Title: Stupid questions about acronyms
Post by: pierrotlefou on February 11, 2005, 05:07:16 PM
Hello,

I'm a happy user of avast! 4 Home Edition since December 2003, and... sorry, never had any problem of any kind! Anyway, I'm pretty curious and I would enjoy to learn a little more about the meaning of these acronyms : ash, asw, iAVS, VPS and VPU.

Best regards,
pierrotlefou

Just one of the things I found on Avast's website.

iAVS is fast, small, incremental and fully automated update via Internet. Updates are released at least twice a week.

hi!

Hello,

I'm a happy user of avast! 4 Home Edition since December 2003, and... sorry, never had any problem of any kind! Anyway, I'm pretty curious and I would enjoy to learn a little more about the meaning of these acronyms : ash, asw, iAVS, VPS and VPU.

ash - this is used in filenames - means Alwil Software - Home version
asw - acronym for Alwil SoftWare
iAVS - as said above - incremental AntiVirus update Service over the Internet
VPS - the extension of virus detection database file - very old one used for more than 15 years now - it originally meant Virus Pattern Strings. Of course it contains much more than strings nowadays  ;)
VPU - same as above (VPS) but used for incremental updates (today not only for virus data but also for updates of program itself!

Hope this helps  :D

The network editions (ADNM) use asw instead of ash.
