"AppRemover (http://www.appremover.com/) will find and uninstall any security applications on your system, such as virus protection programs and spybot removers. Sometimes antivirus programs do not uninstall completely, so if you're replacing one security application with another, AppRemover can help you remove the old program so you can start fresh with the new one. This free program works well and installs and uninstalls with no problems. It is useful for ensuring that there are no remnants of old and outdated security software lurking in your PC."
AppRemover (http://www.appremover.com/) requires no installation. Simply download and run.AppRemover (http://www.appremover.com/) recognizes the programs from all of the current OPSWAT Certified Partners (http://www.opswat.com/certified/opswat-certified-partners)

I just tried to save / run it from the links you supplied Bob and windows smart screen simply blocks it outright ???
-
Seems to have a lot of supported applications http://www.appremover.com/supported-applications (http://www.appremover.com/supported-applications).
@ craigb
I guess smart screen isn't that smart ;D
Are you actually trying to download and run in one action, rather than just save ?

I think this list is different to what it works on (though it would make sense that it did), there are the opswat-certified-partners, e.g. if you are going to choose a security application choose one from this list. The link I gave is I believe what is incorporated in the tool.

Thanks Bob, this little app is exactly what i needed. :)

Tried running and saving - Just tells me that AppRemover.exe is unsafe to download and was blocked by smartscreen filter.
Found and older version at CNet that allowed me to run until once the program started it then tells me its outdated and directs me straight to Opswat where smartscreen refuses to allow a download from Opswat.

Craig,
You must have used the alternate download I originally posted and what it didn't like was the so called free scan
which is why I removed that link.
I've made a video of the program in operation :
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-vSic0iJgyeaVZ6SjJlTTZiYmM (https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-vSic0iJgyeaVZ6SjJlTTZiYmM)
You'll notice that it failed because you need to remove the avast! self protection module.
The second run worked like a charm after I unchecked that feature in avast!
-
Here's the follow up video showing AppRemover doing it's job with a little help:

Its not avast blocking it, its windows smartscreen, cant download on either of the computers.
I'll turn of smartscreen and see what happens :-X
-
With smartscreen it works on how common the file is .. I usually have to disable smart screen to download some of my more esoteric tools

It did it's job once I disabled the avast! self defense module in the troubleshooting section of the settings function.

There's one way to find out..... Try it.
I've already removed avast! once and have just finished re-installing it. :D

Finally got it to download and run by turning off smartscreen, 40 mins to run the program and found no leftovers of anything ;D disappointed in one way as i was hoping for it to have found something after all that stuffing around but im glad it didn't - at least i know that my cleaning routine is better than any programs ;)

do you use cilit bang bang. ;D

Well, I ran it twice ........... 45 minutes to tell me there were no left overs, second run to uninstall avast and nothing, it says there are zero applications installed ::) ::) ::)
So just put it on a neighbours machine that is messed up and needs cleaning and yet again, it runs forever and finally says nothing is installed ............ dumped straight in the cr*pper. .

I just ran it in safe mode and that doesn't work.
I had no problems with it detecting avast! the only problem I had in the regular mode it was not able to bypass the avast self defense module (+1 for avast!) and in safe mode, it didn't remove avast at all even after detecting it.
I wish I had a computer that had leftovers from some other AV's on it for testing but, since I only use avast! that isn't possible for me.

My Win7 desktop was used to try Auslogics AV and then the new Bitdefender a couple of weeks back, there are still some folders with items in the programs files, this app certainly didn't see them.
My neighbours machine has MSE4 and AVG + he had something from Symantec on there along with all the malware he downloads with his cracked software and keygens, nothing was detected.

You'll find a listing of the applications that are supposed to be supported at:

Sorry for the late reply Bob,
Yes, I had seen that and the appremover failed to find Bitdefender and McAffee on one machine and Bitdefender and MSE on another. Personally I wonder if all these removal programs are not just more uneeded junk. If a user turns of self defence on most AV's and runs the proper uninstaller then that should be enough, I have never had any issue with an AV not working because of "remnants" on any of my systems. Windows programs always leave empty folders and registry info behind and all these cleaners and improvers do zippo in reality.
I looked at a program recently that promised to "speed and tune your system" sure it finds old unused references in the registry but did it make any difference to performance? No way, and the sad thing is people part with cash for a lot of these apps that do nout and could wreck your system.
Having used Linux almost exclusively now for the last 2 months it has really hit home just how much of your time Windows wastes with scans, checks and defragging ,tweaking/improving/repairing etc. Linux simply runs and cares for itself leaving the user free to use their machine ........... and it's all free ;D 8)

@ AdrianH,
MSE is listed as a non covered item. This really isn't a discussion about Operating systems. :)
I've heard back from the developers regarding the inability of their program to remove avast! and they sent me the following
README file which spells out the limitations of the current AppRemover build. You'll notice that avast! is part of that report.
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-vSic0iJgyeMUhqb1M3M292WTQ (https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-vSic0iJgyeMUhqb1M3M292WTQ)
I'd be happy to pass along the rest of the email to those interested.

MSN????????? Never mentioned it.
I know the discussion is not about OS's but with Windows systems you get all these so called cures and fixes that are all too often useless and not necessary in the first place. Having compared Windows and Linux though it really does show up just how much you actually do run , just look at all the signatures here, to try to keep your systems in order.

If you can use one tool to find what you have installed on your system, and use the same tool to remove what it finds,
then why not make life easier ???
It not only works with avast!

then why not make life easier ???
Undoubtedly, but, will it do the full job as the dedicated original uninstall tool?
