Since I upgraded my free version recently I keep getting the attached message on my PC saying memory cannot be read. Can you please advise as to how to stop it but mostly, is it causing problems that I haven't seen yet?
-
- Which version..??
- OS..?? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP..?)
- Other security related software installed..??
- Which AV did you use before avast!..??
-
Oops sorry...
Version is 1456: Op system is 32 bit Win XP SP3. I've used free Avast coming up to 1 year in September and AVG prior to that. This is the first error I've noticed. I use Outpost (free) as my Firewall s/w and SpyBot as my malware s/w.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

And as mentioned previously, it is Avast release 1456..

Before we start, I would drop Spybot...!! ;)
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

Thanks for that quick turn round - I'll try that later.
But one question, why drop Spybot as it seems to be one of the most respected applications available

But one question, why drop Spybot as it seems to be one of the most respected applications available
3 reasons:
1. Spybot is outdated and avast! already scans for spyware.
2. It can make problems with avast!
3. If you need a 2nd opinion, MBAM is much better.

Disabling SpyBot Search & Destroy's TeaTimer module will remove a major source of problems. When installing, or when some programs are modified during updating, TeaTimer will make decisions on whether to allow the change if it is within the parameters set by TeaTimer.
http://www.safer-networking.org/faq/how-to-disable-spybot-sd-temporarily/ (http://www.safer-networking.org/faq/how-to-disable-spybot-sd-temporarily/)
Although the title of the page says temporarily, it is disabled until manually activated.
Edited: Modified link. SpyBot S&D's site has changed. Main URL is the same, but major rework.

As instructed earlier in this topic, I did the remove and re-install of Avast plus the disabling of Spybot - not a remove. But I still get the same message on restarting the PC. Pressing OK and continuing doesn't seem to cause any problems per se (fingers crossed!) but I'd rather not get that message at all. Is there anything else I could try?

Is there anything else I could try?
As said, drop SB.
-
Thought so - I'll get that done and see what happens then
Thanks

Sorry for delay in getting back here but holidays interrupted flow!!
Anyway, I've got rid of SB in its entirety as suggested yet the message still comes up on booting up.
Apart from that everything seems to be running OK but is there anything else to look for?
