Running:
avast! version 7.0.1473
Windows 8 Pro
Printout:
This was probably caused by the following module: aswnet.sys (0xFFFFF880064A30B6)
Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0x38, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF880064A30B6)
Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
file path: D:\Windows\system32\drivers\aswnet.sys
product: Avast Firewall
company: AVAST Software
description: AVAST Firewall Core Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: aswnet.sys (AVAST Firewall Core Driver, AVAST Software).
Unable to upload the dump onto the ftp server.
Uploaded it to my Google Drive, https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_dolYolq39ZUkVLekdLWExhSDQ
If any more information that is required, I would be more than willing to fetch it.
This is also my first post here, apologies if this is in the incorrect section.

I have no idea how to reproduce the crash as it seems to be random. But none the less, it is frequent, once, sometimes twice an hour.
-
I have no idea how to reproduce the crash as it seems to be random.
For some people, it has been opening a Start Screen app or doing something similar. If you disable the shields it will not crash.

I just installed Windows 8 Pro yesterday and installed Avast today and I have this issue as well. I randomly get either the aswnet.sys or ndis.sys crashes.
If you disable all the shields... sure the crashing stops. But then Avast is useless for on-demand protection.
I really hope this gets solved soon as I really like Avast. But for now I will need some other protection until this is solved.
-
The only shield you have to disable is Web shield. Then Windows 8 and Avast will work together. The reason may be that there is MSE inluded even Defender is off.
-
i can confirm the issue... my windows 8 crashes almost every 5 min with BSOD.
now i uninstalled avast and the problem is gone... waiting for a fix, thanks :)
-
I had the same issue as well. When I got ndis.sys BSOD I Googled it and thought it was about my ethernet driver since I found some discussions about ndis.sys meaning that. I installed another antivirus program now and it has been working fine. I would really like to get this solved because I have avast Internet Security 1 year license bought. I've used avast for years and all of our households computers. Other devices are running fine with Windows XP and Windows 7 and avast Free. I was using Windows 7 and avast Internet Security without any issues and when upgraded to Windows 8 I started getting those BSODs...
My setup:
Asus M5A99X EVO -motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 -CPU
128GB Crucial m4 SSD -hard drive (where Windows is installed)
+2x500GB HDD
8GB 1600MHz -RAM
Palit GTX670 Jetstream -graphics card
500W power supply
I couldn't find any drivers from Asus website for Win8 on my motherboard... Downloaded all drivers from Windows Update.
-
I just has this crash (aswnet.sys) myself! Windows 8 x64
I had been having problems with ndis.sys crashing previously, and had opened a thread about it in the beta section (first noticed it with the 1468 beta and KB2756872) but it seems to be much less with build 1473. Unfortunately they couldn't find the issue regarding why Avast was crashing ndis.sys.
I really hope they do fix this BSOD and the ndis.sys BSOD with Windows 8 soon! Now that Windows 8 is fully mainstream it is definitely something that should be a priority.
EDIT: Not trying to sound demanding or ungrateful! and I apologise for the (effectively) double posting (regarding my post in the beta thread regarding the related ndis.sys and aswnet.sys related issue), but since it's a related issue I felt it justified!
-
Actually just crashed again with the same error (aswnet.sys). This is something new for me, all previous crashes were with ndis.sys, so I don't know what has changed in the last day?...
In any case, will have to uninstall Avast for the moment, it's not easy to use the computer when it's BSOD'ing :'( lol
It makes you wonder how many cases of BSOD'ing are going unreported!
EDIT: Mark one up for randomness! Was going to give it another change but just BSOD'ed again, and after a run of a solid 40 hours without issue. This is really weird, as my usage pattern hasn't changed in this time, and I haven't changed anything else in the system.
Another reason not to downgrade to Windows 8 - it's ugliness isn't just skin deep!

So this latest BSOD happened without avast installed ? sounds like you have some drivers that are not compatible with your win8 upgrade :-\
Does your system have a graffics card ?
-
I meant give Avast another chance, not change! The last BSOD happened with Avast installed. I said I was going to uninstall it, but then decided to leave it and see what happens. lol.
I have since uninstalled it and not crashes now. The issue is definitely a conflict between Avast and Windows 8.
In terms of the graphics, I have a Gigabyte HD7870OC. I did have 12.8 installed, but now have the performance 12.11 drivers installed. The other ndis.sys problem I wrote about in the beta thread was when I had Catalyst 12.8 installed.
Regardless of that though, the graphics shouldn't affect ndis.sys and aswnet.sys BSOD'ing? especially considering one of the other machines that has the BSOD issue is an AMD system with an Nvidia card, every piece of hardware being difference!

Ok, I just wanted to confirm that as there has been many problems with the win8 upgrade and NVidia cards, also the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, but it doesn't look like these affect you.
-
I can confirm the same bug. Latest version of Avast! Home Edition and Windows 8 Pro. Ironically I have the same setup on my laptop, and no BSOD's at all yet. The laptop was an upgrade from Windows 7 to 8, however...and my desktop which is getting the crashes was a fresh install. What about you guys?
-
the aswNet.sys BSOD on Win8 should be fixed with the version 7.0.1474 - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=108170.0
Update your avast please (and let us know!). If it still crashes - memory.dmp is welcome on our ftp.avast.com/incoming

Just had a crash here with 1474 and aswnet.sys again!
(Windows 8 x64).
Compressing the memory dump with 7-zip (its 1GB uncompressed) and will upload.
EDIT: Uploaded
-
I can confirm it's still happening in this version too. In fact, disabling Avast's shields resolves it still, as previously suggested as a temporary fix for the version released yesterday.
-
Installed 7.0.1474, so far pleased with the result. No BSOD's have occurred yet and am staying optimistic.

In response to this comment, upload the minidumb or memdump. It's helping no one complaining about it.
I am running with all the shields online for the last hour. Normally it would have crashed two or three times by now, but it's staying strong. Honestly, I don't know what to say other than thank you avast! team.

I would love to, but having some trouble keeping the system up long enough to grab one. ;D

I got a good couple of hours before 1474 crashed for me. Hopefully the memory dump file I uploaded will help :) I still uninstalled Avast for the meantime though, as BSOD's can be annoying!
It looks like the BSOD regarding ndis.sys has been resolved though which is good.

Surprisingly I never got that one. Even odder, my laptop running Windows 8 never had any BSOD's...and it's a piece of crap. :P

I have the same problem. My pc crash with aswnet.sys and ndis.sys when I install a program with windows 8.
In my laptop, I upgrade windows 7 to windows 8 and any problem but in the Home PC, I was a fresh install and I have many crash.
When I uninstall the Avast, the problem was out.
I donĀ“t have any problem with other programs or drivers.
Fixed soon please.

Still BSOD with version 1474 and aswnet.sys. When turning Webshield off, everything works. I have payed this product and they have had six days to correct the problem. Not a pro work at all.

Patience my friend, they are trying. I know it sucks, but sometimes it takes time to figure out the cause before they can find a solution. :)
As for fixing it, they have made 2 attempts in the last couple days already, which have worked for some, but not others. The issue is also not consistent as some systems get the error and some don't. We just have to wait it out and hope things get fixed soon. :)

Hi, this is strange. Others reported turning Network shield off to help, Web Shield is not directly connected to this new aswnet.sys driver (of course it uses network, so its possible of course).

It doesn't appear to be a consistent error either, so I'm wondering if it's something else on the system that is conflicting in Windows 8.

Hello everyone. I am having this same exact BSOD on Windows 8 x64 Professional. I am unable to upload my memory dump at the moment as it is a very large file and my upload speed is very poor on VDSL. Here is some information on my crash however. http://pastebin.com/Fqaxn7LT I am on Avast! Build #7.0.1474

Ahh...the old DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD reason. Same thing I've got here after further investigation [and crashing]. I remember that thing plaguing systems back in the old Windows 2000 era. ;D
-
Clean install of Windows 8 x64. First was getting BSOD of Driver IRQL not less or equal ndis.sys and now aswnet.sys BSOD's are starting. Happens at random moments. ASUS Motherboard and NVIDIA driver. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue.

From what I've heard, the previous update fixed the ndis.sys BSOD problem. Still awaiting updates on the aswnet.sys one, though. Windows 8 x86 here. My Windows 8 x64 on my other system remains unaffected by this bug.

Yes a blast from the past come back to haunt me it would seem. I recommend everyone check out this program for diagnosing BSODs as well it is what I used to generate that pastebin file. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html I have no affiliation with them, rather I am merely suggesting a peice of software that has proved useful to me over the years. ;)

I never had this problem then I updated to the new 7.0.1474 version of avast and now I do have the issue so this is not fixed.
-
I am also having this problem in my windows 8 (64 bits).
I have uninstalled avast until this problem is fixed... Because I was not able to use the computer with all these crashes.
Do you guys need my dump file? If so, How can I find my dump file in windows 8? I am a bit lost here...
Thanks for your time,
Elminster

Windows 8 Pro x 64. BSOD every few hours with Free Avast installed. DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD. Uninstalled Avast. No BSOD since using Windows Defender.
Also, when I was installing 8, my free trial of Avast Pro 7 suddenly expired. That was the first sign I had of a problem. Eventually uninstalled AVP 7 and reinstalled Free Avast, which led to the aforementioned BSOD.

Just a side warning, Windows Defender is only Anti-Spyware.
-
I've read in numerous articles that Windows Defender was expanded to also be anti-virus for Windows 8. The general consensus seems to be that Avast is better, but as long as the BSOD keeps happening with Avast, it will have to be Defender. Hopefully not for long.

It could be. I haven't checked the usage of it on my Windows 8 system that isn't getting the BSOD, but I wouldn't be surprised if I found the same result. Often times coding conflicts or errors will cause higher CPU usage, so even if our systems aren't crashing, we're likely being affected by the same bug, just in a different way.
-
I'm running 8 x64 Release Preview. I just reinstalled 8RP about 2 hours ago and downloaded Avast fresh this evening. It is 7.0.1474. My system crashed with the same BSOD relating to aswnet.sys three times in about 30 minutes. I disabled all shields about 45 minutes ago and experienced no more crashes. About 15 minutes ago I enabled all shields except for the web and network shields, since I've read it could be either, and so far it hasn't crashed again. I'll look for the dump file to upload. The only apps I have installed are Keepass and Firefox. I crashed twice before installing Firefox. One crash just moving around in Windows, one crash was when I tried to start the installer for Fx, and once after installing it when I tried to start it. Keepass was installed after the crashes.
EDIT: I uploaded "Ignotus mem dmp.zip". This is a dump before I changed Windows to do a complete dump. I had a crash after changing to complete, but there wasn't a dmp file to upload.
-
I have got four BSOD during 1474 version and everytime just after waking from sleep state. I have had also many succesful wake-ups. 1474 is much stable than 1473.

Hi guys,
we are still trying to come up with some fix for the frequent Win8 crash inside aswnet.sys.
Could you please try the following updated driver and post here if it performs any better?
The link and instructions are here:
http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/ (http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/)
It is still possible we didn't hit the right bug, so if you can, please follow the instruction on the page above and enable extra logging. Any possible dump files will be more usable for us! Thanks a lot.
Lukas
PS: please enable Network Shield, if you have previously disabled it as a workaround. Thanks.
Edit: formating.
-
Done. Fingers crossed and waiting :)
-
Done as well. Hopefully this fixes it. ;D

Lukor, I have sent you the additional logging file as well as uploaded a new dump on the incoming.

It appears to be working fine for me. No crashes at all yet on my Windows 8 Pro x86 with Media Center Pack.
@clickman: Are you using this patch on top of the latest version of Avast!'s program?

Just installed the patch over version 7.0.1474, Windows 8 Pro x64
Hope it will fix it... love your AV :)

Lukas Rypacek sent me a solution for [aswnet patch: Patch for aswNet.sys, BlueScreen in NETIO.SYS on Windows8].
It was when I am still using 7.0.1473.
At that time, one of my system BSOD, one is not.
After applied the solution, both systems are working well.
Then I upgraded to 7.0.1474 and still no BSOD on both systems.
My system is Windows 8 x64 CHS on both laptops.
My Avast is PRO version.

Day 1
No crashes so far.

Hi, you are right, the same as clickman - you are running the original version of the driver 29 Oct 2012, where the crash hasn't been fixed. Could you please try the updated driver if it helps? Thanks. Lukas.

Not sure if it has to do with Avast but from yesterday, the web browsing is not as smooth as before. I turned off Avast and its smoother.

I think there were a few topics complaining about slowness in browsing, or Avast constantly scanning sites to the point of them being hard to visit. Your issue might be relevant to that bug, but don't quote me on that. :)

On Tue 11/6/2012 12:14:57 AM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: D:\Windows\Minidump\110512-47720-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: aswnet.sys (0xFFFFF880069BB3AA)
Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0x38, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF880069BB3AA)

Have you updated to the latest version of Avast! and applied the patch yet?
See here for more information: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=108441.0
-
Looks like I didn't. Apologies, adding the updated driver now.
-
I came here and applied the patch. Before I would get a BSOD whenever I tried to download a game from the Origin client, after applying the patch I have had no issues so far, thanks.
-
You can add me to the list
And the last update said "full windows 8 compatibility"
Log files, a crash report and my system information are in my dropbox at

Thanks
Could have swore i added it already, oh well. I'll have an answer within 24-hours. It usually happens coming out of sleep or when i have my Hyper-V VMs up. Hyper-V wouldn't be causing any issues would it?
Hi, you are right, the same as clickman - you are running the original version of the driver 29 Oct 2012, where the crash hasn't been fixed. Could you please try the updated driver if it helps? Thanks. Lukas.
-
Hi, I've just checked all the uploaded dumps at our servers. All aswnet.sys crashes were inside the old version from 29th Oct. Seems like the fix somewhat helped.
-
even applying the correction and downloading the latest version of avast, I'm still having problems with windows 8 Pro .. every time I turn off all modules Protective avast or lock the computer BSOD and accuses him of the file "aswnet.sys" as error ...
-
I noticed this first when trying to install any applications...uninstalled avast and the apps would install fine without the BSOD. Also noticed it sometimes when unlocking the computer but that was always random, apps happened every time. With Autosandbox disabled I can install and run apps just fine but still get the occasional crash when unlocking the computer.
Just like to say that I don't remember having these problems with the Win 8 preview.

You need to apply the patch after updating to the latest version. :)

Just had a crash today and I have uploaded the files to the ftp server just now. I had used the updated driver and everything but I got this one crash today.
-
Did a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 64bit and upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64bit last night.
Installed Avast FREE 7.0.1474 and am receiving the crashes.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (aswnet.sys).
This is especially evident when manually locking Windows 8 (with the windows key + L) then unlocking and locking again a couple of times in a row.
At first I was cursing Windows 8, but googling this error brought up many complaints with Avast.
I did have Avast 7 Internet Security but it expires in 28 days, so I thought I would switch to the freebie when I reloaded everything.

MEMORY.7z and crash.7z

Hi Chris, could you please post the file date of your system32\drivers\aswnet.sys file? What app did you use during unpacking? Haven't the patched file ended in the \Windows\SysWow64\drivers folder instead?
From Memory.7z:
4: kd> !lmi aswnet.sys
Loaded Module Info: [aswnet.sys]
Module: aswnet
Base Address: fffff880036ea000
Image Name: aswnet.sys
Machine Type: 34404 (X64)
Time Stamp: 508e9a7f Mon Oct 29 16:02:23 2012
From Crash.7z - i both minidumps:
4: kd> !lmi aswnet.sys
Loaded Module Info: [aswnet.sys]
Module: aswnet
Base Address: fffff880036ea000
Image Name: aswnet.sys
Machine Type: 34404 (X64)
Time Stamp: 508e9a7f Mon Oct 29 16:02:23 2012
Mon Oct 29 is the date of the original unpatched version from 7.0.1474. :(
In crash.7z, one of the dumps seems to be completely unrelated. Inside svchost.exe, some memory management error - don't know any details just from a quick look.
-
I am sorry about the unrelated dumb. It was the latest intel driver crashing.
I patched the driver from here http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/ and I unzipped it to \Windows\System32
About the dates. I just checked it :
aswnet.sys - Created November 4, Modified October 29, Accessed November 4
Was disabling the self protection module necessary? Dang it! I think I might not have done that. Sorry but somehow I never had crashes, just one.
I had this crash while I was testing some vpns namely Cyberghost and Hotspot Shield and playing some videos in the background in Firefox
-
You definitely uploaded crashes with an old driver. Still wondering if this might be an avast fault (such as reverting your patch back - though it shouldn't be doing that) or you somehow failed to apply it correctly.

I will try it again and let you know if there is any crash.

We are preparing some automated update tool, that should help fixing this problem, until a full program update is released.

Had .1474 program version since installing clean W8-64 Pro on Oct. 26 and these BSOD's, mostly when logging back in after a screen lock or return from hibernation. Certainly networking seemed unstable, needing to frequently disconnect the WIFI and reconnect to get the web going again, loosing shared resources on the WLAN. After applying the patch following the instructions, system stable and dozen locks, log-in, hibernates and things remain running. The Intertubes operate spiffy again.
-
Thanks for the report, Sekerob.
-
Have been crashing after I installed windows 8 with avast, after the help from here. It did not crash for 24 hours already. I'll see if it crashes again, I'll post here. Thanks !
-
After the PTF having held the PC stable since application, sadly, after the [Massive] patch Tuesday application, nearly 200MB greater than for my W7 system [prior all uptodate], the exact same BSOD screen appeared naming aswnet.sys on W8-64 Pro. Network instability has returned.
What to do?
A) Reapply the patch [why would that work if Avast is the issuer of the aswnet.sys file?]
B) Wait for Avast to issue a new .14xx release?
Patiently waiting, as the system just does LAN file serving and distributed volunteer computing [www.wcgrid.org]
-
No problems so far and the dates on the file shows that the patch is applied correctly as well :)
-
After that I applied the patch, I believe a week ago, I didnt had a single BSOD on windows 8... Running very well!

That answer was already supplied to bradleybro28 in the other thread.
Please stop trying to rack up posts. It doesn't get you any brownie points. :)

Hi guys,
we are still trying to come up with some fix for the frequent Win8 crash inside aswnet.sys.
Just wanted to report that this patch has fixed my issue, no more BSOD. It used to do it a couple times a day. Thanks!
-
The patch fixed the bsods on one of my laptops however on my retina mbp with newest windows 8 pro x64 (bootcamp) the crashes still persist.

Did a fresh in install of Windows 8 Pro 64bit today and had the crash occur several times after installing Media Center. Prior to running this install the latest Windows patches installed. Avast! was this first program installed after setting up Windows. Between Avast! and Window patches install several other applications were installed with no issues. How when I attempt to setup Media Center or install another programs (Example: Classic Shell) Windows BSOD. Just install the patch and will see what happens.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro. Media Center and Classic Shell on a Dell Inspiron 64 bit Lasptop.
No problems, no crashes, no BSOD and no patch
The patch should only be applied if you're having a problem.

Hi all,
Installed Windows 8 as an upgrade to Windows 7 last week, and encountered a number of BSOD this week, as described here. I'm running Avast Pro 7.04.1474. This thread hasn't been updated since December, so I'm guessing that the patch is still the way to go, and that no other updates exist? I did see talk of an update rather than patch a few pages back.
-
It's the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD for me too. I thought I had a driver problem at first but after examining the dump file I found it was Avast free. Uninstalling it stopped the frequent crashing. I'll start using Avast again when the issue is sorted out.

Uninstalling your security altogether puts your computer at a huge risk.

1474 still aswnet.sys crashing :(
-
With Network Shield off Windows not crashing. Anyway this problem must be fixed! :-\

I just finished a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro 64bit (not an upgrade). Installed Avast Internet Security and several applications (Steam, Origin, FileZilla, PuTTY, Chrome) and the latest Geforce NVidia release drivers.
Everything worked great, no BSODS.
Next I tried to install the Geforce Experience Beta from NVidia (suggested during the Geforce video driver install) and it BSOD'd during the install. It indicated aswnet.sys in the error.
I rebooted, tried the install again and it succeeded. After which, I tried running the application and it produced the same BSOD.
I understand this application is beta, so not here complaining, just want to share a scenario that produces the BSOD.

Hi People. I had all above mentioned problems and found a silution that worked for me. I hope this will solve your aswnet.sys and BSOD problems too. I am currently running on Windows 8 pro with no problems:
1. First download the newest Avast 8 edition available. That solved the aswnet.sys error.
2. Upon instalation do NOT restart your pc when instalation is finished.
3. Open the avast User Interface and go to the top security tab.
4. Now select Behaviour Shield on your left hand side.
5. Inside the Behaviour Shield page click on settings.
6. In the next window click on Trusted Files on the left hand side.
7. In the next window click on Browse.
8. Now in the Browse menu go to: Computer> Local Disk C:> Windows and highlight the.
Explorer.exe file. Now click open.
9. Click Browse on the second open line.
10. The program will open the Browse menu at the Windows folder. Now search for the ImmersiveControlPanel folder inside the windows folder and open.
11. Highlight the Control/Computer Settings.exe (unshure of precise filename but it's the only .exe file inside the folder) file and click open.
12. Now when both files is listed click OK and close all avast windows.
13. Now restart your PC and continue as normal.
This is the solution that worked on my computer with win 8 pro with avast 8 home edition aswell as Avast Internet Security. I have no problems and no patches needed with a perfect running avast.
I hope this help
Best Regards

This seems to be some awful rigmarol just to get a program to actually work.
Thankfully i eventually got avast working smoothly but i must say i have never come across a program with so many reports of BSODS etc .
Hopefully v9 will not be a repeat of the v8 bsod horror stories.
