Title: Avast! WebRep Has Crashed
Post by: sdrwkcab on December 12, 2012, 10:45:46 PM
For the last few weeks I've been having trouble with avast! crashing in Chrome when loading various web pages.  I click the balloon to reload, and it does, only to continue crashing intermittently.

I've searched to find others' posts about this happening, and even tried some of the suggestions posted in reply such as, repairing avast and rebooting, as well as a complete uninstall/reinstall of avast! Internet Security, but not having any success as yet.

Any further advice is appreciated.
~ Thanks in Advance

Intel Core i7-2600 / 16GB ram /  Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) / avast! Internet Security (program ver: 7.0.1474, definitions ver: 121212-0) / Google Chrome (ver: 23.0.1271.91 m)

Open your Avast and then go to the "Additional Protection" and "browser protection" WebRep so some icons will appear in browsers, with it being just you clicking "uninstall" now Open your browser and go to the option chrome extensions
Open the folder files and programs> AVAST Software> Avast> WebRep> Chrome and find the file
AswWebRepChrome.crx drag and drop the file to the chrome extensions tab to pop up a window and click ok to add. ready.
check enabled and activated.

Followed your instructions, and will post here if the problem persists.
Is this a known issue?  If so, do you know if there is a fix in the works?

Thanks for the fast reply.

Same here. I have a constant notification that WebRep has crashed - fix this balloon to reload. I can't click anything to reload. Just wanted to let you know the problem is showing up here, too. Thanks for the suggestion above...

Just my personal experience with Avast free 7.0.1474 on a Windows 7 netbook.
This was a Google Chrome related issue for me. The Avast WebRep crash "balloon" originally started appearing about a week ago when I would attempt to launch a Windows 7 msn.com weather module on my desktop.  (The module was associated to launch Chrome.) When I tried to load other urls directly in Chrome the same Avast WebRep error would pop up.
Attempting repair of Avast in Control Panel did not work and no repair option was available for Chrome in Control Panel. Since Chrome was crashing trying to load all other websites anyway (I would get a "Snap" crash page), I just uninstalled Chrome altogether. I have not had an issue with Avast WebRep error appearing since.

Upon uninstalling Chrome I was asked which default browser I wanted to revert to. I selected Firefox 16.02, a browser I know to work well on my machine. No further issues.  I did not have to uninstall/reinstall/change settings in Avast at any point.
I don't understand the connection between Chrome and the Avast WebRep error, I only know the issue was resolved by taking Chrome out of the picture.

Jefferson Santiagos advice above may work, as well, but I did not find it soon enough to try it.
I did check Avast->Additional Protection->Browser protection->Settings->Plugins, as he mentioned,  and noticed that WebRep protection is still showing as active for my other two browsers, Firefox and IE, both without issue. My weather module is even working again!
There is an option on the Avast Settings menu to disable WebRep. I suppose one could deselect that and the protection would be removed, presumably eliminating the error balloon,  without having to uninstall Chrome. It's worth a try. I prefer to keep it enabled and just associate different browsers with it.

I wasn't using Chrome as my main browser anyway so I don't miss it or the aggravation of a crashing WebRep and websites.

@ jefferson santiago ... Thanks again for the reply.
6th day since applying your suggested fix and (knock wood) the WebRep extension hasn't crashed in Chrome.
Must be something about the automatic integration by Avast program, because installing the Chrome plugin manually gave my back the stability I need in my favorite browser.

Hope that this can be fixed in the next program release, as it seems to be affecting many avast users.

I've been getting that error for a while.
I seem to have fixed it by doing Additional Protection->BrowserProtection-> uninstalling, closing browser, and re-installing the addon.

I couldn't even find the manual file to put into extensions but it looks like its stable now regardless.

I am getting this warning time and again! I tried following your suggestions but I am not able to find the Additional Protection tab at all. I am still very new to Avast!  :-[  Any additional help is appreciated. Thank you!
