Can Avast4 free bet set to automatically run a scan at a given time or every so many days?

In Professional version, it's possible - any task can be scheduled.
In the Home version, you may be able to do it using the standard Windows Scheduler...

If I use Windows Scheduler is there a particular file I should run that will actually perform the scan rather than just start up avast?

You can use ashQuick.exe .
E.g.

ashQuick.exe C:\

would (surprisingly) scan disk C:.

It works. :)

For those interested Windows Scheduler must be set up to run exactly this

"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" C:\

note the C:\ outside the quotation marks to scan drive C
