Should not have to re-install to fix this! I loved Avast up until this. I'm on satellite internet and now I have to waste my limited allowance to re-install. Thanks a lot Avast!

Didn't use the earlier solution (because I didn't see it) but my system is working.  I did a quick scan then rebooted and then noticed that it was working.  Not really sure exactly what resolved it.

Nice job.....kind of a mini uninstall/re-install without all the work.

I'm sure this will help others.

Thx.

Same thing happened to me just now. Not just the Web Shield is OFF. Everything is off i mean everything avast main screen says this "UNSECURED". Your system is not protected. Please use the Fix Now button to start protecting your system. I then clicked on Fix Now no response. I then tried to individually turn on each real time shields. No help!

This is some sort of bug. My Avast free edition is 7.0.1474

WebShield was disabled when I powered up my Win7 laptop this morning.  Clicking on the "Fix" button in the AvastUI did nothing.  I next tried the repair thru Win7's "Uninstall a program" twice, rebooting after each attempt to no avail.  I then shut the laptop down.  My WinXP desktop didn't have the problem.  I downloaded AshClear.exe and the AIS install with the intent to do a clean install on the Win7 laptop.  However, on powerup, Avast WebShield was again working.  I'll accept the small miracle.

Now, if WebRep will start working in Firefox 16.0.2 on Limited User Accounts on both machines I'll be happy.  WebRep works on the Admin accounts on both machines now.  WebRep worked for me until v7.0.1473 (it's just the last 2 updates that has the problem for me.

Ooooooopps...........just had another PC come up with the Web Shield OFF.....fix button did not work nor enable.

Instead of unistalling and re-installing Avast I did as suggested above.
Here are steps..........
1) Go Into Your Program Files Installations in Control Panel on Windows.
2) Click on Avast for UNINSTALL and it gives you options to Repair, etc....select CHANGE.
3) Deselect Web Shield (Reboot)
4) Once Rebooted you'll see no issue but Web Shield is not active.
5) Go Back into Program Files Installations in Control Panel on Windows and again Avast>CHANGE.
6) Re-Click on Web Shield (Reboot)
7) PC Boots all should be OK.

this is an unpleasant issue :( We haven't reproduced it in our environment yet (and haven't met it during build testing unfortunately).

Could anybody send me your "setup.log" (or Support package) ? Not after un/re-install situation but from the time when the "webshield isn't working (or log even after "remove" /add webshield would be helpful).

thank you
Lukas

It happened to my new Dell too.  Started off on 7.0.1473 last Sunday and only noticed there was an x today.  Upgraded to .1474 but didn't help.  The change feature of removing and re adding web shield worked.

Bummer too as the unit isn't even a week old and except for HP printer driver, nothing's been installed except Avast and windows updates.

"thekochs" (above) worked, thanks.

This happened on the Win 7 machine, no trouble on the Vista machine, 32 bit build.

Anything else I tried, failed. This fix seems solid. And much easier then the other things I attempted, and learned from, in the process. Although, I cut my eye teeth on getting myself in trouble back in the day, just so I had something to fix. (learned to type on a Vic 20 punching code, that's why there are so many edits to this post ;), they all looked good at the time.)

Avast!, I recommend your product for many reasons to others, this is a major screw up. This piece of an update has serious issues and I am very much surprised that such a thing was ever released.

I now know the F8 key won't work on this machine and how to get into safe mode (and out) of 7.

Win some, loose some, hey? Tech boys going to make money off this screw up, I do think.

thekochs fix didn't work for me at first, I tried it again and it did. The thing that worries me though is that it was working just fine after The update, it wasn't until just now it decided to pull this, which leads me to believe it could happen again if the issue isn't found and fixed soon.

Sounds like behavior I was seeing after the uninstall/reinstall stuff that didn't really work. I would work, then would partial work, the fully wouldn't work and...well I didn't want to track ti any further to see if there was a pateran...this has not failed yet and I did it for a while. However, keep us informed, please.

Right, it did not, use "thekochs" method.

I am guessing more then a couple of these other problem posts are dealing with what I saw happen in the process of trying other things, as well as just noticing the "problem" in various stages for the first time.

Try the above, for now.  Just do it as he says, even if you don't think it is the current issue.

I had the same problem, no web shield.
Also i was in the last 7 days before re-registration, attempting to do the registration just hung the interface.
Removing web shield and putting back didn't fix it.
The only thing that has working is a complete uninstall with aswclear, and a full re-install.

Same problem here. I done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. Within 24 hours the real time sheild was not active. No response from the fix it now button, or by enabling the sheild. Resorted to a complete reinstall of Avast. That fixed it for 36 hours. Turned machine on this morning to find that the real time sheild was once again turned off, and again, no luck at all at turning it back on. This time i will try the method mentioned earlier - the change option in windows control panel. If not, another reinstall will be performed (second within 2 days!).

Problem is, this is not one of my machines, it belongs to someone that is not that good with computers, so i am worried this is going to occur again within a few days. The owner is not going to be too happy to find a problem like this so soon after getting his machine back from me.

Any thoughts or input from an Avast member? Are you guys working on a fix for this seemingly common issue? Do you acknowledge it is a problem?

I've currently got this problem on my laptop, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. I've sent two messages to Avast support, first got flagged as solved (even though I'd had absolutely no response from them) and the second is still open and unresolved 3 hours later, with still no response from support at all.

I've done an uninstall and reinstall, I've run CCCleaner and I don't have Windows Defender running - STILL no web shield activated!!

Are you attempting to find a solution to this Avast??!!!

Interesting. I also have this problem now. This problem started just a few minutes ago after a virus database update (121101-1) and reboot.

I'm using Avast Free 7.0.1466 (old version, I know) with Windows 7 SP1 x64.

I fixed this issue by right clicking avast by the clock, avast shield control- and chose disable until computer is restarted. Then I did a restart and all services relaunched just fine. Another way to fix this is to restart the avast system service under services in control panel.

Another way is the repair installation under control panel programs and features but that should be used as a last resort in my opinion.

I've tried some of the above suggestions but nothing working for 'Internet Security' - I've now installed the FREE version (which is fine) and I'll upgrade back to Internet Security once I've been informed that a fix has been found.

After using all the ideas from here and at avast! Free/Pro/Suite (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0)
I decided to give the stopping/starting the Avast service in the Services listing... and it worked... I even rebooted and it was still on after a reboot... so, keeping fingers crossed, it seems to be good now... and, this is a real mess because I'll bet a majority of the Avast users out their don't even look at the Avast task-bar icon let alone come here to find an answer...

Thanks.

I registered on this forum today because of this issue. I tried the repair install from control panel among a long list of other things that didn't fix the problem. After right clicking the avast! icon > shields control > disable until computer is restarted and doing a simple reboot everything seems to work just fine again. Thank you very much for the tip!

By the way I don't think the issue causing this is isolated to the 1474 update. I was using version 7.0.1473 this morning when I noticed the issue (which may also affect even earlier versions I don't know). I have been using avast! since version 4 and this is the first time I've encountered a persistent issue (I've never had any blue screens, crashes, freezes, major slowdowns, etc). It will take more than this to deter me from the product; avast! is awesome, keep up the great work avast! team - I wish you a bright future  :)

Alright, I have been playing around with this issue today for awhile, and it really is "All over the place" I did the "fix" where you disable all shields until system restart and then rebooted the PC. when the PC came up all the avast! shields worked correctly including web shield. So I restarted the PC again to see if it was a complete fix, when the PC came back up again all of avast! shields were down and the service was not on, so I disabled the shields again and restarted and now works fine for now, would a new setup.log file help out whatsoever?

Updated and, like for some others, web shield wasn't running.

Repair did nothing.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the web shield component seemed to improve matters (it now says it's running) - however no pages are ever actually scanned.

I wonder if this is the old redirect driver problem again - I have aswRdr.sys and aswRdr2.sys both present again.

If so, that is an avast installer bug that has been present for about a year now - and seems never to have been fixed.

We released a fix for the "WebShield OFF" problem in the latest vps update. The problem was caused by a timing issue in one critical section. It might or might not appear therefore some users had fixed it by restart of the avast! or their computer. It should work now (hard to test this kind of problems :().

If you were affected by this problem and the virus definition files (vps) are not updated automatically for you then please invoke the vps update manually[1]. This action (when the new vps is applied) should fix the problem. If it doesn't then "restart" either avast! service or the whole computer, please.

We are sorry for inconvenience.
Lukas.

[1] manual update = click "Update engine and virus definitions" in "avastUI > Maintenance > Update". Or right click avast tray icon and "Update > Engine and virus definitions".

Lukas,
I'm guessing the fix is contained in VPS 121102-1.  It just updated automatically here.

I have 121102-1.

Web shield is now running, but since the program update it has scanned zero pages.

I'm almost sure I have sen this before, and it was related to redirect driver.

Should I have aswRdr.sys and aswRdr2.sys both present?

Same issue here, Avast Web Shield went down (Windows 7, 64 bit) as soon as the last program update 7.0.1474 became available and was detected by Avast (so Web Shield was down even before updating the program and choosing Update didn't fix it).

In my case, I fixed it by restarting the Avast service using Windows 7 "Control Panel" and "Service". I needed to do this twice, once under my "Administrator account", which still didn't solve the issue under a "Limited rights account". I solved the issue under Limited rights account by first logging in under this limited account, and than right clicking the Services option in Control Panel, and choosing "Run as Administrator". Once I restarted the service once again using this "Run as Administrator" under limited account, the Web Shield came back on there too.

Please note you may get a Windows error warning "that the service didn't stop properly". I had forgotten to close the Avast program window before stopping the service. Seems Avast is actually quite robust here when knocking the service from under it's feet, it simply asked first if I wanted to stop the service (I clicked Yes), and than Windows came up with the error warning but showed in the Services panel the Avast service was stopped. When I restarted it, Avast program windows came immediately up again showing Web Shield was now properly on, as all other shields.

Good to hear the Avast team may have tracked down and fixed the urgent issue!

May I ask what triggered that issue at first place? Previous vps update was faulty or something?

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!  My son had this problem this morning before updating to 1474 (which we did later ) but it seems to have resolved itself (fingers crossed).  :)

A bug. We wanted to fix a deadlock. And the fix caused another bug - less dangerous (OS works "only" webshield's down) but affecting more users.

As I said it might appear only sometimes on the same environment. It's a race condition. To make it clear - if you restart your computer many times then once it might work and other time it might not :( I don't expect that anybody of the avast team will provide you more details about the fix ;)

After a full uninstall/reinstall I now only have aswRdr2.sys, and webshield is scanning again.

Why does update installer still bring in a wrong version of the redirect driver on some systems? This was acknowledged as a bug ages ago by avast team I seem to recall (either Lukas or PK I think).
