Title: Firewall specifics
Post by: greiam on August 17, 2012, 09:52:13 PM
This may belong in the non-beta section of the forum, but since I'm running the beta, I'm asking here.

Is there any documentation anywhere that explains exactly what the firewall does and doesn't do? For example, does it detect any attempts to access my device over wifi by an unwanted intruder? I'm using Droid Guard to detect ARP intrusions. It finds some, but I suspect they're false positives. They're from my own home network. Does the firewall detect those ARP intrusions, too? Does it log all activities? Where would that log be on my device if I want to see it?

Thanks.

Whilst this isn't directly related to the beta, but I would imagine the functionality would generally be the same. I'm also not sure if it goes into enough detail for you.

Thanks, DavidR. I'd seen some of this, but not the pdf.

It's still a bit vague to me. Does this firewall only address outgoing traffic? Or does it protect against incoming attacks that aren't appropriate?

It addresses applications' outbound connections.
Linux doesn't have a zillion needlessly open ports like Windows so not much could be attacked. But I still wonder about it myself.
If a compromised website decides to give us a trojan of some sort, it would be seen by Avast, but after installation. Not sure if prevention is in the picture, but the trojan is unlikely to run. I think. I hope.

OK. That's good to know. I'm only mildly paranoid about outside attacks and snooping in public places, etc., but it concerns me enough to want to have safeguards.

Thanks.
