Title: Notification Icon - Old Topic, but potential solution?
Post by: Chiggamuffin on July 11, 2012, 02:26:06 PM
Hi guys, especially Filip Havlicek, someone I have seen comment on this issue quite a lot.

I have just moved over to avast! from Lookout and the phone already seems a little nippier! Weird that; didn't think it would make any actual difference - just wanted the smaller footprint and extra features.

The only thing is, I have an issue with the notification icon. Of course, we all want the protection, but some people don't want the icon taking up space - understandable.

I would like to ask if we could look at the Ongoing notification of the app My Data Manager.
When you slide down the notification drawer it shows the data consumption as expected in the ongoing notification section, but when the drawer is opened or closed, the top notification bar does not show the icon at all.  Whether they made this transparent and made it always move to the end, I don't know, but they figured something out to allow the process to be ongoing and available in the swipe down section, without it taking up a space in the notification bar at all.  Seems like following this model would enable an option to switch the icon on or off, whilst still providing protection.

Is this something the team is looking to implement?

For the app to check it out, it's here: My Data Manager on Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tb2JpZGlhLmFuZHJvaWQubWRtIl0.)

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Kind regards,

Chigs

OK, it seems to work for them to some extend, we will probably look at it and possibly implement it if we see fit :)

Huzzah! I know there will be some who are indifferent to this suggestion and some who may even be annoyed by it (unless there's an option to keep it as is, as well as turn it off entirely, and the new option of on, but not visibly so) but for those of us who have too many notifications which serve no purpose 90% of the time (the drop down is where the real info is at "... is protecting you!" ;)) then the option to hide such things is perfect.

You should get this mug Filip!

Hi,

we took a look at the notification icon and unfortunately it kinda doesn't work as expected on ICS :( Check out the screenshots I attached. First three are taken from Android 2.3 and the icon is successfully "hidden". The last screenshot is taken from an ICS device and as you can see, there is an empty box in the middle of the notification which is from our "hidden" icon. The same applies for "My Data Manager" on ICS, we tried it.

Too bad, I was really looking forward to hiding the icon :(

Filip

PS: Nah, was just trying something and posted by accident :)

I'm on ICS 4.0.3 (T-Mobile UK on SGS II) and it does hide the icon from My Data Manager just fine.  Very very rarely I get the blank space in between but it disappears again, which led me to believe they were somehow moving it to the end permanently, so it seemed to not take up the space.

Hmm, the plot thickens.

There's still potential.

If you DM me your email can show you screens of my notification area with My Data Manager on ICS - easier than uploading here from my phone as I'm at work :$

Well, the thing is if there are some non-ongoing notifications, the blank space is there. The mechanism tries to move it to the end, but that works on pre-ICS systems only. On ICS it moves the black space to the end of the ongoing notification only not taking the other notifications into account.

Strange, because I don't get that much at all. I usually have notifications aplenty (non-ongoing) banging about due to Google+ Messenger Android Huddle (73 people strong) going off most hours of the day and various WhatsApp groups, GTalk and others.  Still no gap - it's very rare to see that blank space.

Makes me a little sad. Either way if you believe you need me to test any builds for such activity I'm happy to help.

I'm not an experienced Android programmer, so I might be far off here. I have lots of apps that does not have an icon, but instead has a sticky notification on the pull-down part of the statusbar and they seem to be running just fine. This does not work?

This (the empty box) might also be HTC issue, because we've tried it on One X.

TheForumTroll: What apps exactly? The problem is, that if you want to show any kind of notification, you have to provide an icon. Usually to achieve "no icon" effect, a transparent icon is provided and moved to the far right. The problem is that the system might move it only to the right of the on-going notifications and leave a gap there..
