Last evening I got a red popup saying was not able to complete the update. I tried to do a manual update but that failed. I tried to do a repair twice, got several error messages but can't remember what they said. I had to uninstall from the program list. I re-installed it with no problems but Script Shield didn't start working until this am..
II haven't downloaded any new programs for quite awhile so am wondering why all of a sudden Avast stopped working.
I would appreciate it if someone would reply.
Thank you.

have you tried avast repair?
control panel > ad remove programs > avast > uninstall > repair option....wait to minutes and reboot
any change?

I tried that twice, rebooted but didn't work.

hi,
Offhand, I do not know where your crash minidumps for Avast! are located, but will ask around. These logs will have the errors listed, and once you can find them, you can either attach them here or quote them from your logs. Once we have the exact error messages we can then begin to sort this out.
I know you did try to repair more than once, didn't work for you.

How can I prevent Avast from scanning my password protected archive files?
-
Since you don't give any information about what these password protected archives are (file name, location, etc.), no one can really answer that.
-
I had this happen before and someone on here told me how to fix it but don't remember who that person was now.
-
That is unconnected and will have zero effect on password protected archives not being scanned.
If you provide the requested answers then perhaps we can try and help, without information we can't help.
-
They are all C:user\Beverly's\...\bgbutton.png, gif and ccs files.
Shows error...............password protected.
-
The \...\ bit is also important (we need the full path) as I believe this is related to adobe updates and they password protect their files, there is nothing you or avast can do about this.

You're right Dave, these are Adobe files.
-
they are often located in temp/cache folders...... we (almost evry evangelist here) use CCleaner to clean out the crap ;)
I had this happen before and someone on here told me how to fix it but don't remember who that person was now.
click profile button on forum top > Summary > Show post...on left side..............there you can find your old posts
or use forum search function

I found the post mentioned.. Deleted temp/cache folders ran another quick scan but still showed some files could not be scanned. I'm tired of messing with it.
I'm not about to use CCleaner again since it really messed my computer up the first and only time I used it.

you may try ATF cleaner....no install, just save to desktop and run

ATF will work on Win7 if you right click ATF and select Run as Administrator. BUT, ATF will remove your password cookies just as Ccleaner did unless you clear the checkmark out of cookies.

Should I select .......Windows Temp and Current User Temp? Also, for Firefox and Opera should I select cache?
Selecting only the temp files didn't work.
-
For Main, you can select all EXCEPT Cookies. For Firefox, you can select all EXCEPT Cookies, Saved Form Info and Saved Passwords. I don't have Opera but it should be similar to Firefox.
-
Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
- Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
- It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
- Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
- Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

In main, I selected all, except cookies. Hope this won't mess up my computer. Will do my umpteenth scan now.

Will try that after the quick scan I'm running now.

TFC will also clear the Java and flash files... It does not clear cookies as it is a pointless exercise

I ran TFC, waited until it was finished, rebooted my computer, ran another quick scan and unfortunately nothing changed. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for trying to help fix this mess.

This mess as you call it isn't an issue there is nothing you can do about password protected archives not being scanned. You don't have the password, avast doesn't have the password, only the program has the password, nothing you or avast can do about that.

If Avast can't scan those files why do they even show up?
-
Because it is listing files that can't be scanned and giving the reason why, these files would otherwise have been scanned.
-
Got tired of looking at them so just deleted the log files.
Trying to remember how I found out the way to not show those files.
-
I give up - because there really is insufficient information to continue:
As far as I'm aware there has never been away not to display files that are password protected (such as the adobe files which only recently started protecting them) and can't be scanned.
-
Trying to remember how I found out the way to not show those files.
You have to disable the logging of error messages in the settings of the corresponding scan.

How do I do that?

Sorry, I use the German version, but let's try...
E.g.: Quick Scan -> Details -> Settings -> Report
Uncheck error logging there and click on 'OK'.

I don't see error logging in Report. Infected items is checked, Hard error's, checked, Soft error's, not checked, OK items, not checked, Skipped items, not checked.

Hard error's.
That's what I meant.

Please post a screenshot.
Sorry, but I still don't know how to do that.

1. Did you recheck that the setting was changed..??
2. Did you reboot..??
3. Did you rescan with the new settings to rule out that you view old results..??

Yes, I rechecked the setting was changed.
No, I didn't reboot.
Yes, I did rescan with the new settings.

I rebooted and ran another scan but nothing changed. Each one of these files is associated with flash player download.

Look not long ago in this topic I posted this response:

Now in your first response you acknowledged that there was nothing you or avast can do about it ,so you weren't going to worry about it any more.
Then you promptly edited that post removing the 'you weren't going to worry about it any more.' and asked a further question, is it any wonder no one can keep up with you, when you constantly keep changing track and why I gave up.
It seems like ages ago that we spoke about posting screenshots, yet you still haven't managed to do that (not just in this topic). This is something that is essential as a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. Because the questions we ask requesting more detailed information or screenshots go unanswered.
It is very hard to help when information is lacking, so it has to be a case of help us to help you.

Sorry but don't understand why after 4 pages it's so hard to understand that
those password protected files pose no threat. Simply ignore them.
That shouldn't be that hard to do.

I know they pose no threat but I'm still going to try to remember how I stopped them from showing up on the scan before Avast stopped working. I won't be asking for anyone's help.
-
I finally figured out how to stop the scanning archive files. Disk Cleanup, temporary internet files and temporary files. I just ran a quick scan and the archive files didn't show up.

-midnight for a "screenshot" software try Greenshot http://getgreenshot.org/

It launches when Windows starts and sits in the system tray.

You need to read the instruction to set it up so it does what you want.
(Both images I just posted where made with Greenshot and sent to imgur.com)

Did you wait for the program to totally install ???
It takes a while.
Check program and features and see if it's listed. If it is, uninstall it.
Once that's done, reboot and re-install it and be patient and wait for the install to finish.
If it isn't listed in Programs and Features, the try installing it again.

For you, JetScreenshot (http://jetscreenshot.com/) may be easier to use since the screenshot and the link to post can all be done with one simple function.
Watch the video.
In the settings just select the following and once that's done you simply paste the results in the post to
get the picture posted:

Well, I just captured my desktop. Will work with it later and try to figure out how it works.
I didn't do something right. Don't know how to post the image without the link.
Whoops! How can I delete the Facebook attachment?

I'll never figure out how to use this program.
Anyway, this is a quick scan I ran after deleting the temporary files. No archive files scanned.

Step # 1 You need to register the program or your images will vanish very quickly.
