Title: Unable to enable all shields
Post by: myhero on October 24, 2012, 05:45:19 PM
Hi,

I have had AVG installed and suddenly my PC went super slow and I AVG antivirus and identity protection was disabled. I was unable to re-enable it. I uninstalled it and subsequently had to re-install windows. The PC ran fine to a few days after I reinstalled Windows 7 and installed AVG once again.

The same issue happened today, and I downloaded Avast and also I am unable to enable all shields. I am concerned that there is some malicious software on my PC.

I've read a post that suggested I run 'The Avenger' but Im uncertain what commands to enter. I've just downloaded Microsoft Anti-Malware tool x64 and its currently running - so far 0 infected files found.

And still I do not have any protection.

Please help - I need to find and get rid of this malicious software - before the blue screens start!

Don't start running multiple tools you likely to make things worse.

How did you remove A V G ?

I would also suggest that you uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/), this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I removed AVG using the uninstall option on the AVG interface. Then I downloaded the removal tool from the website and used that as well.

Anything that you could recommend for me to get the shields active again?

Tx

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

The repair as suggested, if that doesn't resolve it then it may require a clean reinstall of avast also.

Please do not use Avenger, it could ruin your day.  Anything it deletes will be permanent, and there is no white list with it

Hi.

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling - uninstall was successful but now I cannot reinstall, also windows defender is off - cant run it on either.

Dont know where this virus/malware is hiding and no way for me to remove it. My PC has started freezing every 5 mins (almost sounds like a hard drive is shutting down) then it comes back to life and I can continue for a 3 mins before it does it again.

I positive my HDD is fine - def some sort of malware that's causing chaos.

Any other ideas before I fresh install windows for the second time and possibly format my C drive?

Much appreciated!
