Title: Which Update am I suppose to use?
Post by: Jesse-L on July 25, 2012, 02:22:33 PM
I'm a little confused about the "New Business products v.7 update available!" thread as none of those names corrispond to my order.

I ordered on 12/13/2011 here's what my order email says

Product SKU: BPN-06-000-24
Product Name: avast! Business Protection, 2 Years Qty Ordered: 70
Amount: $2,935.10
License Key:

Which of the updates am I suppose to use?

You are eligible to upgrade to avast! Endpoint Protection Suite - the upgrade is free.

I've just gone through the aclimation process of bizzare names and upgrade paths...  On the best of days it isn't straight forward, and most other days I'd call it worse.

For 70 users on the v6 product I assume you did the small office version (setup_console_bp.exe) - the most direct upgrade for that is the endpoint protection suite "small office administrator" (SOA for short) - which you'll see mentioned in the forums...  The file to download is setup_console_eps.exe - which is basically the same silverlight/web console you are used to, just for the v7 product.

You probably want to contact your reseller to make sure you don't need a new license key.  It will be free, but you may need a new key - it's unclear to me what situations the key works and what situations require a new key.  (sorry).

As far as I'm aware, SOA (Small Office Administration) is a brand new "stripped down" console for smaller installations. The current version is 1.2.2.8. SOA uses SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5. I am under the impression there is no way of getting existing (v7) console data into this (v1) package.

I would have thought the EA Console (Version 7.x) would be the natural upgrade path for existing systems. It is the latest version of the previous console, so it ought to be possible to run a straight upgrade.

I agree this is all very confusing.

There is a lot of misinformation running around these threads...  SOA was brand new when it was SBC (small business concole) with in the avast! v6 AV product.  Here is the FAQ:

Hello,

I'm grateful for the clarification regarding the renaming of SBC to SOA. If your assumption is correct (and they are using SBC), it sounds as though the OP will be fine to move moving straight to SOA.

The only thing I don't like is that the client is upgraded, and not removed, prior to installation.  So, I recommend to uninstall the client 1st, which is a pain, but solves all sorts of "antivirus leftovers" issues!
