Title: Win32 Malware/Trojan-gen Pop Up (getting popular isnt it?)
Post by: sonik on August 11, 2012, 08:24:37 PM
Hey Everyone,

I have been having a problem with this malware and it couldn't have come at a worse time (projects are due).
I see that it is a popular one, and a pretty bad one (it blocked me out of all apps). I've attached the OTL and aswMBR logs and included the code in this forum in the custom scans/fixes of OTL: /index.php?topic=102953.0

Just wondering if someone might be able to take a look at it.

Much thanks, Cheers!

Can you also run MBAM and attach (or copy and paste) its log contents.

A malware removal specialist has been informed of your topic.

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

FINALLY

run farbar service scanner (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FSS.exe)

Tick "All" options.
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hello guys, thank you very much for the prompt reply.  :)

Everything seems to be working normally so far. That said, while ComboFix was doing its job, it told me that MSE was still monitoring my system and I could damage the machine if I continued. MSE (did and still) say it's not working and that the service is not working.

Also, can I turn avast! back on now, or wait?  :-\

I did what you have showed essexboy, thank you very much for helping me.

Attatched are the OTL, ComboFix and Farbar logs.

Right click the following link and select "Save Target As..." and save to the desktop
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/bits.reg
Right click the reg file and select merge
Accept the warnings
Reboot and see if MSE is now operative

Start Avast again, I would also uninstall MSE as two av's is not a good policy

Once done let me know how the computer is running

Hey essexboy,

Thanks again for your time. I right clicked and saved the registry file to my desktop, but it is listing as a text file and will not change.

I made sure to right click the file and then 'unblock' it (as it came from another computer).

I also tried opening regedit and importing it from there, yet it does not see the file on the desktop when I go to search for it. Any thoughts?

OK download this zip file https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/bits.zip to your desktop
Extract the bits.reg
Double click and allow to merge in the registry

then reboot..

Any further problems ?

Hey again,

So I downloaded the zip, and successfully extracted the .reg file, merged it, and rebooted.
I then turned avast! off temporarily to turn on MSE, yet MSE is still telling me:

'Couldn't start the Security Essentials Service, the specified system does not exist'

I've turned avast! back on and other than MSE not working, so far nothing has happened.
No pop ups, nothing malicious. Thank you again :)

OK the malware has broken MSE the only way to fix that would be to uninstall then reinstall

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTLRemove ComboFix

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
Now we can purge the infected ones
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
