Title: Avast and Microsoft AntiSpyware
Post by: traherom on January 16, 2005, 02:20:36 PM
I have Avast! 4.5.561 installed on an Win XP SP2 machine. On installing Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta version 1.0.501, Windows stopped recognizing Avast! as being installed. (IE it gives me the "Your computer may be at risk! ..." popup.) I can eliminate the popup by telling it I'll monitor it myself, but it's still irritating... :) Any ideas?

I dont like the security center myself. Which is why I disable it.

If you would like to do this then,

right click on my computer

select manage

A window called computer management will pop up.

Expand the "Services and applications"  icon by clicking on the +

Now select "services"

In the right column Scroll down to security center,

right click on it

select properties

and select startup type > Disabled

close everything , and restart PC.

Welcome to the forum.
I'm running virtually the same system as you and have no problems with the security center recognizing
avast!. Have you tried doing a repair of avast!? Add/remove programs> select avst! and then select repair.
Let us know how you make out.

Tried a repair, same problem. But thanks DukeNukem for the suggestion on disabling Security Center totally. On my desktop, I can at least just tell it to ignore the "problem," but on my laptop it gets reset each time I restart...

Hi, Chris305 is right (it's only my own opinion)
Firefox is really a good internet browser, very stable, and with a better security.
It's working fine with Avast!  8)

traherom,

try this:
- remove Avast using the uninstall util from the website.
- reboot
- install Avast

That should solve the problem with security center.

Most probably...
Does this MS application blocks (monitors) the startup items?
If so, did it remove avast from starting up processes?
I'll start hating it if it did this...

First of alll, sorry me for my bad english, traherom. I´m using XP home SP2 with the security center enabled, and I started to used Avast one month ago with the windows anti apy you describe and I have no incompatiblities, no crashes and no error messagas any kind. I´m not and expert but if you permise me I recommand you to use some system cleaner ( TuneUp utilities, for exemple ) to do a strong clean up on the registry, maybe is the only real trouble you have. I have not a long experience with avast but I´m very satisfied and agree to that effective and FREE  ;D antivirus. I hope I´be been help you with my point of view. Greetings, fotudet

All I can suggest is that the MS Antispyware Real-time protection has added the avast! antivirus services to its blocked list and has now prevented Windows from detecting avast.

Open MS Antispyware, then click on 'Real-time Protection' under the System Summary heading. Then click on 'System Agents'. Select 'Windows Services' and then click on 'Manage allowed/blocked WindowsServices' under the details section. From the drop-down box, select 'Blocked WindowsServices' and see if avast is there. If it is, remove it from the blocked list and hopefully windows will detect avast again.

Hi, Do we really need Microsoft AntiSpyware or anyother (Spyware, Trojan Horse remover) when we have avast!? Thanks, McoreD.

In an ideal world, all you would need is avast!  ;D. However, since this is not an ideal world, it is probably better to have specialised programs for each area of security - one for antivirus, one for antispyware and one firewall application.

Some suggestions (all free for home use):

Firewall:
Outpost: http://www.agnitum.com/
Sygate: http://www.sygate.com/
Kerio: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html
ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelalarm.com

Antispyware:
MS Antispyware Beta: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.com/
Spybot Search-and-Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

M$ AntiSpyware is based on Giant's product... I noticed much false positives with this one... I don't say it's bad, but I recommend you to use Ad-Aware/Spybot S&D combo instead :) that's less bloated too  8)

However neither of those programs (Free Versions) offer any real time protection. Both are designed to remove spyware after it's already on your computer. A part of the MS AntiSpyware
software monitors your activity and warns you of any changes before they occur.
StyleWarz is correct in the fact that this program has many false positives and the program is quite bloated. On my system, It seemed to cause a start-up deleay.

I had the MS (Giant) program on my computer until just the other day, when I removed it. It took forever to boot up but seemed to do a decent job otherwise. I never had a false positive occur, nor did their antispyware ever catch anything. I don't frequent gaming sites, children's sites, or porn sites, which might explain my computer's lack of spyware.

Other than the ridiculously slow boot problem, it seemed to function nicely.

It is still a betaversion ideed!  But like it has been said before in other replies it is almost exactly the same software as Giants Anti-spyware! Kinda a shame really so I hope they don't simply copy/paste everything when the full version is released!

BTW, I read somewhere that MS is willing to make their own AV!
Don't think it will beat Avast! really!  ;)

I do recommend Spywareblaster to everyone! Afterall it is always better to prevent then to cure!  8)

Well, if M$ does his job good, they can make a very good anti-virus... They bought RAV (Romanian AntiVirus) a year or some ago... That scanner is just amazing...
But we know M$, they will screw up again, so we stay happy with Avast! :)
