Title: Win32 downloader -pku frequent alerts
Post by: 612163 on July 17, 2012, 12:34:59 PM
Hi, I too am having problems with Avast giving me frequent warnings that Win32 downloader-pku has been blocked and moved to chest. Does this mean that my machine IS infected or does it just tell me that a threat has been made. Yesterday I ran the anti malware programmes and each time there were threats that have been removed. If my machine is infected and I am not able to remove the threats I do have a disk image file that was created by Win7 backup from about 3 weeks ago. Would it be safe to reload the pc from this ?.
Here are two of my log files I got when running malware software yesterday.

This needs further analysis by a malware removal specialist:
Go to this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0) for information on Logs to assist in cleaning malware. Use the information about getting and using the tools and attach the remainder of logs here, not in the LOGS topic.

Here are the logs as requested

It will probably be a little while before a malware removal specialist can check the logs (time zone ping pong and work commitments). Essexboy who deals with the bulk of these is probably still at work (now almost 13:45pm in the UK).

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

First of all, thank you very much for your help, you have certainly made the job easy. I have attached the log file from the OTL run, I then disabled Avast ready to run Combo fix, but during the run I had a message to say that avast antivirus and avast antispyware scanners were still active but that Combofix would continue to run. As I had seen the point about not running Combofix a second time I allowed it to continue to completion. I had disconnected from the router during these runs.  The combofix text is also attached and since doing these procedures I haven't had any virus messages appear.  From what you have been able to see, was my machine infected ? and should I be taking any steps to change passwords for banking etc. Since the start of my problems I have not logged on to any site that requires a password except for using outlook once to get emails.
Thanks again

Unfortunately due to the current nature of malware, there is in effect a programme that you can buy (if so inclined) that can be used for a variety of different purposes.  So I would always recommend that you change passwords and monitor accounts, in case you have the variety that steals passwords

Could you check the system out now .. Windows updates AV etc and ensure that they are working properly

Also do you have any additional problems ?

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTLRemove ComboFix

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
(http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif)
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
Now we can purge the infected ones
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/225044-preventing-malware-and-safe-computing/)

Keep safe

I appear to be having the same issues. I didnt want to run the fix without checking with you first. I am running Windows XP 5.1 SP3 with FF v12. The ads are trying to pop using IE though. I have attached the errors I am getting - the IPs of the sites Malwarebytes are blocking are rotating among like 5-6. Please let me know how to proceed.

Thanks!!
Jack

do not run fix made for others as it is unique for every machine, so it can damage yours if you run it. thats why every fix start with a warning
start your own topic and attach the logs requested
