My Avast protection was about to run out. I've downloaded it twice, the first time I chose the option to restart later but when I restarted, the Avast symbol told me I was unprotected. The second time I chose the option to re-start immediately but the Avast programme still isn't working. I am using Firefox and Windows Vista. Please advise.

It is the Avast free version which I've already had running for a year.
The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
I have no other security-related software installed.

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

It's working now. Had to download twice more as I hadn't noticed the pre-ticked options for Google Chrome which I didn't want. Thank you for your help.
