Are you sure sygate is not blocking the updates?

To check Right click the Sygate icon in the taskbar (next to your system clock) and choose Exit firewall, then try and update your programs, if they update successfully, you know its the firewall.

*Note* , don't forget to re-open the firewall after you have tested if your programs update or not.

okay went ahead and shut down sygate same thing it is not updating is it possible that some how the connection was attacked by the viruses that were on the computer?

Not likley i would think, but you could try a repair of avast to be safe (Control Panel>Add/change programs>Avast>change>repair).

Also you could try right clicking the Avast "A" ball (next to your system clock) and choosing 'Program settings...', then choose 'Update (connections)' on the left side, then make sure 'I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem' is checked and not the other one.

Remove network settings.
Remove network protocols and network card.
Reboot
Reinstall everything.

See if that solves it.
