windows is telling me that my virusprotection is off. however, my firewall is on, and so is the automatic updates. i can't figure out how to turn the virus protection on again. is windows mistaking? if not, how can i turn it on again?

What exact version of Avast do you have installed?
Is your system time/date correct?
-
the version I use is avast 4.5 home addition (0504-4, 28.01.05), and I don't exactly know how to find out of it's date correct
-
Right click the blue ball with the 'A' and choose about. There you can find the exact version of Avast (eg 4.5.561, 4.5.578)
To check your system time/date. Double click the clock in the taskbar and make sure it is correct.

verson 4.5-561, and my date and time is correct

Does Windows security center is recognizing Avast?
Is there a little red circle at the blue ball?
-
there's no red circle, and it seems to me that avast is running, even though windows says otherwise... i'm not sure
-
See if a repair solves the problem.
start > control panel > add/remove > Avast > change/uninstall > repair.
-
nothing changed. when I touch the Avast! icon, i get this message: avast! On-Access Scanner: 3 providers total, 2 running. it's supposed to be like this?
-
Yup, that is how it should be.
-
OK, then maybe window is mistaking. thanks a lot, eddy
-
It sure looks that way.
If you want to make sure Avast is working use the eicar test file.
(Info about eicar) (http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm)

Sorry if i am wrong and am confusing things here but should there not be 6 providers total and not 3?
-
Home edition has less providers than the Pro version.
How many providers also depend on how many you have installed/removed.
-
Oh rite ok. Its just i have Home Edition installed as well and had 6 providers total so though it was bit strange.
