Title: Missing .dlls avast software\avast\defs\12072600\
Post by: fuzzy1 on July 27, 2012, 03:31:00 PM
In addition to the double audio notification on VDB update, a full system scan reveals the following missing DLL files
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\algo.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswcmnbs.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswcmnis.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswcmnos.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswengin.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswfidp.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswrep.dll
c:\program files\avast software\avast\defs\12072600\aswscan.dll

Please Advise

Nothing to worry about, those are are files in old virus definitions folders and avast is doing some housecleaning to keep the size used on the hard disk to a minimum. This just happens to have occurred between the time you started the scan and it reaching that old defs folder.

I suppose I could buy that if it hadn't also happened to occur in daily scans two days consecutively after renewing my subscription and updating from Pro 4.x to Pro 7.x.

Also the status in the logs for the last two days indicates "Error: The system cannot find the path specified (3)".
Add that to the fact that we're getting this double audio notification of the virus database update and well...
Multiple errors and a known bug?

Still worried ;-(

The other thing if it has happened in consecutive days in a row, it means you are running an on-demand scan every day, which on a resident on-access antivirus is a much depreciated requirement.

With a resident on-access antivirus like avast, the need for frequent on-demand scans is much depreciated. For the most part the on-demand scan is going to be scanning files that would be otherwise be dormant or inert. If they were active files then the on-access file system shield would be scanning them before being created, modified, opened or executed.

I have avast set to do a scheduled weekly Quick scan, set at a time and day that I know the computer will be on. If for some reason my system wasn't on, no big deal I will catch up on the next scheduled scan.

In all of the time that I have been doing scheduled scans this way I have only once come across message.

I honestly can't understand the paranoia about the double audio update notice that is flying around, yes it is a bug and in due course will be squashed. If it bugs people so much they can turn off the auto update notification it has nothing to do with security as such. What really is more important is if it fails and you get the pop-up notification about that, even if the auto update notification is turned of.

If you start a scan, and then Avast does housekeeping during it, the files that are removed during that housekeeping will be logged as missing files.  Typically, they are in a folder such as 1702700 in the Defs folder.  For me on WinXP, that path would be C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs.  1702700 is the current VPS folder, and will be deleted at some point after updating to a newer VPS update.  If I start a scan during this interval between updating and housekeeping, I would have the same error.

As DavidR stated, I've never had this error.  It's a matter of luck and timing whether this happens at all, but it is nothing to be worried about.
