avast can't block the access to Internet...
It should be most probably your firewall or the site need a security option of your browser (like ActiveX or Cookies or Scripts).
Which is the site address?
-
Computer illiterate here-what is side address?

No, it's my fault...
I meant, Which is the site address?
Which site you can't go...
-
Can go to sites but cannot proceed past login page at any secure login sites like paypal, phone company, even www.games.com. I have no problems logging into forums-just the sites that have a secure login.

Ok... can you answer the other question?
-
Don't know about firewall-just whatever Gateway shipped it with. I have latest Internet Explorer browser-sorry if that doesn't answer question. I did have Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security installed but uninstalled them.

See How important is it to completely remove Norton? (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9578.0) topic.
If you can connect the Internet and the sites but only not logged, the most probably thing is that you blocked the Cookies.
In your browser, see Tools > Options > Privacy and check if the site is listed on the blocked Cookies list.
-
No-these sites are listed in the always allow list-double checked them to be sure. I will read the other thread too. Thanks for all your help.

Well, I thought the most probable thing was the cookie problem...
Maybe you need a script to logon and it's being blocked by IE... Can you talk more about the level of IE Security you're using?
Are scripts blocked?
Which firewall are you using?
-
Pardon a dumb question but how do I find out about the firewall? I used to have internet security set to medium but just noticed that I can't reset it-it stays at medium no matter what I select.

Do you use ZoneAlarm, Sygate Personal Firewall, Agnitum Outpost, Kerio?
No... you don't have a firewall...
You should have one... See 'Links' on my signature and search the Off Topic board for firewall suggestions.
ZA will be a good one for you.
I used to have internet security set to medium but just noticed that I can't reset it-it stays at medium no matter what I select.
You can check on the 'Customize' button and see the script options (generally the last ones there).

Yeehaw!!! Thank you Technical-it was in scripting. I do have Sygate on my computer but not installed. It is a 2000 version-would it still be good to use?

You're welcome!

In fact, I'll suggest you take the newest version of the firewall you would install.
Sygate is a good one (maybe some warnings while updating avast)
ZoneAlarm is very good (some systems become instable with it, some other software complains)
Kerio (old version 2) is a good alternative. Newers versions became a bloatware...
Outpost is good on the professional version, the free version is not that good.
After all, Sygate or ZA free 8)
