stating that:

"Microsoft Outlook has stopped working"

Problem details:

Read our privacy statement:

I'm convinced that this is to do with the new version of Avast, as I've had no such errors prior to the update AND I know that the new avast build has a new outlook plugin in it.

I hope this crash can be resolved quickly, otherwise I will either have to revert to the previous version or use a different A/V product (which would be a shame).

Regards,

Gary

Win8 RC contains a newer embedded Flash player, which is not compatible with avast. We loaded this module, but it refuses to display our data. We'll look at it later, it wasn't so critical...

yeah Avast is probably looking for the Flash Player ActiveX files that you can't install on Win8 RP as IE10 has it already somewhere here C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash ... doesn't seem very different from the original location when the plugin was manually installed though ... not sure ...

edit: @pk ok so that's not a location issue, the module just wouldn't run with Avast thx.

edit again: can't you implement the animation through HTML5? ... just a question ...

I never looked into it until the Avast 7 update but it seems like with every update since then, there has only been two, that it causes a lot of people problems with their computer, has it always been this way?  Because I had trouble with Avast 7, although it wasn't a clean install, it was a very minor problem where the "Finish your upgrade" or whatever screen appeared every time.  It was fixed by changing a .ini file.

But now I see everytime there is an update about BSODs, people's internet not working and Avast just acting weird.  Has this always been a thing with updates and I just never noticed before?

160,000,000 Users . . .  This is the Support Forum so you're going to hear about mostly problems in here.
If it where a real problem, this forum would be unusable due to flooding.
There will always be incompatibilities or conflicts with some systems and programs and this is where you'll see the requests for help
or complaints.
I personally can't recall the last time I've had a real update problem on amy of my systems.  :)

Hardly surprising when monitoring a support forum, people without problem rarely if ever pay a visit. Then you have to balance that against the user base (and the variety of OSes and software installed) as Bob mentions.

During my custom install, I unchecked three shields I don't need (Email, P2P, and IM) and unchecked the second column that contains the Web Rep and Remote Assistance entries.

This is a bit idiotiq. Auto Sandbox is still spawning 3 popups for every test file that i download. If you click Continue executing in all 3 it adds 3 identical entries to the exclusion list. Fail much? Also 2 of the popups ALWAYS have runtime of 0:00, the third one actually is running.

And despite Igor convincing us that we are all wrong, Auto Sandbox identifies exactly nothing.

Upgraded from 1426 to this version manually i.e within Avast GUI checked for program updates on Win 7 64. Upgraded smooth & fine.

No other security software realtime installed. Only Windows FW & Avast.

Only 1 prob. During boot after entering password the screen goes black for app 8 secs. With previous version this was not happening.

Updated - Ok only 1st restart gave me that black screen. Further restart were fine. So the prob is solved here.

Just curious

Was anything done in this version to improve memory handling with regard to W8-RP?
Like I posted earlier, scans are faster and Firefox is dong a lot better job of not leaking memory since the update.

P.S. For Firefox beta users:

I hate that new "New Tab Thumbnail" feature in Firefox.  It sucks memory like Pacman eats up his opponents.   I replaced it with a Firefox addon about a week ago, "New Tab Homepage".  This also saves a lot of memory and keeps Firefox running fluidly even after a few hours of heavy browsing.  I highly recommend Firefox users take a look at it if they are finding they have a memory issue and are using a Firefox version with the "New Tab Thumbnails" feature

I don't know if it was mentioned but XP users get BSODs when this version meets trojans. I personally saw such crashes today when I upgraded Avast for my several friends. The crashes occured when I tried to open in Windows Explorer some USBs with files, infected by trojans. But if I first scanned the USBs and then deleted the infected files from the scan results, I could open them in Windows Explorer.

I installed v7.1451 and got the 10045 error and connection to the internet was not working.  It also caused my PC to slow down and twice crashed.  I uninstalled avast, and reinstalled ais v7.1421 (my prev working version) and voila!  Everything was back to normal.  Was the new program update fully tested before being released?  I probably would avoid program updates from now on...

I'm convinced that this is to do with the new version of Avast, as I've had no such errors prior to the update AND I know that the new avast build has a new outlook plugin in it.

I hope this crash can be resolved quickly, otherwise I will either have to revert to the previous version or use a different A/V product (which would be a shame).

Regards,

Gary

bump

Also, I have confirmed I upgraded from v7.0.1426.

Thanks for any help.

Is avast a *32 bit program? in task manager it looks like it is.. next to AvastUI.exe it has *32..

@Coolmario88 that's normal and it's always been like that, all Avast executables (at least those in *.exe) are 32 bit, just the drivers are 64 bit (on Win64)

Please send me latest minidump file, thanks.
Sorry but I can't. The friends went on holidays (to Egypt) and took their notebook with them.

Here's a report in the Russian sub-forum with the same situation: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100253.msg801025#msg801025   May be that user can upload his minidump?

pk, i'll ask the other way around, show me a user point of view identifications of malware samples inside Auto Sandbox. And also a case where Behavior Shield on its default Auto-Decide actually identifies AND blocks a malware sample. That will be easier if everyone at avast! Software are so confident about it...

@George Yves: it's not necessary, we found the problem.

@RejZoR: I think you already know how new autosandbox helps to monitor & identify malware, don't you? If not, let me know, I'll describe how it works. It's still under improvement, we waited quite a long time for this release - and for this new autosandbox. We have quite big expectations. As for behavior shield, it helps other avast components to identify hidden attackers and tell us which module/call is trusted and which doesn't. It would help me, if you can provide me some autosandboxed apps you have problem with, thanks.

pk, all i'd like to see is lets say 3 screenshots where Auto Sandbox displays a positive detection of a malware inside Auto Sandbox based on its behavior. A live malware sample, not some lab trigger. That's what i've been waiting for and never could actually witnessed on any system running avast!.
I know how components work and what to expect, it's the lack of expected stuff thats bugging me...

I know you roll things out very slowly but in general i hate antiviruses that are too passive. Meaning they do work but somehow you never get the wow effect...

AutoSandbox is still useless in my opinion. It's still incomplete and you can still can manage to skip malicious executables. If you download a piece of malware it's more likely to be detected by the antivirus engine and not after the AutoSandbox analysis. What's the point of having two databases? Also what is going to happen if the AutoSandbox catches something? 1: it will be deleted, 2: it would be available for others to download it as a virus definition or engine update. The same thing will happen just like with the real-time shields.

At least give us the option to run these files in the sandbox for a much longer period instead of killing the process after the analysis is done. Or even better, include a full Sandbox instead of AutoSandbox. That would be a luxury and will never happen unless a blue moon is out. I know the expectations are high for the AutoSandbox, but it's useless against malicious stuff, and gets in the way if you run legit software.

AutoSandbox is still useless in my opinion. It's still incomplete and you can still can manage to skip malicious executables.

Noone ever said that we can detect all existing malware. And if anybody ever tells you that... then they're lying for sure.
And if you're looking for such a silver bullet... sorry.

If you download a piece of malware it's more likely to be detected by the antivirus engine and not after the AutoSandbox analysis.

Yes, it is more likely - and that's correct, it should be that way, of course.
The AutoSandbox scan is slow - and works as a proactive detection, for samples that are not yet detected by the usual ways. Known samples should be detected in the usual way, not by AutoSandbox.

What's the point of having two databases?

It's called layered defense.
The databases are different, the scanning mechanisms are different. AutoSandbox performs dynamical analysis, while the usual detections are mainly static - so the detection [capabilities] are different.

Also what is going to happen if the AutoSandbox catches something? 1: it will be deleted, 2: it would be available for others to download it as a virus definition or engine update. The same thing will happen just like with the real-time shields.

Yes, the AutoSandbox detection will probably be turned into an ordinary detection. But before that happens, there will be some users protected by the AutoSandbox, who would be unprotected without it.

As long as the user doesn't click the button that executes the file outside the AutoSandbox. That's why the button is a security risk and we try to explain that to you guys. It will still fail to protect users in the current state, and we all know that. A full Sandbox is the ideal thing, but I guess free users will never get that, unless they pay for that.

Oh well, maybe in the future we will get that feature. So yeah guys grab Ollydbg, IDA, WireShark and a hex editor. I will analyse myself the files that doesn't have enough evidence until AutoSanbox gets tweaked and fixed up a little bit. We all know that AutoSandbox is immature. We made a lot of feedback about AutoSandbox, and I think guys that you should listen your customers.

Post by: igor on June 29, 2012, 10:26:49 PM
Sorry, but you obviously don't get the concept.
Suppose for a while that the autosandbox wasn't there at all - so you'd be saying "running an executable is a security risk, because we don't know (in advance) whether the file system shield will detect it" (and you might be right, but that doesn't really help).
With autosandbox, it's the same - you don't know whether the executable you are running will actually be autosandboxed, it might be started normally.
And when it actually is autosandboxed, it doesn't mean that it's bad in any way. When the autosandbox scan finds the file clean, then it offers the possibility to run the file normally - that's the logical conclusion. The initial decision (whether to autosandbox the file or not) is just a coarse pre-filter for the autosandbox scan - it will, and should, place also clean files there.
So I repeat what I've said previously - autosandbox has been turned into a scanning method (quite different from the other methods avast! uses) for executable files. Perhaps we should have renamed it, because "autosandbox" might be a bit confusing now. Something along the lines of "dynamic scan" would describe the feature better.

If you want every file you start to be run in a sandbox, then I suggest to get yourself a full/manual sandbox - avast's or other, doesn't matter. But that isn't an option for ordinary users, sandboxing every possible file isn't acceptable - you lose your work (that you might have done inside the sandboxed application), installers get broken, complex things simply don't work, etc.

We know all that. Well, at least i do. What i still question about this feature is the fact that i've never in the entire time of its existance seen it actually positively identify anything during these analysis inside sandbox. Never ever. Thats what we are questioning the entire time.
You say its effective, but we don't see it ever identify anything.

If something is effective, users will quickly see that. But if you never did, how can you know it really does anything? I've seen behavior analyzers, heuristics and all sorts of other tech from competitors. And they always worked as advertised. But your sandboxed analysis don't seem to work at all.
Just my observation.

XP, Avast free.
Since updating yesterday, i can't use my standard mail anymore.
Mail program reports SSL_connect error 38.
Temporary disabling Avast solves the problem, so Avast is the cause.
Nothing else but the Avast update changed, and ofcourse i rebooted after the update.

I've been using Avast free for ages now.
But i'm disappointed by Avast's need to take over any and all control over my pc by default (instead of leaving that to me) these days.
Autosandbox, webrep, stuff like that which is installed and activated without explaining and without the possibility to make a choice about it up front.

Autosandbox keeps annoying me so i diabled it.
Nevertheless it was active again after updating.

Please keep supporting and testing XP at least as long as M$ does.
And respect the settings of the user instead of overwriting them with standard values (or someone elses preference) upon updating.

I think there maybe a bug in the latest program update for AIS.
I have just updated on notification of program update, I allowed a reboot and was greeted with the following message :Avast  will not be able to protect mail/news (error 10045)  check avast Sec..exe is not blocked by firewall.

Right after the update and reboot the Avast real time monitor stopped functioning as well as the web shield and they cannot be restarted from within the gui. Nothing happens when I try "Fix Now".  Also, since the update and reboot my PC can no longer access the internet, and Internet Explorer crashes, there were no problems before the update. I have had to send this report via a Samsung  tablet via my internet connection, so no problem with that ! I am running Win 7 32 bit on my PC.  I hope someone can help me sort this out. I have just noticed that my Network Monitor widget is reporting my  external I P address as "Status 10045". I have tried disabling Avast, still no internet connection, nor when I stop the Avast firewall.

The problem with the autosandbox it's that it attempts to sandbox about 50% or more of the programs I run, which are all 100% completely safe, but still it closes them, it's incredibly annoying. I ended up disabling the autosandbox completely, it's just too disruptive.

That being said, I updated a couple more machines.
XP x64: updated from 1426, everything went just fine. No sandbox, but I believe that is by design. The problem with SUMo is still there, impossible to run it with the shields active, a process called "sf.bin" keeps opening and closing and the app doesn't work. Disabling the shields makes SUMo work perfectly again. AFAIK this ONLY happens on XP64. Probably related to the non-existing sandbox.

win7 x86: updated via the GUI from v1426, rebooted and again, no "additional protection" tab, it disappeared. Once again, had to uninstall, reboot and re-install to get everything working fine again.

bye!

Try putting a check mark in "Use fast checksums" in the Firewall's expert settings. Others have reported that this fixes connectivity issues.

I have it set to "ask', still, it prompts me to sandbox just too many progs, that's why I ended up disabling it altogether...It can't be right that the sandbox finds about 80% of programs "unsafe", whatever the reason.

More likely to be your firewall (which is ?) blocking the new changed components of avast, namely avastSvc.exe, which requires internet access or the web shield and mail shield won't be able to connect (effectively blocking internet connection).

I have been following along but I must have missed the discussion of auto-sandbox and program installations. Does the auto-sandbox scan the program installation process?  If it does does, does it sandbox or halt the installation process if it finds a threat or potential threat during the installation process?  Or is all of this done by the "File Shield" and/or "Behavior Shield?"

Hi Petr Matrix

Thank you for the reply.

This is very disappointing news that Outlook 2002 is not supported. I have looked on the website and could not find any information saying this though. Perhaps this should be stated for the benefits of customers?

Also, the Mail Shield does 'appear' to work in build 7.0.1426 - I have multiple email accounts, including 2 which use SSL and Avast 7 appears to scan emails (the mail shield counter increases, etc).

When you say that Avast does not support Outlook 2002, in what way does it not work?

Thanks,

Gary

Updated via update option through Avast UI. Upon restart, no internet. This happened with the last time I tried updating the program through Avast UI as well. For whatever reason, Avast will break the internet for me unless I do a clean install. Will try to do clean install now and hopefully everything will work.

Is anyone out here with Windows XP (32-bit) SP3 OS? Couple of minutes ago i updated my Avast Free Edition into the new program update? It updates successfully and instructed to restart the computer so I restarted? Everything went well after that not until i faced a weird and annoying problem. It can't even open up Outlook Express, can't open up IE and Google Chrome, and even some of other programs! At last but not least Computer can't even up re-start up after restarting same thing applies to shutting down? Can't even shut it down? This problem didn't appear before I applied the new program update 7.0.1451

Is Avast blocking something or somehow something isn't working properly? Or is it the computer problem?

More likely to be your firewall (which is ?) blocking the new changed components of avast, namely avastSvc.exe, which requires internet access or the web shield and mail shield won't be able to connect (effectively blocking internet connection).

I have Windows Firewall?

The problem with the autosandbox it's that it attempts to sandbox about 50% or more of the programs I run, which are all 100% completely safe, but still it closes them, it's incredibly annoying. I ended up disabling the autosandbox completely, it's just too disruptive.
Just set the auto-sandbox to Ask instead of Auto. Then you will have the option to run a file normally which will add it to the sandbox exclusions and that file will never be questioned again.

I have it set to "ask', still, it prompts me to sandbox just too many progs, that's why I ended up disabling it altogether...It can't be right that the sandbox finds about 80% of programs "unsafe", whatever the reason.
You must be using a lot of obscure things then. Mine has only wanted to sandbox a few things in the past but those same things, IMGBurn for example, are not detected any more even without having an exclusion.

I just upgraded the free version on the Vista machine. I did it through the GUI and it was kind of wonky with much slower boot times and IE9 not opening until I disabled all the Shields. After IE did open , I enabled the shields and it worked but then CCleaner would not open until I disabled the shields again. The machine still had the old Alwil Software directory structure so I decided to do a full clean reinstall. After a clean install, bootup is still slower than before but everything opens properly. The emergency updater task , however does not show anywhere. Not in CCleaner, Autoruns, or even the Vista Task Scheduler. I don't think it was ever created.

Hi everyone,

Same problem as StaticGuy here, with Win XP SP3 Home Edition.
At first start, everything seems to load correctly, then WinPatrol warns me about "new" IE helpers and add-ons, that have been installed for ages (it starts with Avast WebRep interestingly).
Then, font display is corrupted in the task bar, icons appear and disappear when browsed on and off

EDIT:
Not quite sure what happened here...? My problem seems to have fix itself without any intervention from me, except a 5th or 6th reboot in Safe Mode. It's been 15min and everything looks fine.
I took the opportunity to check "load Avast services after system services" in the Settings section. Don't know if it will help in anyway, actually...

Will keep you in the loop if anything changes

Hello -- running Windows 7 x64 Sp1, all updates.  Clean install of 7.0.1451 from File Hippo.  WebRep appears to be half-working.  With IE9, if I go to a web site, the green bars are there, below the URL, just as they should be.  However, if I use Google or Bing to search for anything, I get the search results but absolutely no sign of WebRep -- no site ratings.

The windows XP firewall has zero outbound protection, so shouldn't be causing this effect.

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

If that doesn't work it would be better for you to create your own new topic, so we can help or your problem could get lost and confuse this notification topic.

When you select "Run normally" and then check the box to remember that answer, you're creating a whitelist.

1451 brings two problems on my machine.

As far as I have noticed until now:

1) I had my firewall settings set to Home/ Low Risk Zone and found the settings suddenly at Public/ High Risk Zone

2) It switches randomly into Safezone, opening up from 5 to 20 browser sessions on Safezone Startup.

2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

And again my XP computer hangs at the desktop after update and reboot.
Had to boot into safe mode to uninstall avast!

As "usual" I hope an uninstall and then a fresh install will fix this (of course I have to set up all options again too, and register)
But I cannot imagine why is should be so hard to do an update without messing up.

This happend every time the avast program is updated :-(

Merci !

You must be using a lot of obscure things then. Mine has only wanted to sandbox a few things in the past but those same things, IMGBurn for example, are not detected any more even without having an exclusion.

No, not obscure at all. Examples: the winrar installer, the seamonkey installer (more precisely,a temp process it starts), several games, codestuff starter, Teracopy, wordzap, a utility called "zipmax", trojan remover (for god's sake!!! avast shouldn't interfere with malware removal, it should help!), SUMo, doomsday, stella atari 2600 emu, finalburn x64, micro64 (c64 emu), ultimate bruce lee (a bruce lee remake),etc, etc, etc.

I will give you starter, because it can mess up system services or start-up items. But of the rest, NONE of them is even remotely dangerous... I really would like to know who or what sets the criteria for sandboxing progs.

PLEASE tell me why are this programs so "DANGEROUS" to my system? Or why is their "reputation" or "prevalence" so low. Who or what  the hell determines a file's "reputation" or "prevalence"? it seems completely arbitrary to me...

I believe the words are "may be dangerous" and therefore are requested to be run sandboxed.
Most of us don't run so many obscure programs. You apparently do.
I found "zipmax" on fileforum going back to 2005 - I would consider that obscure.  :D

Thanks,

Gary

Hi gazzawazza,
it is a small misunderstanding. Avast and its mail shield supports all versions of outllooks, but only avast! addin for outlook (and its options in mail shield at section MS Outlook only) is supported in outlook 2003 and newer. If you are not connected to an exchange server with outlook 2002, you have no problem and you are full protected.

I believe the words are "may be dangerous" and therefore are requested to be run sandboxed.
Most of us don't run so many obscure programs. You apparently do.
I found "zipmax" on fileforum going back to 2005 - I would consider that obscure.  :D

C'mon, these are not obscure!!!! please!

I have a similar problem.  I restared after upgrading, and now 3 of my shields are disabled, and I can't bring them back online; FileSystem Shield, IM Shield, and P2P Shield...they were running fine before...don't understand what happened...

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Many thanks.  I'll do this as soon as I get home

Crap! Again, clean install on freshly installed OS (win7 64), and NO "additional protection" tab.
Installed twice, same result...
Had to install a third time to get it right. It seems that un-selecting the "components" checkbox during installation causes the tab not to show. This didn't happen in previous versions, I ALWAYS installed with that checkbox deselected and never saw this issue before.
I hope it can be fixed soon along with the outlook problem and that a new version will be released very soon.
(this kind of bugs should've been detected in the beta stage)

Not sure if others experienced this, but I had a nasty experience with this update via the in-program updater from 7.0.1426.  This was on another laptop that ran Windows 7 x64 with no show-stopping issues before.  Upon rebooting for the update I received a black screen with only the mouse cursor visible after the Windows 7 "Welcome screen".  Had to do a manual shutdown--rebooting again only brought me to the same black screen every time.

After doing a clean install this problem was fixed but this was very odd given previous smooth updates with Avast.  I did the exact same procedure with this update on another PC running Windows XP SP3 x86 and had no problems though.  Could this be an issue isolated to Windows 7 x64?

I have noticed this bug too with my recent clean install--thought that was intentional though, guess not!  I noticed checking at least one of the other options under components will resolve this.  Not sure if removing that piece afterwards via "Add/Remove Programs" in Windows will completely remove the "Additional Protection" tab again though.

This is caused by changing environment-path "Tmp" to another drive. You have to change "Tmp" path to the drive which avast installed.

In which avast! version are you trying to restore settings? In 7.0.1451, this should be fixed.

It's 7.0.1426. I had to revert because of the memory leak described in http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100359.0

...of course I have to set up all options again too...

And that seems to be what Lars-Erik is trying to do also. So he's lucky if he didn't have to change his TMP-directory.

@gazzawazza: please turn off self-protection (Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Enable avast! self-defense module), download & replace these files in your avast program folder:
  • http://public.avast.com/~kurtin/AsOutExt64.dll (in case you have x64 OS outlook 2010 64-bit)
Please let me know if it helps. Thanks!

from avast! 7, supported outlooks are outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010
however, it couldn't crash, I look at it next week

Hi Petr Matrix

Thank you for the reply.

This is very disappointing news that Outlook 2002 is not supported. I have looked on the website and could not find any information saying this though. Perhaps this should be stated for the benefits of customers?

Also, the Mail Shield does 'appear' to work in build 7.0.1426 - I have multiple email accounts, including 2 which use SSL and Avast 7 appears to scan emails (the mail shield counter increases, etc).

When you say that Avast does not support Outlook 2002, in what way does it not work?

Thanks,

Hi Petr...

Ahhhhhhh.... that's great news... and since the plugin was not supported by my outlook client, I did not know there was one, so have not missed it lol  ;D

We just need to fix the outlook crash on exit and all will be fine again  ;)

Thank you.

Hi All

I'm new to the forum and reading through this thread over the past 12 or so hours I notice problems with email (among others). I've used Avast! for around 12 months now, licensed Pro version, and it has worked fine until yesterdays update. Since then I haven't been able to retrieve any mail at all unless I turn off the 'Mail Shield' - 'Scan inbound messages' option.

My client, Pegasus Mail, connects to the Mail server but then retrieves nothing with the mail staying on the mail server and the server closing the connection.

I have posted a 'request support ticket' with the AVAST Tech support team but had nothing back yet.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Ron

Glad it is working for you.  Right now I have all my shields disabled so I can get some backups and syncs finished.  Not good.  Will try to start turning shields on one at a time to narrow down which one is causing the problem later today.  By the time I got the problem figured out, I could not get any screen prints, and even Ctrl+Alt+Delete would not work, so I just turned shields off after reboot.  Am following http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100359.0 mentioned above, as it describes my system symptoms very well.

Two questions on the Outlook plugin (I have Outlook 2003)
- can the plugin be disabled/removed?
- if the plugin cannot be removed, how can I move the toolbar and have it "stick?"  It currently adds a third line in my Outlook window.  I move it up and to the right, so that it abuts another toolbar on the line above.  However, when I close and restart Outlook, the toolbar moves back to the third line.  Bugs me!

Thanks.

Update:

By all accounts this is only present in win2k/winXP and I'm told the bug is fixed (and relates to rename operations). Now I don't know if that fix, means an internal program build awaiting release, I have asked that and awaiting confirmation.

I'm having the same problem with two computers that are using Win XP SP3. Some text turns black, images and text disappear when scrolling over them (for example, in the start menu), and a bunch of error messages pop up. The only temporary fix I have found is just to reboot my computer and just wait until it starts happening again. Hope they fix this soon.

With all the gazillion XP updates since it was released it makes a bit harder to identify a problem on one XP system that doesn't exist on another.   By now there have probably been more more GB of updates than there were in the first XP RTM OS. ;D

Very smooth update via GUI from 1426 to 1451.
No issues at all on XP SP3 Professional. :)

Well, this is something. After upgrading to 1451 via GUI all seemed fine but after awhile and a couple of reboots using my PC I began noticing slow down and hanging of programs. Then error messages previousl stated by XP users. ie> Insufficient Resources errror message. Runtime error message and finally my PC no longer would load programs on Boot up.
SO, I uninstalled 1451 and also ran Clean Utility. THen a Cleam installed of AIS 1426 via my original Execution File while disconnected to the internet.
Once 1426 was install (without Reboot) and welcome message completed all seemed back to normal. I used my PC for about an hour and then shutdown.
Came back to Reboot and found this Error message on Blue Screen:

" A problem was detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage.
IRQL_Not_Less_or_EQUAL

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x65830845, 0x000000FF,0x00000001,0x8052D781)

I have uninstalled AIS 1426 via Safe Mode and also ran CLean Utility in safe mode.
I have even run THe Clean Utility for all AIS versions.
Something from Avast (probably a ADriver) I think but am not sure??is not removed. I really don't know. :-\

This is something I simply can't resolve and would greatly appreciate any direction from Evangelist's with XP operating sytem.

Is there a Driver or File (Remnant) that may be known to cause this problem.
At this point I am on a work computer and am feeling pretty stressed. :P

I have not and still can not boot into "NORMAL BOOT" and continue to receive Blue Screen error message ???
Please, :) any direction so as to avoid more serious measures

Same problem here - PC will eventually crash with an 'out of resources' issue.  Clean install, fully patched, of XP.

You are given the choice to install Chrome or not at the very end of the process. It's down at the bottom of the window so I guess you didn't see it. The installation is checked off by default and you have to deselect it but the option is there.

1. Always choose custom install regardless of who's program you install.
2. Uncheck any unwanted add-ons

Depends entirely on how tidy you keep your system. That however, doesn't amount to a hill of beans, when the bug relating to rename operations in w2k and winXP.

To be brief, it's a bug in the WebRep plugin. Disable that and remove it from your browser and the Safe Zone problem disappears.

Yeah, Avast just sent me a pop-up box that told me to upgrade my program on my other computer. I trustingly (stupidly) did it. It downloaded, but it is now "completing the upgrade" with the additional advisory that "this may take a while."

So far, it is cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking, and cranking...

I never agreed to be a beta tester. If this just keeps cranking, I'm locked out of my main computer. It looks I'm going to have to uninstall the whole mess.

I am VERY disappointed in Avast for conning me into testing something I never agrees to test. Bad form. Very bad form.  >:( >:( >:(

Nearly same here with Win 7 64 bit after computer has just started.
The green popup is shown and the sound starts twice: "Ping - Ping - Die Virendatenbank wurde aktualisiert." (german version of AVAST VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED)

I use Win7 64 bit and Opera 12 64 bit.

After updating to 1451 from 1447 I had to re-register AVAST.  This problem I had since version 1443.

WebRep for Opera doesn't work. I cannot install it from GUI.
I think I know why. AVAST! WebRep doesn't work with Opera 64 bit.
I copied local appdata from
c:\Users\*my User*\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera x64\
to
c:\Users\*my User*\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\
Then I could install WebRep for Opera from GUI. Using WebRep was not able because Opera uses local Appdate in widgets directory 'Opera x64'.
I copied WebRep install data into the 'Opera x64' widgets directory. Opera ignored the plugin and after closing Opera it was deleted.

On second computer with WinXP and Opera 12 I have non of this problems.

I have uninstalled 7.0.1426 on two of three computer so far today. I restart then run aswclear then restart and run ccleaner then restart and run registry cleaner of ccleaner then restart before installing 7.0.1451, Pro version. On the computer with windows 8 RP I get this under AswAr log

avast! Antirootkit, version 1.0
Scan started: Monday, July 2, 2012 3:44:19 AM

File initialize error A0000101

Scan finished: Monday, July 2, 2012 3:44:20 AM
Hidden files found: 0
Hidden registry items found: 0
Hidden processes found: 0
Hidden services found: 0
Hidden boot sectors found: 0

I reported this before but got no answer, I guess this is still just a problem with windows 8, so not to worried about it, just wanted to report it.

On the computer with windows 7 I noticed when you start to install 7.0.1451 a file shows up in the recycle bin, I did the install twice to be sure, it is
 C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast
With all I did I know I was doing a clean install, just was wondering why it did this, does not seem to be a problem just seems a little strange.

Also the link for the pro download at the beginning of this thread would not work for me, would make internet explorer stop working on both computer so went to avast homepage and downloads and downloaded from there with no problem. Did a full scan and bootscan on windows 8 and no problem. Going to finish up on the other two, sly

I did a fresh custom install and everything seems to be working except for one problem. There is no "Additional Protection" bar in the GUI.

During my custom install, I unchecked three shields I don't need (Email, P2P, and IM) and unchecked the second column that contains the Web Rep and Remote Assistance entries.

Hi, please could you send  file c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup\Components.ini to vanek@avast.com

I am using avast! 1.7.0 Professional Edition on a Windows 7 SP1 x64 environment. Up until three days ago, I have had no problems and avast! was working perfectly. Then, on June 29th on the U.S. side of the dateline, avast! requested an update to program version 1.7.0.1451. Immediately after that update was completed, my web browser could not connect to my provider, and my E-mail client could no longer connect to its mail server.  The problem was caused by a conflict with Online Armor Premium Edition, Version 5.5.0 (a product that, by the way, co-existed with avast! before the update to version 1.7.0.1451).  The fix is to go into Online Armor's "Options" menu, then click on the "Exclusions" tab and add the avast! program folder.  This inhibits Online Armor from bumping into avast!, and so avoids the conflict.  You may want to publish this warning in case someone else using the same software combination suffers the same problem.

Now, I've discovered another problem that occurred after one of the automatic updates.  I found that my web browser (Mozilla Firefox Version 13.1) hung as soon as it engaged a Java script. Ironically, the problem isn't with the Script shield, but with the Behavioral shield (I proved it by getting the browser to work correctly with the shield off and scripts enabled, and with the shield on and scripts disabled. However, it won't work with both scripts and Behavioral shield enabled). Thus, I've now had to turn off the Behavioral Shield and reduce some of avast!'s protection.  I opened a ticket for both problems a couple of days ago but have received no real help.  Considering that I paid for the Professional Edition of avast!, I am very disappointed.....

Everything seemed fine until an auto update Jun30 when outgoing email stopped.  After considerable digging, I found out that disabling the outgoing email scan enabled email to go out.  Am using Win 7 Pro, Thunderbird 13.0.1 with standard port settings (no SSL), AVAST free.  The ISP informed me Jul 1 that three other AVAST FREE customers had the same problem occur after the Saturday night's change, whatever it was.  I tried using Win Live email instead of Thunderbird, same blockage.  Finagling the ports in Thunderbird did nothing to improve the situation.

Hi,
Also compared new version against previous version on my laptop WINDOWS XP SP3. Swapfile commit charge increasing in new version. On previous version Avast consumes less resourses and the laptop is much faster running. Gone back to previous version for now was happy with that. Don't know if it is a problem with other operating systems newer than xp? Or is avast heading to be better on windows 7 onwards as my laptop is very old spec and still very reliable.

I had the exact same problem today. I installed the new version through the Avast Internet Security program and it blocked the internet AND messed up the Avast program. It says it was not started, tried to start it, would not start at all. Could not repair or change as no internet connection. Kept popping up in Safe Browser and wanted me to use Google Chrome. I do NOT use Google Chrome as I use Firefox and will not change. Upset with everything I just uninstalled it all and now am using Microsoft Essentials and my Firewall. I am on Windows XP Home Edition. Why do they constantly have to force us to use other things on OUR computers? I paid their fee for the service so should be MY decision on what browser I use...and it is! So goodbye Avast...it was a good run while it lasted.

I had an issue with this version. Friday, I installed the version on my HP Notebook, running Windows 8 Release Preview 64-bit. But when I restarted the PC, after the login, it froze!! I had to reinstall Windows. After reinstalling the O.S., I intalled Avast (fresh installation, of course) and the same thing happened.
On my notebook with Win 8 CP 32-bit, no problems. Is there any issues with this version of Avast, with 64-bit O.S.
What could have happened?

I know that I don't have a virus or anything because I did a complete system scan with Avast, Ad Aware & Spybot. Everything came up clean except for a few tracking cookies. 2.) Do you have to install Web-Rep to have Site Correct?

The phishing filter works without WebRep but it is an email filter and not a browsing one. SiteCorrect requires the WebRep plugin to be installed and activated. If Google is your default search provider and you have the suggestions turned on, you do not need SiteCorrect at all.

I have installed (NOT upgraded via the internal updater) build 1451 over the top of build 1426 on 2 XP Pro SP3 machines to day. They both had existing Avast Pro on them. In both cases, the installer considered the installations as totallynew installs. Settings were NOT maintained and even the license had to be inserted on both PCs. Installed through the GUI on Windows XP.  Seems to be fine.  Two questions:

1.) Do you have to install Web Rep to install the Phishing Filter? (How do you know if you have Site Correct installed?)

2.) Do you have to install Web-Rep to have Site Correct?

Jack
The phishing filter works without WebRep but it is an email filter and not a browsing one. SiteCorrect requires the WebRep plugin to be installed and activated. If Google is your default search provider and you have the suggestions turned on, you do not need SiteCorrect at all.

Thanks!  Wow, did not know that Phishing Filter was an e-mail filter only.  (Or do you have to install Webrep for the Phishing Filter to be a browsing filter?)  Now with Phishing Filter as an email filter, will that help if I have a web-based e-mail like Yahoo Mail? (Which I do.)  But I don't have Web Rep installed.

I think the program update release was a bit premature but oh well...

My system wxphome sp3 or 4 whatever is the latest.  avast free 7.0.1451

I installed the latest update on my PC on Friday night. Now my whole system is running really slow.  It takes Google forever to launch.  I keep getting messages stating that my subscription has expired, when it still has 18 months left.  When I reboot it resets itself.    Also having problems with Safezone. Everything was OK until I updated.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if the Phishing filter will work with a web based email if you access it through it's web page. I do know that it works with email clients that are set up to retrieve email from web based accounts. It works for me in getting my mail with Windows Mail from GMX, Gmail, and Hotmail.

Yes I am using Windows Mail in Win 7. There is a way to make it work. You just have to paste in the right .dll from Vista.

I think I have to find an other program now.

And that after years of using avast.

And on the top:

Installation of spyware.

Installation of browser plug-ins without asking for allowance.

Def this newer program update is causing slowdowns on Windows XP sp3, Rather bad as more and more tweaking it will get more and more embedded into the operating system and will cripple it.? I Don't want this to get like NORTON SYMANTEC!!!

& i know that it is consuming more resourses than the previous version. Swapfile commit charge increasing the longer the computer is running (memory leaks) compared with previous version on my laptop under test. Will try a new beta version later. Back on previous version downloaded from file hippo

I had IE freezing, telling me it had reset my search provider to BING!  UGGHHH.  I had to ininstall, go into Safe Mode with the Avast Uninstall Utility.  I ran the Uninstaller, and on Reboot, went back to Avast 7.0.1426.

I also set Program Updates to MANUAL in settings, and will ONLY be doing program updates maybe once a year tops, by coming to the forum and making sure that new versions are going to be working OK on my old Windows XP (SP-3) system before installing them.  These program update notifications that only used to go out after the program was ready for prime time, are now being rolled out too fast.

Hi,

just installed latest version 2 days ago and my firewall setting were reset.  What the hell is happening with Avast???  Use to be a very nice anti-virus program, now update are more a pain than anything else.  I am using Pro version on my desktop and one of my client has enterprise version and I have problem with both.  Update that screw up the settings, install update when they are not supose to.  I am very tired of debugging problem and finding out its Avast that is the cause of everything.

After my subscription is over I am moving to another product.  I am a reseller and I wont sell this product anymore.

Well, this is something. After upgrading to 1451 via GUI all seemed fine but after awhile and a couple of reboots using my PC I began noticing slow down and hanging of programs. Then error messages previousl stated by XP users. ie> Insufficient Resources errror message.

Same problem here - PC will eventually crash with an 'out of resources' issue.  Clean install, fully patched, of XP.

Phil

Same problem here as well - fully patched XP Pro, stock Dell Vostro 420.  After running 1451 (either scheduled or manually) PC will eventually crash with 'out of resources' issue.

PS.  After the uninstall and rollback my Google Search was as it was originally.  To be honest, if it comes time for a new computer and if it has MSE already on it, sadly I would be tempted to keep using it.  And this from a loyal Avast user of about seven years!

This problem only seems to be affecting Win XP. Others with Win 7 aren't having any problems at all - at least not with any memory leaks. So if you upgrade to new computer with Win 7 or 8 there will be no need to change from Avast. MS SE is not only unreliable and not very good at catching viruses, it also acts as spyware tracking you all over the internet.
When I get another new computer, if it's got Widows 7 then I'll be reinstalling this version 7.0.1451 of Avast Free.  As stated elsewhere I'm currently using AVG 1012 Free until this issue with XP is worked out.

I have no intentions of upgrading to Windows 7 or 8. I like XP Pro. It works & I rarely have any problems with it. I tried Windows 7 & I don't like it. I just want my computer to work like it did before I foolishly installed a beta without realizing it was a beta.

I believe Avast acted irresponsibly and unprofessionally toward Windows XP users with this release.  Sad to say, because what happened to the 3-6 months of making sure the update was good before the new version toaster notice came out?  That amount of time is what Avast used to have.  Customers thought that wasn't enough, so now Avast is pushing out the updates too fast.  I don't like having to set the Program Updates to manual, but I had no choice after this release.

I also think that because Windows XP is becoming more and more obsolete, Avast is doing much LESS testing than in the past on Windows XP systems.  Millions of people are struggling in harsh economic times, and can't afford to purchase a new computer.  Tons of business are moving to "push out and release the new and cool" with lesser regards to quality control in testing than in the past, and that's what's causing problems on legacy systems.

Ha. YES!
There is a lot of people out there that use older computers like me. Windows Xp is easy to use and i have no bother with it untill i tried this new update.

I have used a computer with windows 7 and is horrible don't like the windows display layout although you can set the layout to classic view.
I am on the previous version and if any one needs to get the previous version setup file go to places like (file hippo) & roll back avast. I will try another beta version later on my other test computer & if that is stable will go to that. BUT Not re updating now untill more tweaks of avast is done. Avast needs more info why it is slowing xp. More BSOD Mini dumps need to be send to them for inspection.
AVAST IS STILL THE BEST ANTIVIRUS FREE. I have used Norton/Symantec and AVG and they have let viruses in!! when i used windows 95 and 98 many years ago

It isn't a program (version) related issue, when you experience that symptom it is more likely to be a webrep server related issue.

The latest update has crashed my PC - WinXP says welcome and diplays the wallpaper but never displays the desktop and will not shutdown via cntl-alt-delete. All the processes are shown as running, but explorer is not doing its job and cannot be shutdown.

Booted in SafeMode, uninstalled Avast, now boots OK except complains about aswRegSvr.exe being absent. Ran msconfig and unticked anything Avast, now reboots cleanly. I switched to Avast some years ago when AVG did this to my laptop, looks like ZoneAlarm are in for a surge of downloads.

Bad release it seems.

I'm running 7.0.1426 on several XP Pro systems, with AutoSandbox disabled, because I just couldn't get it to boot consistently.  Right now all is cool and Sandboxie is being used for the un-trusted/questionably sites/downloads.

After reading the previous 20 pages of this thread, I wouldn't touch this release with a 10' pole.  So, I can't really "add" anything to the conversion here.  My question, for those who know more than I do, is simply "Should I simply turn off notification of new Avast versions, and never update the program again on XP?"  Does anyone think they will EVER fix this stuff?

I have updated from the GUI every time since I started using Avast shortly after V5 came out. No problems at all on Win 7, Vista, or XP. My XP machine was updated from 1426 and is also running perfectly with 1451 and experiencing none of the problems being reported by other XP users. The problems are not universal and therefore much harder to track down.

For those who are having the problem it appears to make itself known relatively quickly. I leave my system on about 16 hrs a day and I don't experience this issue and I don't know why there would be a difference across those XP users.

Update from 7.0.1451 avastUI, Maintenance, Update, Program Update, no problems so far XP Pro SP3 (spoke too soon).

Even after the update and reboot, I have just jot a toaster popup of an update, it is essentially out of date as it reports More information about version 7.0.1451, the version I had.

No links it is an update through the UI, that said presumably the links in post one of this topic would give the latest version (?).

Updated a few minutes ago to the last version.

The SSL mail problem i reported earlier is now gone.
Thanks for that.
The lag i was attended to by this thread (didn't tie that to Avast yet) will be proven to be fixed (or not) over the next few days.

XP pro (Dutch), up to date and all my systems (different platforms) are always on.

You shouldn't actually need a link (but Gopher John has given you a direct link) as you should be able to do a manual program update from the avastUI, Maintenance, Updates.

Thanks,

PS has anyone else replicated my outlook crash on exit?

If not, should I try a clean install? If so, what is the best way to do full uninstall + install? In safe mode? Is there a uninstall tool to clean all application fragments?

Regards,

Gary

Hi PK and Petr

My outlook crashing on exit, I guess, must have been some weird update glitch.

My process:

- I uninstalled v7.0.1451 in safe mode
- I think I was prompted to reboot
- I then ran the avast cleaner in safe mode
- rebooted
- installed 7.0.1451 directly in normal user mode (choosing NOT to install 1) the browser SiteRep component 2) I think the outlook plugin, as I know it doesn't work in Outlook 2002)

Outlook doesn't crash on exit now.

I'll try updating again, as 7.0.1456 has been released, and see if Avast behaves itself.

Regards,

Gary

I got the update installed but was still having problems. I turned off the behavior shields & it got better but I'm still having problems. The computer starts better but I'm still having problems getting on the internet. Sometimes Firefox loads but gets hung up & never really connects. I usually end up having to restart my computer several times which is really annoying. I don't do instant messaging or P2P, so I've turned those shields off. I don't know what other shields I can turn off to make my internet work better. I'm getting ready to uninstall Avast & download & install AVG. Avast used to be very good, but this latest update is the pits. I wish I had realized that it was a beta when I installed it. If I had, I never would have installed it. Does anybody know where I can get the previous version?

I uninstalled Avast & can't get it to reinstall. AdAware has antivirus now too, but I don't know how good it is. What I do know is that since I uninstalled Avast my system is running a whole lot better. Does anyone have the link to go back to Avast 6? I never should have installed Avast 7.
Title: Re: Program update 7.0.1451

Personally I wouldn't use AdAware (not just because it now has an AV and is likely to conflict with avast), but because I don't think it is a top program as it was many years ago.

Why can't you reinstall it, what errors are displayed, etc. ?

It would be best to continue this in a new topic of your own (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 'new topic' button) as it is likely to get buried in this huge topic and make it even more confused than it already is. Answer the questions in the new topic and we will try and help.

But I don't know how good it is.
They've improved a lot the detection and the technology. There were tests on AV Comparatives that set them at the top (proactive detection). But their site is being worked on and, right now, I cannot find the test link.

David R, what do you use to find adware on your computer? I've been using AdAware for a long time, but if there's something better that's still free, I'll use it. I also use Spybot to find spyware on my computer. I usually pick a day once a week & run Avast, AdAware & Spybot to keep my system clean.

I just do a Malwarebytes scan once in a while. I actually can't remember the last time I scanned with Avast. I don't use anything else.

FLABirder - Malwarebytes is the best thing to run alongside avast, many of us here use this combination and SuperAntiSpyware is also highly recommended, note that only one of these programs should be run in realtime with avast if you have the pro versions.

Craigb, I run the free versions of everything except Zone Alarm Pro. It seems that when Avast put these updates together, they didn't consider those of us who are still running Windows XP sp3. They seem ot be made for Windows 7 & 8 & I don't intend to spend a fortune on either of those programs. XP Pro works just fine for me.

The earlyer update that you had 7.0.1451 had some issues but that is to be expected on beta's, the current stable version 7.0.1456 is fine.

Both of the programs i mentioned are free, you only have to pay if you want the Pro versions for realtime scanning.

You can see my signature in my posts, I use MBAM as a secondary anti-malware scanner on on occasions run an SAS on-demand scan. I have had both for some considerable time and neither have found anything, but I don't really expect them to.

You will also see in my signature that I also use XP Pro SP3 and no issues, so it isn't an issue across all XP systems.

You didn't answer the question in my last post as to why you can't install avast again (e.g. what errors do you get) ?

Program version updates and virus updates are not happening automatically. I have tried downloading manual definitions following instructions found on the forum ("VPS") but although they download they won't install. My program version is 7.0.1451 and I cannot find how to update this manually. Please someone provide very basic instructions!

Have you tried running a repair of avast via remove programs/programs and features ? if that doesn't work I'd suggest re-installing with the latest stable version of avast 7.0.1474 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=108170.0

* Outlook plugin redesign
* Opera support in WebRep
* SiteCorrect module for the detection of unwanted websites
* Windows 8 compatibility updates
* Emergency Updater

Download locations:
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved). Also, you can use build-in updater.

thanks for your feedback during beta testing!

Pavel

I've clicked and downloaded the up-to-date version of Avast FREE.

And the downloaded file is 7.0.1474.773

Nearly, the current release latest version is 7.0.1474. The .773 at the end of the versions posted by Dennis.Gonzales I think relates to the VPS in the download, but isn't crucial on the actual build/version number 7.0.1474.
