Hi,
i have the latest avast free on my xp sp3 32bit laptop. it was working fine for at least a month until microsoft's last update release. since then, when i start, i no longer see the avast icon in system tray but avastsvc is running. Also, shutdown takes considerably longer than it used to.
i tried a repair install. the repair completed ok but the problem remains.
i tried a complete uninstall/re-install but the problem remains.
a full scan with malwarebytes free shows 0 malicious items.
No other anitvirus software installed.
any ideas how to fix this?
thx

Do you have any anti-spyware installed (if so what) ?
What firewall do you use ?
-
hi,
i have malwarebytes free version installed, so no realtime protection there. I don't have any other security software installed. I use the standard windows firewall. As i said, everything was working fine for at least a month and i haven't installed/uninstalled anything in that time.
thanks

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

hi,
i booted in safe mode -> ran uninstall utility -> rebooted into normal mode -> installed avast free -> rebooted
problem still remains :((
-
...when i start, i no longer see the avast icon in system tray but avastsvc is running.
Did you maybe just hide the icon..??
-
hi,
no icon is not hidden, besides:
1. avastui.exe is not shown in running tasks
2. abnormally long delay on shutdown
-
Is "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\avastUI.exe" /nogui present and activated in startup..??
-
yes, it is

To rule out an infection: Please attach your logs. (AdwCleaner, MBAM, OTL and aswMBR..!!)

Your OTL log shows you still have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, this needs to be fully removed if you want avast to work correctly.

He mentioned the install in Reply #10. ;)

Hi there is also no indication of Avast running in the services/drivers and no run keys are present. When you try to install Avast are any errors presented ?

i did not see any errors during avast installation.

Could you install Avast please and then run a fresh OTL log.. You can keep MSE on for the duration

it is working normally. avast icon is the first thing that appears in the system tray and shutdown is very quick again.
