Title: Unable to get rid of malware - Constant Avast alert pop-up
Post by: partisana on July 03, 2012, 12:59:13 AM
Hello,
3 days ago my PC got infected with  sirefef.y / sirefef.b
After serveral rounds of cleaning tools (CCCleaner, Spybot and Malwarebytes included), there's still something wrong, as I still constantly get an Avast pop-up alerting me about malware detected. (Besides that, my Windows firewall and Windows Update have dissapeard. I have installed Comodo firewall instead). However, I have just run a new Malwarebytes report and the result is clean. A quick Avast check also says there is nothing wrong. But the truth is the Virus Vault is packed with this malicious thing and I have no clue on what to do. I delete it and it grows back again!
I am attaching the OTL and the aswMBR.exe files.
Hope you can help me.
thxs in advance

What file is Avast reporting

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_disclaimer_ENG.png)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png)

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hello,
I have followed your instructions and, voila!, everything seems back to normal =) No Avast pop-ups yet ant the Virus Valut remains clean after some minutes using the net.
I am attaching the 2 resulting logs.
My Windows Firewall has also been restored. I am wondering... what should I do now? Keep Comodo and MS activated? Isn't it a bit too much?
Windows Update also seems to be back on track.
Let me know if there is anything else I need to do.
Really appreciate your help with this mess.
cheers

OK here is a lot more there that needs to be removed I will try first with combofix, but that may fail..  Do you have your windows CD so that we can use the recovery console ?

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
Quote
File::
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.59F5210B992624CB
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.8C107346C3B3529F
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.71BEAB5DE7312F27
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.E727CF79D2EBDE0D
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.135C9548117C4245
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.688F49408E9C7DC1
c:\windows\system32\services.exe.3CDF21FB3BB11987
c:\windows\system32\drivers\rsbhagvf.sys

Folder::
C:\Windows\Installer\{0e7e658c-01b8-b404-ce34-0bed7c780ec3}
C:\Users\susan\AppData\Local\{0e7e658c-01b8-b404-ce34-0bed7c780ec3}

Driver::
rsbhagvf
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exeWhen finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

No risk, it is just that if this fails as I feel it may we will need to work outside of windows..

So next question then is are you able to burn a CD or do you have a USB drive of at least 4Gb that we can use for data transfer.  (everything on the USB will be wiped so remove any files you want to keep first )

Hi there,
thanks for your patience here ;)
The only Windows CD I have is the Upgrade to 7 HP sent me. I guess this is not what you're asking for, ain't it?
regarding 4gb usb... nope.. I have a DVD-R, if it's ok.
I know this question might sound stupid, but... if you know it is going to fail, why take the risk? What is exactly we have to remove know from the PC? Asking because it seems to work fine since the magic we did yesterday. Avast is calm, with no more alarming pop-ups or trojans in the vault. And Malwarebytes also is clean.
As you may figure out, I am just a plain Pc user. Changing anything in this thing makes me sweat! jaja

This is a new variant that we found the other day...  It will sit quiescent for a while and then jump back up again

I am not 100% sure that it will fail but there is always that possibility.

If I have detected and included all the drivers in the fix then it will die, but if one is hidden it will regenerate

The combofix log will show me if it worked

glups.
gotcha
so there we go then... what should I do with the DVD-R? make some sort of backup copy?

No we will just use that to create a windows recovery console if needed, that will then allow us to work outside of windows  ;D

working all morning with PC and everything seems to be ok... no pop-ups, no weird things. Hope it stays like this. Really happy with Avast. I was using Microsoft Forefront when the trojan infected my PC. Not going back to it and sticking with Avast. Kudos for all your help  ;D

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean  :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
 Now we can purge the infected ones
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif)
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/225044-preventing-malware-and-safe-computing/)

Keep safe  :wave:

Hello,
I've been using the PC for a while now and everything seems fine after de clean-up... except that Windows Updates does not work. I keep on getting an error 80246008.  BITS is missing from my Services list.  Windows Update hasn't been working since the trojan infection. When the infection started I basically couldn't even access the service. Now I can see it, and I see the message saying there are 14 updates pending to be downloaded, but when I click an try to get them I get the error message.
Any idea on how can I fix it?
