Title: Why forum allot Avast problems? Install or not?
Post by: Sizzerb on August 25, 2012, 03:01:06 PM
Hello,

I really want to download avast free because they say its the best. But why i read so many problems on this forum about Avast?
Cannot match with chrome, bugs, cannot update, firewall problems, crashes and more issues.
What i must know before download? Because if i read these problems im afraid to download and to use. :-\
I have windows 7 and im planning to use the firefox browser. I also have now mcafee which i will remove soon.

You need to bear in mind that if a user has no problems then they will not post here.  However, if something goes wrong they will.  With over 150 million users, if you take the problem posts and divide them into that you will have less than 1% with problems ;D

I have used Avast since V4 many many moons ago.  I have progressed from XP to windows 7 and have yet to experience any major problems with Avast.

The Chrome problem is due to it being updated on an almost daily basis, so how can anyone keep up  ;D

If you do experience any problems at all then a post here will in all probability enable a resolution

McAfee must be uninstalled fully prior to installing Avast

How you mean fully uninstall mcafee? Is it enough if i just remove it in Control panel--programs--programs and features?

Not usually no. For most Anti-Virus programs you have to get their Removal Tool.

Avast would not be able to keep any removal tools working. Symantec/Norton seems to be trying, but the AVG remover failed on the last PC I had to install Norton on. *shudders at the thought of installing Norton*

Hmm, i always deleted only at programs and features. So this is new for me and im not IT experienced.
Anybody can help please? I want to install avast.
Delete at Programs features should be enough i heared.

To uninstall...Control Panel>Programs and Features(XP & Vista)/Uninstall(Win7)>click McAfee>uninstall>reboot.
To install avast I recommend the "custom" install. As this will allow you to carefully read each page/stage/step.  :)

To find the McAfee uninstaller see http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Use CCleaner to clean-up any leftovers. http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Why is this so difficult?
I don't know, ask McAfee.

Do i still need to deactivate?account?
No

Remove from programs and features?
Yes.

And then run mcafee removal tool?
Yes.

Delete at Programs features should be enough i heared.
You heard wrong, I'm afraid. That is good enough for most programs, not for security/anti-malware software like McAfee, Norton, AVG, or Avast.

You have to use the removal tool. Rather than use Avast's tools, it is probably best to use McAfee's.

@ Sizzerb
In all honesty you may get away with just uninstalling McAfee from programs and features, reboot and install avast. But if you do experience problems it becomes more of an issue as you may well have to still use the McAfee removal too and may have to reinstall avast.

So call it belt an braces to ensure that you have completely removed McAfee but It may be quicker in the long term. We have seen instances in the forums where McAfee remnants were left behind after using the programs and features uninstall.

Okay, thanx everybody i will try to remove at programs and then run the remove tool.

Then install Avast!

Sorry if i post it here...Does anybody know by chance why i always get when shutdown or restart the screen force shutdownthere are still background processes open. It dont show which is open, just see screen quick and shutdown. This is really annoying, and i never had this. Now everytime. I even restored everything back to factory setting.... This cannot be a virus or hacker right? Because i restored everything back to factory settings. Before restore i ran allot of scanners and nothing... I see this as very strange.

That is probably one of your programmes not shutting down in a timely manner... Does it state the programme name ?

Dont think mcafee has something to do with it, because never used mcafee and still had that problem in the past.

Avast only causes problems for Chrome when you disable sandbox mode apparently.
Sandbox mode a secure mode to prevent infections from getting onto your computer. It is safer as a result, and best to leave it on. Avast works fine with Chrome for most people, and under normal circumstances.

If you find a website that does not work in Chrome's Sandbox, then just use a different browser, Firefox is very useful for that purpose.

But i want avast free... And dont have sandbox right?
Or the first 30 days its full then free?

You can choose the 30 day full option, or start out with free from day one. It is your choice, depending on which version you download.

As far as Chrome and the free version, not having used either Chrome or the Sandbox, I cannot comment further... From what little I have read on it, it makes perfect sense to me that the free version would not have any problems with Chrome at all.
